Sarah Palin will go down as the biggest, most desperate and most reckless political Hail Mary of all time

It's truly sad to see McCain put politics and his own career over America.

It's come out now that McCain made a rushed, desperate choice with Palin. Do something dramatic or lose for sure, he was told. Well, he'll lose for sure still. Even when she drops out and is replaced by Hutchinson, Romney or Pawlenty.

John McCain has been exposed as a reckless, dangerous, hot-headed fool. He is an unacceptable candidate for President.

Come on GOP. Give us someone else. Throw this nut overboard. Palin will take care of herself. But the rot in your party is at the top. Just like it was these past eight years.

(Bonus - check out Palin's seat of power, where she got all that great experience being touted by McCain and his GOP fools.)

Palin disclosures raise questions about vetting - Alaskans say no one from McCain camp asked them about eventual VP pick

Perhaps more important, several Republicans said, Mr. McCain was getting advice that if he did not do something to shake up the race, his campaign would be stuck on a potentially losing trajectory.

With time running out — and as Mr. McCain discarded two safer choices, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, as too predictable — he turned to Ms. Palin. He had his first face-to-face interview with her on Thursday and offered her the job moments later.

They didn’t seriously consider her until four or five days from the time she was picked, before she was asked, maybe the Thursday or Friday before,” said a Republican close to the campaign. “This was really kind of rushed at the end, because John didn’t get what he wanted. He wanted to do Joe or Ridge.”

It's too bad you're not here in the US to listen to all of the right wing radio. It's hilarious stuff!!

These (fake) conservatives are so deluded that they are absolutely ecstatic about Palin. She made $10 million for the campaign over the weekend. The conservatives are frothing at the mouth over this woman so maybe it will work out after all.

Do we forget that America elected this man?

Dubya's Greatest Hits

NEVER underestimate the stupidity of the American public, Keith.

It kinda bites that this blog has beomce a left wing propaganda site, with comment quality in freefall.

Yeah, starting to think I'm not going to miss this place so much.

Let's make sure I got this right?

George Bush. Cocaine? Check. DUI? Check. No Problem, we bless you as president.

Barack Obama. Abuse drugs and alcohol, including cocaine? Of course, he even makes money off of it by selling a book. Running for president? No problem.

Sarah Palin's husband had a DUI 22 years ago? No! Never! Will never hear of it! Totally unacceptable! (Really, it's because she is a woman, but we keep that swept under the rug and just talk about her husband's 22 year-old DUI to divert attention.)

You effing sexist pigs.

Not exactly the slant the McCain campaign wanted on this story--despite his "maverick" image...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26501863

I like this section, especially:

A rushed pick?
Up until midweek last week, some 48 to 72 hours before Mr. McCain introduced Ms. Palin at a Friday rally in Dayton, Ohio, Mr. McCain was still holding out the hope that he could name as his running mate a good friend, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, a Republican close to the campaign said. Mr. McCain had also been interested in another favorite, former Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania.

But both men favor abortion rights, anathema to the Christian conservatives who make up a crucial base of the Republican Party. As word leaked out that Mr. McCain was seriously considering the men, the campaign was bombarded by outrage from influential conservatives who predicted an explosive floor fight at the convention and vowed rejection of Mr. Ridge or Mr. Lieberman by the delegates.

I don't understand. Where are the adults in the Republican party?

Does nobody care about the country?

Does nobody care to choose the truth, over lies?

Watching the GOP spinmeisters is like watching Lereah and Yun. There's no way they can believe the bullsh*t they're spewing. No way.

If Obama had chosen someone of equal stature, they're be all over it. But since it's their guy, nothing but support.

It's sickening, and it shows you why identifying with either party is for fools, and for fools only.

The only two conservative commentators I've seen willing to stand up on this one are Andrew Sullivan and Charles Krauthammer

They rightly threw Harriet Miers over the side. They should do the same with Palin. We'll see..

Gee, with his VP pick this exciting, can't wait to hear who his Sec of Defense and National Security Advisor picks will be!

Perhaps Britney Spears and Paris Hilton?

Would it surprise you to find out that GOP operatives are pushing the preggers daughter or drunk husband stories, to try to deflect away from the true issue:

She is woefully unprepared to be President of the United States.

Deep down, I hope she lasts until her first press conference. That'll be a hoot. And oh, if there's a santa claus, she'll make it all the way to the veep debate before pulling out.

That's a 2-bucket of popcorn day.

I was wondering if this is actually the PLAN from the beginning--if he now throws her under a bus and picks Romney, everyone may suddenly be RELIEVED!

