Just a note

On days like today (which come too frequently) I hope Americans realize that the NRA and the gun lobby are evil.

If you need a license, registration and training to drive a car, is it too much to ask for the same in regards to owning a gun?

Your leaders have failed you. And the American people have failed themselves.

I hope you have a good civil chat about this issue. Without the usual Democrat and Republican bullsh*t.

We'll return to the housing crash tomorrow.

There were plenty of guns around in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s.

Why didn't the proliferation of guns cause more senseless school shootings then?

Anonymous said...

Go away troll. If others at the school had been armed, this kook would not have been able to do what he did. Have you ever noticed these things never happen where there is a likelyhood of armed people around?

Anonymous said...

If he had a license...would that have prevented him from killing people?

That's like saying we should have drunk drivers get drivers licenses..that way they wouldn't kill people. Wait, they do that already and it doesn't work somehow.

Actually if they allowed concealed carry on campus, some of those kids would have been armed...it would have been their only chance.

Why, I believe that all Americans should have the right to bear arms and slaughter their countrymen. It's the American way, baby!

P.S. I predict that nothing will come of this slaughter...no laws will change and no one, in the end, will give a rat's ass about these horrific deaths.

Blaming this on the NRA or on guns is like blaming 9/11 on box cutters.

I thought you had more sense than that.

Anonymous said...

How would registration have prevented this crime?

Not being combative, but I fail to see how any legislation will prevent criminals from obtaining guns.

I do not own a gun, nor do I intend to own one. That said, I think this point is worthy of consideration.

I you would have been present at this tragedy, and if you for whatever reason did have a gun i your possession, would you have used deadly force to stop this criminal in the middle of the act? Or would you keep the weapon in your pocket and allow additional murders to be committed, patiently waiting for the police to arrive?

Would you be willing to watch your friends be murdered?

Anti-gun individuals (which you may or may not be) always blame the gun.

What gets rewarded gets repeated.

Every time one of these lunatics decides to go out in a blaze of glory, everyone in the vicinity cowers and runs, giving that person their great visceral moment of power. I'm sure it is a hue rush to their twisted minds.

If, on the other hand every time someone tried this, an armed citizen apprehended, wounded or killed them, there would clearly be less opportunity for them to believe that they would have their 15 minutes of mass-murderer fame.

A well-armed populace is very egalitarian. It balances power evenly among people.

What could be more liberal than equality.

Tight gun restrictions on otherwise law-abiding citizens simply ensures that such gunmen know that they are able to run the show in any manner they see fit, and without hindrance, as long as they make sure that there are no police in the vicinity at the moment they act.

How difficult is that?

I will GLADLY stop arguing in favor of citizens owning guns WHEN we have an armed police officer on every block.

How can the argument be made that the government prevents me from owning a means of self defense, but provides no alternate means of protection?

Either provide me with a community bodyguard, or allow me to be my own.

Instead, the opinion is that is should allow myself to be killed, and when the police show up, the begin the process of ensuring that the killer gets a fair trial.

In the meantime, the innocent citizen has already been executed.

Keith, yours is the first page I peruse each day, and I never take issue with your sometiimes off the topic political commentary. Till now...

Is now really the time to drop your two-bits of politic spin, when students and faculty are still holed up in dorms and offices fearing for their safety. Did you really have to invite this debate today, before loved ones even know the whereabouts of their friends and family? Was it really necessary to invite the NRA-ists and pacifists to lock horns on this RIGHT NOW, instead of swallowing your microphone for a crummy 24 hours?

You've already got three worthless comments in response to this - no doubt hundreds more could come. And, thanks to your catalyst, its likely that not one moment of thought will be left to consider the tragedy while the banter about guns rights heats up.

Shame on all of us if thats what this forum has become.

NRA are simply crazy - if you want to see how a group of people can live together without packing a gun just come up to Canada. The only time I see a gun is on a cop - if somebody should be shot - it should be buy a person that's had enough training to know where the bullet is going.

If you live in a city and own a gun, do the world a favour and point it at your head while your cleaning it - at least something will be cleaned up.

"Go away troll. If others at the school..."

Pay attention. You agree with me. I'm saying guns aren't the problem. There is something wrong with our society and our children. Think about the 1940s. Not only were we at war, but unlike today, the media were whole-heartedly behind it - openly portraying soldiers as heroes and encouraging kids to play with army men. And yet I don't recall a school shooting like this until the University of Texas in 1966. The kids in the 40's clearly had access to guns.
Personally, I believe this is a result of the steady erosion of moral values - and one of the dangers of discouraging religion. In atheism, arguably, there is no right or wrong. If an atheist believes there is - I'd like him or her to show me the moral treatise upon which that statement is based. Hopefully, the atheist bible isn't some old John Lennon album.

When the gub'ment goes corrupt and declares marshall law on us all, you'll be begging to come over to my house and use my double-barrel shotgun to take out the Apache helicopters flying overhead in order to defend your family and property.

