Corrupt GOP Senator Ted Stevens indicted on seven counts. One down, 99 to go.

How very appropriate that his home got him into trouble.

Greed.

Corruption.

Welcome to the American Congress, circa 2008.

History will not be kind.

Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and a figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, was indicted Tuesday on seven counts of failing to disclose thousands of dollars in services he received from a company that helped renovate his home.

The first sitting U.S. senator to face federal indictment since 1993, Stevens has been dogged by a federal investigation into his home renovation project and his dealings with wealthy oil contractors.

Prosecutors said Stevens received more than $250,000 in gifts and services from VECO Corp., a powerful oil services contractor, and its executives. From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said, the 84-year-old senator concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation."

Keith,

Don't miss this story from the WaPo.

It's amazing that these things can go on this long.
Stevens was brazen about his theft in public and what he has been indicted on is a fraction of his illicit gains.
I frequently get told about America's "lack of corruption" as a competitive advantage. This view can only be held by those that have never run a business here.

Sounds like a lot, but it was all in gifts and disposable junk. Kinda hard for anyone to equate it with a dollar value as the freebies went on, year after year.

Now, $250,000 cash in one chunk, that I could see as raising a red flag.

Interesting how he is "GOP Senator Stevens". Yet it was always Chris Dodd, Senator. It was never Democrat Senator Chris Dodd.

I wonder why that is.

And the MSM is of course out for blood on Stevens. Yet Dodd accepting Countrywide bribes was buried on p.24 if reported at all.

I wonder why that is.

Great work! I like the polling questions. The most troubling question or results are:

Are you surprised about the lack of arrests?

I hope the people answering no are doing so because they believe the system is corrupt instead of those in charge being innocent.

I'm sure the Libertarians will argue that the answer is more deregulation.

Idiots.

just call yourself a democrat like the murderer Kennedy or the young gay hooker business owner frank, or the ku klux klan wizard william byrd, or william jefferson with 100,000 in the freezer, then you can stay up to 44 more years

All you need to know:

One day after being indicted on charges of falsifying information on his financial disclosure forms, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was welcomed warmly by his longtime Senate colleagues.

Avoiding his usual route to the chamber, Stevens arrived through a back door to friendly greetings from Republicans and some Democrats. The embattled Alaskan lawmaker received numerous pats on the back and an arm bump from Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), who is undergoing chemotherapy for a second bout of Hodgkin’s disease.

Stuck in So Pa,

Even if the "gifts" trickled in each and every day for 6 years, it's $100 a day. Which is pretty damn noticable on the family budget...