But then again, no, the Republidiots have decided enmasse that they need to LOVE this pick, so she'll stay.

Just wait until the twice-elected, Worst EVER bumbling stumbling stutterer-in-chief speaks at the GOP Convention. What a bad joke. Hopefully no one will ask him what 'sovereign' means again. Maybe Palin could enlighten 43?

Following Bushco "speech" GOP credibility will be reduced
to 0 or less.

Only thing worse would be Cheneyburton giving a speech on GOP ethics. Then credibility would be in negative numbers and overall Bushco approval ratings to single digits.

Give up Grandpa Munster McCain.

Go be a Senator from somewhere again and tell everyone down at the bar what a hero you are.

Try not to lose your temper and show us your rage problems or beat your wife until after the election.

GOP is doomed. Watch McCain turn to wax on TV this week. He can always blame the Ambien...

All this speculation about Palin's qualifications is still missing the point:

McCain is extremely self-conscious about his short stature.

Palin was chosen to make him appear taller in the photo ops.

"Carville nails her"

nahhh, Carville didn't do nothing;

There are 100 senators but 50 governors so Palin has a more pretigious role.

As senator, Obama has hid behind the dysfunctional politics of congress whereas Palin had to take direct responsibility.

I'm excited enough about here that I might even donate a little to the McCain campaign.

i.e. while Obama talked about washington outsiders, it took Palin to get one.

blogger said...

Here's another thing I don't get.

Why the hell would Sarah Palin have said yes to McCain?

I mean, can you picture someone offering you the job? Knowing the media spotlight. Knowing you have to answer questions on an unbelievable host of domestic and foreign affairs issues.

Knowing that you'll have a one-on-one prime-time debate, against a guy with 30+ years of foreign policy experience.

Wow.

Then add in all her family troubles, and I find it amazing that Palin said yes.

And now, the fall.

It won't be pretty.

And McCain will of course blame the Dems, when in the end, he'll be blaming himself.

He could have lost with honor and dignity. But instead, we get this. A farce. A joke. Another sad chapter in recent American political history.

Sarah Palin will be the last unvetted VP pick, you can rest assured. Thanks to blogs and the 24-hour news cycle, we do the vetting now, not the candidate.

All VP's in the future will be ex-Presidential candidates and seasoned DC or State House veterans.

No more neophytes. Sarah Palin was the last.

I'll actually miss her. It sure was entertaining for a bit.

Obama and Palin both have thin resumes. Balance the ticket. Certainly someone of your intelligence understands this Keith. bitterrenter on the other hand... that's a different matter.

Now let me say this once again cause I'm certain a good portion of the audience already forgot. Obama has a thin resume (in the opinion of many many people).

blogger said...

Obama was last a community organizer in 1988, or 20 years ago. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1997. Over 10 years ago. And of course, a US Senator since 2004.

Palin by comparison was Mayor of a town of a few thousand people in Alaska, leaving in 2002. After that she was the director of indicted Senator Ted Stevens' 527 influence group. And she was governor of AK since Dec '06 - for the past 21 months. 93 weeks.

She has 93 weeks of meaningful experience. That's it. 93 f*cking weeks.

To say Palin has more experience, or anywhere near the experience of Obama, is a joke.

You either know that's a joke, and you're a spinning party hack, or you're a fool. One or the other.

And you're especially a fool if you think having 93 weeks of experience as the governor of a small remote state qualifies you to be President of the United States.

If Sarah Palin had run against McCain and Romney etc for President, she would have been laughed out of the room.

She's a good political choice, and actually can pass as a conservative. That's much more than I expected from McCain - I may even be able to vote for him now.

Palin hubbub shows bloggers' influence on race

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The blogs are alive with the sound of Sarah.

Republican candidate John McCain's staffers may deplore the online rumor mill that forced them to announce the pregnancy of newly minted running mate Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter.

But experts have some perhaps unwelcome advice: Get used to it.

"It used to be that a rumor would float across your desk and you'd say, 'That's just so outrageous we're not even going to respond to it,'" said Republican strategist Todd Harris, a former McCain spokesman. "But nowadays you really have to push back forcefully against almost every single bit of gossip and rumor."

Palin's announcement disrupted the campaign's carefully orchestrated plan to introduce the little-known governor to the public in a high-profile speech on Wednesday. Instead, it prompted reporters and bloggers to dig further into Palin's background and question the wisdom of McCain's pick.

"It probably let the cat out of the bag before they intended to let that information out," said Republican communications consultant David All.

consultant said...

Besides being completely unqualified for the Vice-Presidency of these United States, Sarah Palin gets the award for the WORST mother in the US.