And it's my God-given right to bare arms, so don't you Demicrats try to squelch this!

If it's good enough for Charlton Heston's "cold, dead hands" then it's good 'nuff fer me!

These people could have been killed by someone driving a cement truck into a crowd, and no one would be screaming that we need "cement truck control".

Keith frequently outs himself as a left-leaning poof-ball.

It's tragic these people were killed at Virginia Tech. It doesn't help anyone, though, to use this as an occasion to say, "See, this is why we need stiffer gun control."

Maybe if some of the students had been packing, the gunman would have been killed before he did much harm.

I have to somewhat agree with the other posters.

I am a Canadian (now living in the USA) and we have copious laws and legislation in place regarding the control of weapons. Certifications and training are required for anyone wishing to purchase a firearm.

Yet this did not stop Mark Lepine from walking into a university in Montreal and killing 15 unarmed individuals in cold blood. (An event a previous Canadian poster on this thread has obviously forgotten)

And plesae note, I am not a member of the NRA. In fact, I would go so far as to agree with the statements regarding licensing of weapons. But the primary purpose of registration and licensing is ensure repeat criminals do not gain access to weapons. Those types of laws will do nothing to prevent one crazy individual from going on a rampage.

The better questions to ask are: what was wrong with this person in the first place and how can we go about identifying these types of mental problems in individuals early?

The point is, there are no limits on the types of laws that could be passed to mitigate these types of instances or various offenses for that matter. Curfews would limit property crime. Banning all weapons would limit violent crimes. But at what cost? And would the world we live in closely resemble that of a George Orwell novel?

Just my two cents.

Absolutely right. Try this on an Army post where there are a bunch of dudes walking around with loaded M-16s.

And let's take places such as military installations as examples. You have armed people everywhere, but they are all trained in how to use the firearms, and for the most part, they all follow strict sets of rules, and are quite disciplined people.

I would rather walk the streets at night in some of the western towns where everyone is packin', than in some of these milk-toast places where everyone is scared of guns.

OR NORWAY. I felt very, very safe in Norway, everywhere I went, especially the rural areas where EVERYONE has guns in their homes.

Every male 18-35 has a gun in the house in Switzerland. It's not gun ownership that's the problem. The US is a violent society. It it wasn't guns it would be baseball bats or knives or tire irons that would be used to kill people.

As for the UK and Canada there have been plenty of mass killings there as well. In UK that guy killed 15 kids at a school in the 90s and in Canada there was a university mass shooting in Montreal that if I recall, ended with 5 deaths in the 80s as well as the Quebec National Assembly where 3 politicians were killed also back in the 80s.

It happens less often, but it does happen even with essentially a comlete ban on guns in both countries.

America has a wide streak of violence, racism and greed that's the greatest ever documented in human history.
This trait was brought over by the first big waves of Northern European white trash scum who were undesirables in their own societies. The elite British born and bred "Founding Fathers" gave a veneer of legitimacy over this flotsam, solely for economic reasons and thus was a violent expansionary land grab under way.

WTS, (White Trasg Syndrome), has gradually infected Americans of all races, genders and ethnicities, as the unofficial but popular American way of life. As a result you have gun worshippers,Wal-Mart shoppers,
Hummer drivers,Nascar fans, wife abusers, country music ,Faux News watchers, violent child molesters, religious Christina wackos,Olive Garden diners, pornography, rabid drug consumers, realtors/mortgage brokers and finally sitting on top of it all, their President, George Bush.
Is this a great country or what?

Actually, you were right, but in recent years, gun violence has gone up substantially in Britain, and there has been talk of actually arming the famously-unarmed Bobbies.

I think that you could agree that Canada and Britain are not necessarily apples to oranges comparisons with the US.

I just read an article about a woman who was abducted, tortured and raped. No gun was involved.

Perhaps if the woman HAD been armed, she might have had a chance against the much larger male who attacked her.

It was, apparently, not possible for her to phone the police, what with being bound and gagged and all.

We are a nation of passive sheep, terrified to defend ourselves. Wait patiently, sooner or later the police will arrive. Hopefully, the innocent victim is still alive and only moderately maimed.

It is immoral to deny someone the ability to defend against unlawful attack.

And the cheap shot about Republicans not already outlawing guns just shows why I feel comfortable dismissing the 8th-grade level of debate so prevalent today. That is the same level of analytic brilliance that has determined that real estate never declines in value.

Veritas Faust said...

Keith,

Here is where we must part ways in our thinking...at least on this one issue.

Sorry to be cliche but guns don't kill people: bullets kill people!

We can no more successfully outlaw guns then we can outlaw street drugs which kill many more people annually AND contribute to an overall state of violence in poorer communities where there is a lot of street level drug activity.

Licensing while a good idea for ensuring competency with a gun, presumes we can keep them out of the hands of criminals. We cannot.