McCain and Sarah Palin threw the daughter and boy friend under the bus. By offering her the position and by her accepting, the two of them put their ambition ahead of the welfare of the nation and Palin's family.

When logic and facts can't change your opinion, you are a fanatic. And a lot of the conservatives here are deep in fanatic territory.

I feel sorry for the daughter. She was trotted out on stage for her mother's acceptance speech, holding the down syndrome baby, with a blanket covering up her mid section. What was going through her mind? Was she humiliated?

This is callous calculation that would make a Nazi proud. It is disgusting. No caring mother would ever exploit their child like this. And not a word about this from the Party of family values. What a bunch of hypocrites.

McCain's judgement-Zero. McCain & Palin's integrity-less than Zero!

Out of all for people on the two tickets, Palin is the only one actually successfully combatted corruption and reduced the size of government. She is the only libertarian-leaning of all four candidates. Not having her at the top of ticket is really an injustice to her! Read this piece by another Ron Paul supporter:

"keith: No more neophytes. Sarah Palin was the last."

keith, keith, keith, keith... you're insulting women. while bachman didn't have a good response to that jab, my mother, who was a "stay at home mom," helped my brother get into Yale, where he got a Phd, and my sister into Texas A & M where she got one.

when she tried to get a job, they told her: "you have no experience."

personally, the most important experience Palin will bring is her lifestyle because people want simpler, scaled down, slower lives.

as far as I can tell, very few people have the luxary she had of living life slowly and I think that she's not going to have the typical ADD brain that washington insiders get.

the hope you should have keith is that, via globalization, the number of people studying technology will grow exponentially and, by using technology to find the potentially bright, we're going to have an era where intellectual growth rockets to the moon.

yes, things are bumpy right now but bush and cheny had the vision to actually deploy the type of technology which, while big brother, will also allow economic planners to locate the golden needles in the haystack.

and I think that this will have a huge impact since every single book I've read about education suggests that prolific thinkers start their careers before the age of 7!

hence, the neo-education era will, I think, ultimately understand that human potential is our most important resource and it must be harnessed in ways that we never thought possible!

in general, I support NCLB because only 31% of college graduates were "document literate" (able to read) in 2005 whereas 37% were in 1992.

moreover, I think that mccain/palin will continue to make underperforming educational systems a moral hazzard whereas obama will be more hesitant due to his association with teaching unions.

and, FYI, i specifically mentioned "document literacy" since, as we know, illiteracy was one of the primary reasons behind the subprime problems.

Keith,

"Knowing that you'll have a one-on-one prime-time debate, against a guy with 30+ years of foreign policy experience."

You will see just how shallow that 30+ years of nonsense is. Biden will come off like an idiot if Palin sticks to her common sensical approaches. Frankly, if the VP debate really centers around foreign policies, and if Palin sticks to her Alaskan libertarian roots (for self-determination, against empire), more and more people will come around to realize that McCain should be her VP!

"Then add in all her family troubles, and I find it amazing that Palin said yes."

What family trouble? Remember Carter's brother and Roger Clinton? Not to mention Hilary, Jennifer, Gennifer, etc. etc. Being a governor already exposes one to the typical media muck racking . . . a sitting VP attracts much less controversy position after the elections than a sitting governor. Aside from Chenney's tenure, no one cares about what VP does; that's only because Chenney was the real president. LOL

Sorry MEN. Sarah Palin will make you eat your words.

Actually, my girlfriend is more strongly against Palin than I am. She thinks its a SHOCKING BLUNDER for her to be picked, and even WORSE for her to ACCEPT and put her important new job between her and her current family issues.

My girlfriend's Florida Mom is even more disgusted than that.

And I'm sure my sister, niece and ex wife are outraged too. If my mom were alive, she'd probably be quietly furrowing her brow.

You better look around at some other blogs--a LOT of women, including ones who were GOING to vote Bush, will NOT now.

And before you gloat for too long about having a woman on the ticket, bear in mind THIS particular pick could set women-on-the-ticket back TWENTY YEARS if it goes badly.

Remember Al Sharpton trying to run for President?

You got twenty years to wait for the next woman candidate? Or wouldn't you rather have had McCain pick a GOOD woman VP he could win with THIS year?

They say smell is the sense most directly connected to the memory. I'm starting to smell a Mondale/Ferraro or Perot/Stockdale situation.

Remember Stockdale? "Who am I? Why am I here?" He was a POW too. Wait 'till the debates.