I do not blame video games and violent TV shows as they are just a reflection of market demand. Fear is marketed to us in the form of news-entertainment on all the major networks.

We apparently have a voracious appetite for fear and violence so there is little blame that can be assessed to the NRA or other allied lobbying groups.

Then of course there are the legitimate civilian uses for a firearm such as hunting. I personally enjoy the taste of Venison...if you prepare it correctly. If not, frankly it tastes like nasty shoe leather, but I digress. Shooting an animal and eating it is morally equal to buying cut meat at the local mega mart.

And if I want to shoot a high powered rifle (Hunting, "assault" or full auto), handgun with a high capacity magazine or a shotgun it is my right so long as I do not do so in the commission of a crime.

The gun deaths in those countries by the way are almost all committed by criminals since they are the only people outside of law enforcement and military that have ready access to firearms.

Anonymous said...

If we were a society that had as few guns to START with as those other nations, then I would find it quite acceptable to limit gun ownership in some fashion, or altogether.

But the problem in the US is that the toothpaste is already out of the tube, and the guns are out there.

I propose this solution:

We first spend all our efforts on taking guns away from criminals.

When gun crime is practically nonexistent, we can then go after the guns of the law-abiding citizens who desire protection.

Additionally, citing statistics in a vacuum, without any other context is an argument unworthy of anyone bright enough to recognize the housing bubble. I'm going to poke a little fun here and suggest that we leave such vaporous arguments to those who are persuaded by books extolling the everlasting housing boom. This is not a jab, I mean this sincerely.

Is correlation causation? That is a tenuous point from which to start such an argument.

And the attempt to poison the well

by suggesting that gun proponents are non-reality oriented idealogues is, again, beneath us as logical people.

Incidentally, my empirical evidence suggests that for many individuals, the opposition to guns is, in many ways, just as "religious" as the argument for guns.

Yes, they have automatic rifles in their homes but those clips with ammo are sealed and breaking that seal will not be tolerated lightly by their Army. That is totally different than having a Glock in some shoe box.

My heart goes out to those who were at the Va Tech School today and those who were wounded and killed and their families.

In Florida if someone gets into your car or comes in your home in a threatening manner you are legal if you shoot them first and ask questions later.
At the airport in Miami the Tour Operators pass fliers out to the tourists that say, "Do not anger the local population un-necessarily as they are armed and may use their guns legally".

I reckon that goes for classrooms here too.

It is sad how gun-ignorant people are. Glocks are low powered handguns. So-called assault weapons are mid powered weapons. Hunting rifles tend to be high powered weapons.

That campus was a gun-free zone. So, the victims were helpless. Criminals love unarmed victims. Those people died because they couldn't fight back.

Self defense is a human right.

In Switzerland they have full auto assault rifles in their closets. It's a meltdown of civilized society that is occuring. Banning cars would make the most sense if it's about the number of people hurt. Those stats need to include homicide/suicide stats from all causes (Knives, Boots etc) to be credible. Japan has a very high suicide rate and very strict gun control. Can we please blame the perpetrators.

As the planet dumbs down, these incidents become more frequent. When i was in High School, there was no need for a police officer at the school. The worst thing that happened was there was a fight. If a certain teacher was around when the fight broke out, guess who won...and it wasn't a student.

Now there are cops in the high schools. Yep, we are going the right direction. Pathetic.

So we have high school incidents on a regular basis and now we have stepped it up to the college level. Yep, things are definately heading in the right direction. Kinda like when you happen to go to the mall and walking towards you is some fat hog with a small child. All you can think is, what LOSER impregnated that hog and produced offspring?

Well, it's only going to get worse.

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts...
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia:

Hi Yanks,

I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.

(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!)

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in "successfully ridding Australian society of guns."

You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens

Take note Americans, before it's too late!

If you you want gun control, then you should look at other great nations where only the cops have guns:

IRAN
CUBA
NORTH KOREA
and on.

If you want to live in any of those societies than stay there.

Hilter passed sweeping gun control and especially prohibited Jews from owning firearms.

6 MILLION OF THEM ended up in a hole. That scenario, can and will happen again on this earth.

The NRA advocates the 2nd ammendment for self defense and sportshooting purposes. The 2nd ammendment is there to protect the others.

A man without arms, is a peasant, a subject, a sheep for the slaughter... just look at history.

THE CAUSE IS OUR filthy sicko society. This is the result of pop culture, and a loneliness caused by people (cool crowd) ostracizing the dorks. Committing such horrors is made easier for sicko because of movies, music and video games.

Today's kids, especially without a nuclear family, have been raised by SnoopDogg, and videos gams like Ghost Recon, and crap movies like GRINDHOUSE.

It is illegal to murder.
It is a felony for a person under 21 to own a handgun.
It is a crime to bring a gun on school campus for anything other than ROTC drills.
For over TEN YEARS, every a gun can only be purchased after a complete criminal background check.
All felons, illegal aliens, mentally ill, and alcholics are banned from owning guns.