In an interview on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 Monday night, Obama was asked about whether his experience in the U.S. Senate dealing with weather-related situations compares to Palin’s executive experience running the state of Alaska and as the small town mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

“My understanding is that Gov. Palin’s town, Wassilla, has I think 50 employees. We've got 2500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year – we have a budget of about three times that just for the month,” Obama responded.

What a DUMB_ASS, he's qualified to be President???

"Very interesting, but stupid." Did Obama have a staff of 2500 people working for him while Governor Palin was Mayor of Wassila? Governor Palin became Mayor of Wasila in 1996, the same year Barack Obama was running for the Illinois State Senate. Somehow think 2500 might be a tad much for an Illinois State Senate campaign. Illinois Senators have district offices, so I assume once he was elected, he had a small staff, but certainly not 50 people.

In 2004 Obama was elected to the US Senate. U.S. Senators have staffs of 40 people. How long has Barack Obama had a cast of thoustands working for him? It's only been this year that the campaign has ramped up to that level when Sarah Palin has been governor, not mayor of Wasilla.

Try 15,000 people or six times the size of Obama's campaign. In addition, the State employees work in diverse areas such as labor, law enforcement, and highways while Obama's 2500 are dedicated to electing him. Palin has 15,000 employees to cover one of the largest states in the union where inclimate weather is a way of life.

According the Obama's OWN criteria, Palin is 6 TIMES MORE QUALIFIED than himself.

Wake up America, this guy is a MORON!!!

Keith,

93 weeks as governor is 93 weeks more than Obama has in any major executive position. What's Obama's voting record for his four years in the US Senate? "Present"? Isn't that like saying he sat on the pottie and refused to poop the whole time? Same with his voting record in the IL senate . . . it was so bad that the IL voters actually unseated him after one term

Yes, it would be even better if Palin stayed in Alaska, and eventually having the state spun off as its own independent republic, so the American Empire can give way to the original consitutional republic with willing participating states. However, at this juncture, we desperately need someone with fresh perspective in DC to wind down the fiasco that our American Empire has turned into. Obama, with his pandering and mortgage-banking friendly ways, especially with Biden the quintessential bankers' friend riding shotgun, is not the change that we need.

Barack Obama:

Graduated from Harvard Law School, magna cum laude, with a Juris Doctor in Constitutional Law. President of the Harvard Law Review and later lecturer in constitutional law.

He later worked, yes, as a community organizer, and for three years as a civil rights lawyer. He has eight years experience in the Illinois (pop. 12.5 million) state senate, followed by 4 years in the US Senate.

Sarah Palin:

Graduated without distinction from North Idaho College with a BA in Communications, and minored in political science.

She spent some time as a sportscaster in Anchorage, then worked in the commercial fishing industry. She spent 4 years on the city council of a town of 8000, followed by 6 years as mayor of the same town. She was later elected governor of Alaska (pop. 650000) and has been doing that for the past 18 months.

------

Please tell me how Sarah Palin is more qualified than Barack Obama.

Her 18 months as governor of a state that has half the population of Oklahoma City? That's right, the mayor of Oklahoma City has double the constituency of Sarah Palin, and you don't see anyone swooning in admiration for him.

Her municipal experience in a small town? If that constitutes relevant qualifications, then there is a whole nation of insurance agents and realtors ready to take up the helm of our great nation.

Really, how is this person qualified at all to lead the nation (since she'll be vp to a 72 year old cancer survivor, she's likely to be pres before 8 years is up)?

Frank R said...

And you have no idea what a state senator does, or what the mayor of a town of a few thousand people does.

I have several friends who are or have been state senators, and with all due respect to them, they don't do anything but show up to cast votes when they feel like it, and sponsor a bill handed to them by a lobbyist when it benefits them.

One left the state senate to become state treasurer, and another is leaving to run for corporation commission.

State senate is a starting place to get your name out and run for another office. It's not real leadership experience.

Republicans believe in Reaganomics - trickle down. They believe if they support the Republicans in power, they will prosper and become wealthy, just like the guys at the top. This is the lie they have bought. Because of how tempting this wealth delusion is, they still find it difficult to unwind themselves from this lie.

They also think the rest of us are stupid and they have contempt for us - they really do want us to think Palin is a replacement for Hillary. For that reason they are going to continue to spin Palin - not that they actually believe she is any good but because they think the rest of us are gullible fools and will believe them if they say they support her. This is not a new maneuver for them - think Bush's speech in NO after Katrina. Their objective is they just have to get us to believe she is someone that is really okay to vote for. That way they can stay in power and continue taking all the money - or so they desperately think.

But reality is catching up to them. I think the tide has turned - because of the blogs and the internet I think many people are waking up. There is chatter about Palin everywhere.

Either that or Republicans are just really stupid.

The Case Against the Case Against Palin

A very good friend, who is a lifelong Alaskan and one of the smartest people I know, offers this word of caution to those (yes, like me) inclined to take Sarah Palin lightly:

At the end of 2005, a close friend called to say that he begun writing speeches and talking points for a certain gubernatorial candidate.

"Remind me," I asked. "Who is Sarah Palin?"

I was dismayed at my friend’s choice of political entree. Why was he wasting his time on a relative nobody, trying to beat an incumbent governor (and former three term senator) in the Republican primary? It was utter folly. "Wait until the big money starts coming in for Murkowski," I said. "Wait until the party machinery goes to work on Palin. They will eat her for lunch."

Murkowski, for his part, expressed a similar view. "If I decide to," he said, "I will run and I will win. It's that simple."

The folly, of course, turned out to be my own (and Murkowski's), as Palin slaughtered the incumbent in the primary--posting a 30 point margin of victory--and went on to win the general (over a former Democratic governor) without seeming to break a sweat. She then quickly fulfilled an implicit campaign promise by slapping down ExxonMobil, BP, and ConocoPhillips in negotiations over a proposed Alaska natural gas pipeline, even though they, too, by all accounts, were well prepared to dine on her tender little frame. Not bad for a lightweight.

Listening to the Democratic leadership respond to John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate, one hears echoes of the Alaska Republican leadership from just a few years ago. Barack Obama’s spokesman, Bill Burton, put it this way: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency." Former mayor? If you're going to skip over her job as governor and, before that, her job heading the commission that oversees production of the largest petroleum reserves in America, why not "former high school student"? Bah, what does it matter: She's just a small town mayor, just a hockey mom, just a beauty pageant queen. Palin has never shunned these belittling monikers, in part, I imagine, because the camouflage has served her so well. Soothed by the litany, her opponents tend to sleep too late, sneer too much, and forget who it is that hires them.

Watching Palin operate over the past few years has been like witnessing a dramatic reading of All the King’s Men. In 2002, Murkowski had interviewed but passed over Palin in selecting a replacement for the senate seat he vacated to become governor. In a grand act of nepotism, he chose his own daughter instead. Palin was tossed a bone: She chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which oversees the production of petroleum in Alaska. When she reported conflicts of interest and other ethical violations by another commissioner, she was ignored by Murkowski’s chief of staff and ultimately resigned in frustration. One can imagine how the quick double dose of corruption--insiders having their way with the polity and its resources--sickened the young Palin. It also fired a savage competitiveness that is not, perhaps, apparent at first glance.

What the Republicans missed about Sarah Palin then--and what the Democrats seem poised to miss now--is that she is a true political savant; a candidate with a knack for identifying the key gripes of the populace and packaging herself as the solution. That keen political nose has enabled her to routinely outperform her resume. Nearly two years into her administration, she still racks up approval ratings of 80 per cent or better.

One might reasonably ask to what extent her local popularity is buoyed by the high price of oil (and thus, a budget surplus, and thus, the ability to carry a stick into meetings with big oil). One might speculate about the durability of her anti-corruption stance in light of her conflict of interest in the dismissal of her director of public safety. And only the truly feckless would not concern themselves about her dearth of foreign policy experience. But in probing this candidate, it would behoove the Democrats and the pundits to shed the notion that they are dealing with some dimwitted bumpkin (Dan Quayle seems to come up a lot lately) who’s going to start crying when they ask her to name the president of Azerbaijan; or that Palin is the townie who was brought into the Skull & Bones initiation night for the amusement of all; or that somehow the prom queen ballots got mixed up with the Alaska gubernatorial poll. Trivialize her at your own peril.

Sarah Palin is a living reminder that the ultimate source of political power in this country is not the Kennedy School or the Davos Summit or an Ariana Huffington salon; even now, power emanates from the electorate itself. More precisely, power in 2008 emanates from the working class electorates of Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Sooner or later, the Obama camp will realize that the beauty pageant queen is an enormously talented populist in a year that is ripe for populism. For their own sake, it had better be sooner.

The final paragraph of the twelfth amendment reads:

"But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

Therefore, the Vice-President must be constitutionally eligible for the Presidency. These requirements are that they must be a natural born citizen of the United States, that they be no less than thirty five years old, and that they have been a resident of the United States for at least fourteen years."

Nothing there about law degrees, millions of dollars, captain's of industry, military service etc etc. Hockey mom's are just as eligible. Our founding fathers kept it deliberately simple.