Just like Imus, all in one week, the 1st and ammendment and the 2nd ammendment will take major blows

More Facism, reactionary of course, and less freedom.

I AM SICK OF GIVING UP MY RIGHTS EVERY TIME THERE IS A EVENT IN THIS PATHETIC COUNTRY.

And, all firearms are defacto registered in all 50states.

Go to gunstore and buy one.

You must pass a background check, and you must fill out an ATF form with your info.

The FFL/gun dealer, keeps the registration of this.

In many states....about 6, all handguns are registered. PERIOD.

Laws don't stop crime.

We have a very sick society on our hands, and it is getting worse.

WE need to come together as a community and stop all the hate and oppression.

Anonymous said...

Keith,

You are mis-informed regarding handguns in Canada. They are not "illegal", they are "restricted". A law abiding citizen with the proper registrations and certifications is permitted to own a handgun. And by that I mean Glocks, Colts, etc.

As I indicated earlier, this is not a gun problem, it is a societal problem. The Norway example is an excellent one. And even Canada is a good frame of reference. If gun ownership occurs in these countries in a similar prevalence to that of the USA, what makes the USA different?

Another poster brought up the riots of soccer games and I think that brings up a good point. How many soccer riots and fights have broken out in other countries? Yet what is the frequency of that occurring in North America? When was the last riot at a football game? I've seen baseball brawls before between players which rarely escalates to problems amidst the crowd? So that is another example of a societal issue.

But back to the matter at hand, here is an interesting tid bit pertaining to that shooting that occurred at the Montreal university back in 1989. Did you know that campus police are forbidden from carrying firearms at universities in Canada? So when Mark Lepine started his rampage, the campus police had nothing to fend him off with other than mace and a billy club. So how did gun control laws assist in that circumstance?

Nonetheless, I am not here to start an argument. Just please do not make broad based statements regarding governments failing the people when tragedies like this occur. Because I really think it does you a dis-service and contributes to the likihood of people not taking your statements as seriously.

True, a madman killed the kids, not the guns. But come on, hopefully some good can come of this and we start treating guns with the same seriousness that we treat driving a car. Is that asking too much?”

Sure Kieth, I’m glad you mentioned the automobile:

Want to lower crime?
Want to significant lower the number of deaths in the U.S.?
Want to help the environment?
Want Americans to get into shape?
Want to help curtail the dependency on oil?

Ban the use of personally owned vehicles. Public transportation for everyone. Whats that Keith? Don’t want to give up those keys? Hypocrite.

Come on Keith. Get real here. How many laws where broken during this rampage? Would one more law have stopped it? Two more? Hundreds? What law would you have passed that would have these persons to rethink their actions?

It really is all a moot point for at least 200-300 years as I see it. Ignoring the constitution for a moment...

Even if gun laws make ownership illegal (or more restrictive) we will still have more guns than we could ever want in the streets of the USA. And, guess what?! Nobody will be turning theirs in to the local authorities. The conversation really is pointless because we have guns and they won't be going away anytime soon, regardless of what the laws say.

Anonymous said...

I've never owned a gun, but if they outlaw them, I'm definitely getting one.

My respect for you once again goes down Keith. Stick to housing, it's what you do best.

For onemorebeer: fully automatic weapons are for all intents and purposes banned to the general public since the Firearms owner protection act of 1986. Please educate yourself on this issue.

Obviously gun control works well in America. Look at the cities with the strictest gun control in the country: Washington DC, Detroit, New York.....all crime-free paradises.

And now how to explain that gun crime violence has risen dramatically in London recently despite strict gun control in that country? Must be all the Americans like Keith moving to the country.
(And by the way Keith...I couldn't give a crap what the British press thinks of us...I mean really, who cares?)

Mexico has a ban on guns. Hmmmm... Ever look at a Mexican based newspaper headline? Bullet riddled bodies everywhere. Almost daily. Yeah, ban guns from law abiding citizens because only criminals should be allowed to own them. ~sigh~

Keith, why don't you wait to find out who this shooter was? He might very well have no criminal record and might pass any gun ownership and registration requirement you would write up. The Swiss order every able-bodied man between approximately 18 to somewhere in his 50s (I believe) to keep a fully automatic assault rifle (a real assault rifle, not just a semi-automatic) in his home with a supply of ammunition. Yet they are very peaceful. The violence in the US is due to many factors. The best way to defend against a nut with a gun is to make sure there are lots of people in the area around him with loaded guns. It also seems that the officials of the University did nothing for about 2 hours after the first shooting incident to warn the students about the situation, believing that the first incident was isolated...a very stupid decision on their part. If there were a thousand students with guns on the campass this might have turned out differently, but the administration seems to have made the fatal decision not to close down the University immediately.

I HOPE EVERY RESPONSIBLE LAW ABIDING PERSON IN THE UNITED STATES HAS A GUN.