We have made it an unwritten rule to "have experience", after seeing what people with experience have done I would be willing to give a shot to someone with not so much experience. How much worse could they really do? Government is a huge machine, they are only one cog in it. Our founding fathers built that system like that too. I would submit that the only one truly qualified for the presidency are those that have already been president.

So if you believe that one person can do a better job than another pull the lever, punch the card, whatever. Don't get to spun up that someone else didn't see things your way. That is our way. We have seen some pretty high powered smart experienced people eff up in some pretty stupid ways.

Define "good education" I work with PhD's day in and day out. Smart people but some of them couldn't pour piss out of a boot with the instructions on the heel.
I don't see ignorance per se, I see difference of opinions. Everyone has different things that matter or don't matter to them.

Ignorance is relative, I am sure to some of those PhD's I am pretty ignorant. To others I am a pretty smart guy.

Hey Keith! Great news... have you heard?!? Via Philosoraptor:

Ham Sandwich McCain's Actual Choice for Veep

John McCain has revealed that his apparent choice of Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running-mate was, as many observers predicted, a carefully-staged hoax. "Yeah, right," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said of Palin, laughing with reporters. "As if! What do we look like, a bunch of complete lackwits? You guys will believe anything."

McCain's actual running mate will be a ham sandwich.

The sandwich, said by analysts to be "a little light on the ham," has never held any public office and is incapable of speech or rational thought. It is thought that the choice will solidify McCain's credentials as a "maverick."

"John McCain makes decisions with his gut," said Davis. "That's what Americans like, right?"

Some Democrats questioned whether a sandwich was qualified to be the Vice President of the United States, let alone President if anything should happen to McCain, 72.

Republican spokesmen fired back that any attempt to criticize the sandwich in any way would constitute a display of bigotry.

"Sandwiches are as American as apple pie," said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers, "and it's just like the Democrats to attack them, and, by implication, our entire American way of life, and, by further extension, the very human act of eating, and, by even further extension, life itself, and, by extensive extension, the very concept of existence, both for human beings, and indeed, for the entire universe and, perhaps, even alternative universes."

He suggested that Democrats would probably favor some more "Middle-Eastern-sounding food," such as "kabobs or tacos or something."

GOP surrogates soon fanned out to cable news networks to sing the praises of the sandwich.

"This is a bold and visionary choice by John McCain," said Republican commentator William Bennett, appearing on CNN. "The trade in pork and pork products is absolutely central to America's military might and economic development in the 21st century. There is simply no better choice for Vice President, and, in fact, any objective observer must question why there is nothing made of pork--nor, in fact, anything that is consumable in any way--on the Democratic ticket."

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden gave the McCain camp cautious praise for its choice. "Well, at least it wasn't Mitt Romeny," he said. "I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief about that."

Teddy Roosevelt is the answer. And I think he did pretty OK.

Now granted neither he or Palin did anything as extraordinary as organizing a community, but still....

Teddy Roosevelt was

* Republican member of the New York Assembly

* U.S. civil service commissioner

* Police commissioner of New York City

* Assistant secretary of the Navy

* Organized the Rough Riders

* Governor of New York

And again, Sarah Palin was in the PTA, was a sportscaster, was the part time mayor of a little joke town, and now governor of AK for a few months

Comparing Palin to Roosevelt is such a joke, I'm not sure why I even responded, but when I see ignorance in full flight I feel compelled to help

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The smart money thinks there's a better chance today than yesterday that John McCain will dump Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Before the Republican senator's presidential campaign disclosed the pregnancy of Palin's 17-year-old daughter, bookmakers in Britain and Ireland were offering 20-1 odds or higher on a bet that she would be forced off the ticket, meaning a 1 pound ($1.78) bet would pay 20 pounds. Now that same bet will pay no more than 8 pounds.

``While it is rare that a VP candidate gets dropped, it's not completely impossible,'' said Ken Robertson, political betting analyst at Paddy Power Plc, a Dublin-based gambling company. ``Lots of our punters are betting `Shocking' Sarah's days are numbered,'' he added, using a nickname he came up with for the first-term Alaska governor.

The Republicans brag that Palin has "executive experience." Why do they not bring up the fact the Alaska is an aberration state (so is Hawaii for that matter)? Stop the madness, Alaska is NOTHING like the rest of the US. It is completely dependent on federal largesse (PORK!); it looks more like socialism than capitalism. And the oil industry... The oil companies have been issueing checks to each resident for decades -- is that mainstream? There are around 1/2 million residents in the entire state so of course the government is the smallest and easiest to manage and quite corrupt and dependent on federal dollars (even small town Wasilla had a lobbying firm that advocates for it in DC). This is not experience that equips one to be an executive of the U.S. which really means the "lower 48" as the Alaskans like to call those of us in the other states. Come on, folks.

Palin nails down the conservative vote. The right wing and "self-described" conservatives make up 60 percent of the electorate.

McCain will win. And then die in peacefully his sleep. The babe will be the president.

Get used to it.

Both major parties are a disgrace. We need to have a major third party. Seriously.

However, this blog is too partisan, worshipping democrats, praising the "Obamessiah"

Please show some honesty, and stop the partisanship.

BOTH PARTIES passed that disgraceful housing bill. Both parties allowed this mess to happen. BOTH PARTIES DID THIS TO JOHN Q. TAXPAYER.

From Byron York:

Had a long talk this morning with a senior strategist in the McCain campaign. I think it’s fair to say Team McCain is seriously unhappy with a New York Times story, “Palin Disclosures Raise Questions On Vetting,” which came out this morning and is driving much of the coverage of the issue. The story begins:

A series of disclosures about Gov. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s choice as running mate, called into question on Monday how thoroughly Mr. McCain had examined her background before putting her on the Republican presidential ticket.

On Monday morning, Ms. Palin and her husband, Todd, issued a statement saying that their 17-year-old unmarried daughter, Bristol, was five months pregnant and that she intended to marry the father.

Among other less attention-grabbing news of the day: it was learned that Ms. Palin now has a private lawyer in a legislative ethics investigation in Alaska into whether she abused her power in dismissing the state’s public safety commissioner; that she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede; and that Mr. Palin was arrested 22 years ago on a drunken-driving charge.

The story, my campaign source told me, is “materially false.” Gov. Palin, the strategist said, was subjected to a “complete vet.” “That included her filling out a 70-question questionnaire that was highly intrusive and personal. She was then interviewed for more than three hours by A.B. Culvahouse. There were multiple follow-up interviews.” (I asked precisely how many follow-ups there were, but my source stuck with “multiple.”) “There was a thorough interview process,” the strategist continued. “There was a public records search and political vet. There was a private life and financial vet. Everything that has come out was known by the campaign through the vetting process.”

Okay. What about particulars? The strategist started at the bottom and moved up.

“Todd’s DUI — we judged that to be immaterial to the selection process. The ticket for fishing without a license — we judged that to be immaterial to the selection process.” On the charge that Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party, the strategist said, flatly, “She was never a member of the independence party, because she has been a registered Republican.” (Later, the McCain camp put out a statement saying it had provided reporters with “ALL voter registration documentation” showing that Palin has been a registered Republican since 1982 and “has never been a member of the AIP.”) And on the issue of Palin’s daughter Bristol being pregnant: “John McCain made a decision that did not affect his decision-making in terms of her qualifications.” (As far as the allegation that Gov. Palin faked a pregnancy to cover up for her daughter is concerned, it appears the McCain campaign knew about it and looked into it, but never very deeply because it had been proven false to the satisfaction of pretty much anyone outside The Atlantic or the DailyKos.)

From our conversation, it was clear that the McCain campaign paid a lot of attention to the so-called “Troopergate” issue. After all, unlike the “fake baby” story that has preoccupied the press, it is a real issue involving allegations that Palin abused her power. Last night, the McCain campaign distributed a "background guidance" memo to reporters on the issue. In our conversation, the strategist recounted much of the substance of that memo.

“Of course this issue came up in the vetting, and this is what we discovered,” the source said. “The man who was fired has said on the record that he was never pressured by the governor or the governor’s husband on the issue of firing Trooper Wooten. The governor had a vision for how she wanted that department to be run. The commissioner had a different vision.”

“The reason that members of the Palin family were having discussions with the head of the state police about this state trooper, who was her ex-brother-in-law, was because he had made threats against the family. He threatened to kill the governor's daughter, her father, and her sister. He tasered her 11-year-old stepson. And that is why the Palin family was concerned about this trooper.”

I brought up accusations that the McCain team has performed a “legal vet” on Palin but did not perform a “political vet.” In addition to the accusation that Palin had been a member of the Alaska Independence Party, there were issues like her change in position on the “bridge to nowhere” and her support for raising sales taxes in Wasilla, Alaska. “Change on the ‘bridge to nowhere?’” my source asked. “Are you saying there’s somebody out there who believes that should disqualify her to be vice president?” Barack Obama has changed his mind on a few things, the strategist added. As for sales taxes in Wasilla, the source said, “Every aspect of her political record is known to us. These people [McCain’s opponents] are desperate.”