To do this, we simply need to register, certify and train gun owners and guns. We've lost control of our country's population with millions of illegals pouring over our borders unchecked, and we've lost control of guns and gun owners.

And damn, I wish the campus security, the cops or a trained and registered citizen had been on that campus to blow away that nut today.

I'm sick of gun anarchy folks. I'm sick of a society who doesn't care. I'm sick of a bought-and-paid-for congress doing the bidding of the evil NRA (and NAR). However, if some (all) of those students or faculty were armed, this guy wouldn't have gotten 32 of them. Five or 10 people shooting back would have taken care of this problem quickly.

No, I'm not kidding. Everyone who wants to be armed should be permitted to carry a weapon ... period. This isn't a gun problem. It's a people/criminal problem. Innocent / law-abiding people need weapons AT LEAST as powerful as the criminals.

Despite all the gun defenders rhetoric about it not being the lack of gun controls, the "armed" USA remains one of the worlds most dangerous ( civilised) society as todays events prove.

Can anyone believe that there is no linkage between the number of guns in the USA and the number of disproportionate deaths as shown by the statistics ?

So how many deaths are acceptable for those who advocate "guns" for all. Surely there must be a point at which even the most fanatical NRA supporter realizes something needs to be done about gun control.

What is that point - 10 times the European death rate ( no can't be that coz the USA is already there) is it twenty times ? thirty times ?

Surely at some point the gun toters will accept that the price of unfettered gun ownership is too high. Nah because the bottom line is that the gun advocates really don't give a flying monkeys about the number of "other" people killed just so long as they maintain their cherished rights.

The rest of us pay a price for your "freedoms" and to ignore this point or "talk around it" is both ignorant and selfish.

Those who hold dear the truism that "guns don't kill people" must, by dint of reason agree with the following sentiment (each verse based on actual incidents):

One Less Gun

Children outside in the park,
Playing "let's pretend"
The monkeybar's a castle
A dragon is their friend
They only pulled the trigger
Just to have some fun

It never would have happened if
There was one less gun

Judith kept a cannon
Underneath her seat
In case of an emergency
She might chance to meet
Someone cut her off in rush hour
She completely came undone

It never would have happened if
There was one less gun

First one in the family
To ever graduate
Went out to a nightclub
With friends to celebrate
He was a drive-by victim
He was their only son

And it never would have happened if
There was one less gun

The Brady Bill and gun locks
are a step in the right direction
If you own a gun use a strong box
For your own protection
Because guns are often used
against their owners bye and bye
Maybe you should hand it in
at a buy-back collection.

You're right, Keith. What we need is pacifism. Even in the military. Let's just use harsh language. We just need to talk things over. We just need to understand one another. Europe "understands" better than we do. England "understands". When the armed Iranians approach in Iraqi waters, you stop and try to talk to them with big smiles and open arms. Someone at Virginia Tech should have just tried to give the guy a chocolate bar and a hug. Hey, that might have worked with the Iranians, too!

By the way, no one ever answered my original question: Why didn't rampages happen in the 1940's. There was plenty of ammunition, racism, glorification of the violence of war, religious fervor, and low rate of higher education. Why no famous school rampages in 1946?

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - On a university campus of 2,600 acres, with more than 26,000 students, ironclad security is not a practical goal. Even so, tough questions swiftly surfaced as to how effectively Virginia Tech authorities responded to Monday's horrific massacre.

Why were campus police so sure the threat was contained in one dormitory, when most of the killings occurred two hours later in a classroom building?

Why did they think the assailant might have left the campus after those initial shootings?

Why was there a lag of more than two hours after the first shootings before an alarm was e-mailed campuswide - around the time another, more deadly burst of carnage occurred? And more generally, some security experts wondered, was the school's crisis planning and emergency communications system up to the task?

Clearly, something went terribly wrong.

I agree with the anon about guns prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act. Where were the shootings then? They didn't happen because a lot of folks were armed then. Trying something like that would have been suicide. In today's feminized, fake, multicultural society, a criminal can show up with a gun and get a pretty high body count since he is pretty sure that noone will stop him. That is what we saw in PA. Noone armed to counter the guy and evidently noone with the balls to try and stop him. After all, if he is going to shoot you anyway, you may as well try to kick his arse and disarm him. Not in today's America, though.

You guys can call cops (Dominoes Pizza is faster in some cities than cops)but I will always prefer self reliance.

The world is a dangerous place. America is less dangerous than most places (except places where guns are banned like DC, San Fran, Detroit, etc) but is not the romper room that the international socialists like Clinton or Feinstein want you to believe it is. Wake up and live in reality.

Check out Florida's campaign to teach shooting to women. It help drop the rising rape rate back in the 90s. It worked.

Those lemmings who really think that a gun has a mind of its own just remember that armed citizens are why you are not having your door kicked in. The criminals don't know what is on the other side-unless you live in a major urban area where gun ownership is limited to criminals and police (who show up after the fact and write reports). So stop desiring to wallow in victimhood and pitypartying and stand up for yourselves.