As for what materials the campaign examined in the vetting, the source told me they checked out (almost) everything. “The only thing the campaign did not look at was the microfilm of the local newspaper, because it was impossible to look at the microfilm without revealing the search process,” the strategist said. “We made a calculation that we would be able to get all the information from the Anchorage newspaper, that it was unlikely that there would be items in the local papers that were problematic that didn’t make it to the Anchorage paper.”

Ressurgent Russian bear and belligerant Iran fear McCain. After McCain gets in and Iran is dealt with militarily, we will have cheaper oil in the USA and Europe again. If Obama gets in and pulls out of the middle east, watch oil go over $250 a barrel overnight. By the way, Thompson's speech was awesome. I want him for SEC of Defense.

"Therefore, the Vice-President must be constitutionally eligible for the Presidency. These requirements are that they must be a natural born citizen of the United States, that they be no less than thirty five years old, and that they have been a resident of the United States for at least fourteen years."

John McCain was not born in the United States -- he was born in Panama.

"And of course, a US Senator since 2004."

Actually, he became a senator in 2005. And, in fairness, most of that time he has been running for President, how much time has he actually spent "in the Senate"?
And I think being the mayor of a town is roughly the same from a value of experience perspective as being in the state legislature - heck, there are 59 State Senators in Illinois.

Both candidates are fairly thin on "experience", but experience is not really an indicator of what kind of President someone will be. For the Democrats, it only became important when they realized there was someone else on a ticket who could be portrayed as having less experience than Obama, then experience became of paramount importance.

We will ahve to hear what PAlin has to say over the next two months, I would guess that 99% of those speculating, for example, as to how she would deal with a summit with Putin have absolutely no freakin' clue how she would deal with it (admittedly, that might be part of the problem), they are just making assumptions based on no evidence whatsoever.

Can someone point me to a blog where people discuss the overpriced housing market and tenous credit markets?

C'mon Keith. Are you just realizing what ignorant nutjobs conservatives and republicans are?? Kinda makes all that "both parties are the same" stuff seem a little forced.

My advice to you: Stay in Europe. This country hasn't got a prayer with all the brainstems that inhabit it. You've been gone for a while now, you've seen what a real culture is like, a culture with a much smaller percentage of white trash conservatism. I envy you. If I could afford to I'd renounce my citizenship and leave this cesspool of a country.

Come now, my confused and frightened friends, no one said late stage capitalism would be fun. It was a good ride for most of us, even if we did need to stay in the shallow end of the pool. Like any party, only the drunks are left at the end.

kakistocracy (kăk'ĭ-stŏk'rə-sē, kä'kĭ-)

n., pl. -cies.
Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.

[Greek kakistos, worst, superlative of kakos, bad; see caco– + –CRACY.]

Keith,

Excellent post. But as an avid Michigan football fan, by selecting that particular "Hail Mary" link, you ripped my heart out like an Aztec medicine man!
Next time use the Doug Flutie Hail Mary Link vs. the Miami (Fla.) convicts from 1984. Thanks!

The thing about Sarah Palin is that she is high octane melodrama, all day long. It has been less than a week, and look at what we do know! She has pretty close ties to an Alaskan secessionist group, for crying out loud! Is she competent to lead the country? Who really knows? If the Bill and Hillary carnival wasn't enough, I think this will be simply quite the spectacle.

Republicans believe in Reaganomics - trickle down. They believe if they support the Republicans in power, they will prosper and become wealthy, just like the guys at the top. This is the lie they have bought. Because of how tempting this wealth delusion is, they still find it difficult to unwind themselves from this lie.

So if we take the money away from the guys at the top - you know, the ones who write the paychecks - then who will write those checks? Who will pay those benefits you demand from employers for free?

This issue shows that you libs have single-digit IQs. Your plan failed miserably in the USSR so how will it be any different here?

DOPES!

I love it! The Obama camp started railing on her inexperience...until it raised the topic of BO's inexperience.

The very fact that the Democratic presidential nominee has to compete with the Republican's VP candidate over experience is LOL funny.

This is great fun!! I see the liberals, socialists & democrats foaming at the mouths and going cross eyed. Their ultimate nightmare stands before them, and by their reaction,,McCain & Palin have a high chance of winning this one.
I personally hate McCain & Obama - two sleeze balls, but I will now vote for McCain for the only reason that Palin is his VP pick. I like Palin because she's unvarnished - raw and real, and is who she is. She IS the real working class American - not the socialist variety.
This is all heading to American street wars anyway, I'm just picking my side now.

But...but...but...Sarah Palin has a great body......and Republicans vote with their penis. So of course they will win this time without any help from the Supremes or Diebold.