This shooting could have been prevented by simply allowing a professor or two who is not a Marxist on campus (and thereby progun) and allowing him or her to be armed.

Such a tragedy...and preventable.

Oh, and don't forget that the antigunners like Feinstein, Schumer and Rosie O Donnell (had to throw a nonjew in there to try and keep it fair) have armed bodyguards. Amazing that the lemmings who believe in "equality" would follow people like that.

the gun grabbers will most definitely use this as a exuse to take what guns they can from law abiding citizens.....

the second ammentment was put there by our founding fathers, at number 2, to protect number 1.....it was high on the list of importance for a reason, and hunting defenseless critters was not the reason for it....soon, we will have to stand up and be accounted for in one way or another.......i see no alternative. this government is wildly out of control now. its power knows no end......our founding fathers feared government because they knew what it could turn into....instead of being our servant, it has now became our master........and this must be changed.....once it has this power, it will not ever let go of it, until this power is taken from it by force.......of course no one wants to talk about this, because it is painful and disheartening to realize that all we do, all we say, all we think and all we feel, is all controlled and manipulated...we must all relearn the things we have forgotten, hidden deep within ourselves......liberty ladies and gentlemen......liberty......sweet liberty.......it is the pearl of great price...........in my opinion it is.......is it worth fighting for? in my opinion .......yes.........i love it so......i love it.......even though i have never had it.......i want it so.......i dream of it......i can taste it.....many of our founding fathers tasted it.......they wanted it .........they wanted it for us......we can have it.......but for anything worth having......the costs will be great......we have to ask ourselves.....is it beyond our capabilities to think on these things and to act on these things in this year of our Lord, 2007........this is a question that i cannot answer......yet......

"Kind of like capital punishment and global warming too"

First off, please do not make broad based statements pertaining to our viewpoints on Global Warming simply because President Shit for Brains doesn't believe in it. He doesn't believe in evolution either. But I don't think that is an adequate frame of reference for our country as a whole.

Regarding capital punishment, I had forgotten that Europe was so enlightened on the issue. Remind me to grab my "execution is murder" sign and parade myself like a jackass in front of the prisons housing serial killers like the BTK guy. Obviously those people can be rehabilitated.

Oh, how I love the bleeding hearts when it pertains to the "individual rights" of violent criminals. Clearly the best philosophy is to ensure those most likely to kill be coddled in air conditioned cells. It wasn't their fault afterall. Their father was abusive. Their mother didn't hold them enough. They were upset when Friends went off the air. Blah blah blah.

Tell you what Keith. How about we take the BTK guy off of death row and place him in your protective custody. I am sure you highly evolved European culture will transform him into an upstanding member of your society. You can laugh and tell jokes over high tea. He will regale you of his tales of kidnapping, torture and murder. You can tell him about all those poor FBs who were "misguided" into home purchasing by the "evil lenders". What wonderful frivolity!

I just hope your efforts at rehabilitation work well on good old Mr. BTK. Because if things go sour, remember: there won't be a gun nearby to defend yourself.

Maybe you can throw your steaming hot Earl Grey tea and crumpits at the would-be assailant. I am sure that will fend him off.

onemorebeer said . . ."I can understand hunting rifles but powerful handguns like Glock and full-automatic rifles should be banned."

Have you ever shot a Glock? The .9mm Glock is a little bit better than a pea shooter (.22), it is not a "powerful" handgun. If you want a "powerful" handgun, shoot a .45 or a .357 magnum. A Glock is good for putting a lot of rounds downrange quickly, but realistically you need about 3 good rounds in the chest to take the bad-guy out with a Glock, 1 round from a .45 will stop him in his tracks. . . now that's some stopping power.

Part of the problem with the anti-gun crowd, is they never take the time to actually know the facts about the weapons they are against.

The quoting of statistics to prove one's point on either side in the gun-control theatre is pointless and a waste of time.

By quoting all the statistics, we judge gun-ownership on it's utilitarianism (i.e. the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one). Even if the stats. said it is more dangerous to have guns than not . . . The need of the one who might have been saved had he had the opportunity to choose to own a gun is now swallowed up in the needs of the many.

What it all of it really boils down to is that we (as a nation) have become reluctant to defend ourselves. We are told if we are robbed give them what they want and they will go away. This is regardless of the fact that the robber just violated my person. We are told nothing is worth a human life.

We are told when confronted with a crime to let the cops do their job. Excuse me, we pay the cops what 50k a year to defend my life. Why should he be willing to defend my life when I'm not willing to defend it myself.

The police will rarely be there when it happens. Cops do a really good job of catching the criminal AFTER the act has happened. WHILE the crime is being committed it is OUR responsibility to stop it.

As far as registration, what good will it do . . . the smart criminal buys it from the black market with no registration, and unlike the car thief the gun thief isn't going to brandish his stolen goods around until it's too late.

As far as training, I wish the local governments offered FREE gun training to all it's law-abiding citizens.

All this crap about just using hunting weapons is just that crap.
Hunting is a secondary use for a gun. The primary use being personal self-defense and protection (from robber/government etc).

Again, we have become a nation of cowards unwilling to take personal responsibility for our own safety believing it is the "professional's" job, believing that nothing (material) is worth our lives.

"Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?" ~Patrick Henry

I'm pretty much a liberal (NOT pro-Hillary) - I'm pro animals and pro environment and pro little people (kids) and pro a bunch of things and I own several guns and know how to use them, too.

I don't live in fear - I grew up on a ranch in colorado where people just have guns. I've never been in a western town where everyone packs heat, that's a myth from Hollywood. I don't carry a gun, they're locked away in my house, unloaded. They're registered and legal. I don't hunt, I actually hate violence of any kind except with the following exception:

Everyone with a TV should go buy a gun and take the bastard (TV) out and shoot it right through the tube. It makes you feel REAL good.

If someone there legally had a handgun or rifle maybe they could have stopped the maniac with a shot to the head instead of letting him kill 22 innocent people and wound many others. Guns don't murder, people do. The bible says do not murder, but sometimes you have to kill especially the rapists, child molestors and murderers in order to rid society of their danger.

Every adult male in Switzerland is required to have a gun in his home. Switzerland is also one of the safest countries in the world.

As long as weapons exist, criminals will find a way to get possession of, and distribute them to their fellow criminals.

If this maniac did not get hold of a gun, he would have found another way to slaughter people. Timothy McVeigh did not use a gun. The crazy woman who set her office building on fire did not use a gun.

Keith,

Guns are not evil. Just look at who the first responders were, and what did they have in their hands? That's right, guns, and even military weaponry.

I agree with you that everyone should have firearms training. In fact we should require minimum 2 years military service for everyone.

The second amendment says they have every right to regulate the Militia, but they cannot deny the right of the people to bear arms. So regulate the Militia! According to 10USC311 the militia is one part organized National Guard, and one part unorganized militia which consists of all able bodied males between the ages of 17 - 45. [CITE: 10USC311]

Make everyone get military training for 2 years and learn to use the weapons properly. They might get a new found sense of honor and respect too.

Thank god the founders had the foresight to make it a right to bear arms, and not just a priviledge.

At this point I don't know why so many people are coming down on the campus police/swat/regular police/etc. I don't think it is a logical jump to go from "this guy just killed two people in the dorm" to "this guy is planning to mow down 30 other students across campus".

Clearly, you start trying to find the guy right away. However, you don't shut down the campus and city because 2 people got killed. If that were the case then there'd be a whole lot of nothing happening all around the World all of the time.

Does anybody else find it flat out crazy that this guy was able to kill 32 people with 2 hand guns. That says to me that he was a crazy-good shot or everybody froze like deer in the headlights. He had to reload several times. He must have. Yet nobody made a move. I'm not saying there is right or wrong in how the people on the other side of the gun reacted. I just find it fascinating.

Aside from all of the details and gun comments, I want to say that this kind of event is just sick. People are f'd up.

You can kill more people by driving down a crowded sidewalk with a car, or burning down a crowded building.

If everyone were FORCED to carry a firearm, the people most likely to use them would be quickly removed from society. Every time he drew that gun there would be a 50% chance he'd get killed. That sort of attrition gets rid of the gun proned rather quickly.

Every one of these mass murders was enabled by LACK of guns for self defense. That's a certainty. Where guns exist on both sides (gang war) only one or two people get killed in a battle. All the anti-gun wimps can offer is, "we think there would be less murder if guns were controlled".

Plus, if everyone were armed, we'd be a lot more polite to each other. That's just an added bonus.

Why do you want us to stay away from the democrat/republican thing? It's your republicans who won't do anything to control gun access. It's your republicans who urge us to look at each with nothing but scorn and envy, to see others as mere objects to compete with and get ahead of. When liberals talk of respecting and loving each other it's met with eye-rolling and guffaws. In fact, the whole conservative republican ideology is basded on nurturing the worst instincts in humans of greed, selfishness and fear. Seeing people as objects only makes it easier to destroy them.

You may not want to admit to being a republican because it's just not cool to be one, but your positions often align with theirs. Your admonition to comment "Without the usual Democrat and Republican bullsh*t" is telling. You knew where this would go and you know who's mindset led us here. Conservatism's.

What PO'S me off the most when things like this happens is, the MSM takes these opportunities to wash all our brains.

With the current chickification of the news, most of what is talked about is how the survivors are going to deal with their feelings and emotions, and how everyone involved is going to need counseling. 55 minutes of coddling and 5 minutes of details, in a one hour program. The media is turning us all into feminist wussies.

The only feeling real men should have to deal with is anger, in this situation. And if anyone else was involved in this senseless slaughter, they should be hunted down and brought to justice.

I'm sick and tired of the MSM playing up the emotional aspects of these tragedies, and turning them into purely HUMAN INTEREST STORIES.

I know why they do it. Because human interest stories have no direct affect on the viewers. The human interest side of the story distracts the viewer from the critical thinking part, and distracts you with your own emotions, so you cannot make a rational judgment on the matter.

Stupid sheeple.

"You right wing nuts are dense, gun control doesn't mean take guns away from everyone"

What a poignant opinion, are you in favor of firearms being taken away from all those that the gov't. doesn't approve of?

Perhaps only Law Enforcement and the Military should be allowed, like Nazi Germany (where gun control was first enacted).

Funny how a policy or a sign "Gun Free Zone" is not obeyed by the bad guys.

I guess our shooter didn't think very highly of the law, or school policy. Students did however, and their noble obedience to it made a gunman's life much easier. You never hear of mass shootings at gun stores, or police stations. Funny, that...

The gun free zone just played into the criminals plans. Nobody could defend themself, just what that spineless creep wanted.

Too bad the powers that be put all the students at risk.

Please let everyone defend themselves. The criminals will not attack if they know their victims might fight back. The police can not be everywhere to protect us, we need to protect ourselves. Criminals are afraid of citizens who can protect themselves. Criminals are emboldened when they think they have the upper hand. Innocent people are hurt by our knee-jerk laws.

Comments suggesting there would be a blood bath after the implementation of liberalized concealed carry policies on college grounds are no different than the fears expressed by many leading up to the liberalization of state concealed carry laws nation-wide. No such blood bath materialized. Increasing access to firearms for law abiding gun owners simply does not increase gun crime. Perhaps, tho, it could have prevented some today.

Over 128,000 Virginians have conceal carry permits and they are all law abiding citizens, too bad at least one of those weren't in the immediate area when this debacle started.

Private Investigator and Terrorism Expert Bill Warner says the shooting is professional, appears to be the result of military training:

"THIS IS MILITARY TYPE SHOOTING, NO NAME YET, BUT 62 PEOPLE SHOT AND 32 DEAD AND SOME ON THE WAY OUT (30 IN HOSPITALS), THIS HAS TO BE HIGH POWERED AMMO (HIGH KILL RATE) FROM WHAT WOULD BE TWO 9MM HANDGUNS WITH AT LEAST A 15 ROUND CLIP (POLICE CLIPS ARE 15) AND BACK UP AMMO CLIPS."

"IF 62 STUDENTS ARE SHOT AT AND ARE HIT AND 32 OF THEM ARE DEAD AND OTHERS ARE CRITICAL, THIS GUY HAD MILITARY TRAINING. NO ONE CAN DO THIS KIND OF HANDGUN SHOOTING WITH SUCH DEADLY EFFECT WITHOUT A LOT OF TRAINING, THESE PEOPLE WERE MOVING TARGETS, NOT STATIONARY PAPER TARGETS."

"I SHOOT A LOT WITH HANDGUNS, 9MM SEMI AND .38 REVOLVER, NO WAY TO DO THIS MUCH DAMAGE, ON THE RUN, WITHOUT BEING A COLD HANDED MARKSMAN."

FWIW, Chinese citizens are not allowed access to weapons so obviously he was more than just a "student".

Moreover, the serial numbers were filed off the guns used, so much for the knee-jerk reaction of the namby-pambies...

I think its WAY past time America wakes-up and decides whether it wants to:

A. Permanently abandon the common-law sovereign citizen status embodied in the Declaration of Independence and embrace totalitarian hegemone rule of the Global Banking Elite.

B. Begin to disassemble the two-party insanity and the sycophant police state that is turning us into slaves (38% of GDP now goes to funding ALL US gov't.)

NRA Gave $3.3 Million in PAC Support During The Past Decade To Representatives Who Voted To Repeal Assault Weapons Ban

Members of the House of Representatives who voted to repeal the ban on assault weapons received twenty-one times more, on average, in political action committee (PAC) contributions and independent expenditures from the National Rifle Association (NRA) during the past decade than those Members who voted to maintain the ban, according to a Common Cause study that includes a Member-by-Member breakdown of NRA PAC support received during the period.
The House voted 239 to 173 to repeal the assault weapons ban on March 22.

The Common Cause study found:

Overall, the NRA contributed $3,359,413 in PAC support to the 239 Representatives who voted to repeal the ban during the past decade. The 173 Members voting against the repeal of the assault weapons ban received a total $114,061 in NRA support.

House Members voting to repeal the assault weapons ban received, on average, $14,056 each in NRA PAC support during the past decade. House Members voting against the repeal received, on average, $659 each.

Also, don't cars kill more people in the US every year than guns. In New Jersey, an anti gun state, I heard of a man who killed his wife with a base ball bat. Maybe we should outlaw bats.
