Every time you buy something Chinese you do business with the devil. Stop it. Boycott China.

Boycott all Chinese goods this Christmas and beyond.

Not one more underpriced piece of Chinese crap from Wal-Mart, that's all I ask.

Check your labels. And just stop it. And stop trying to bargain and justify why you do it. "But the prices are so good, and I can't afford American". "But if we do business with them they'll change". "But they're not manipulating their currency". "But it's OK that they own us now".

Folks, every time you buy something Chinese, you do business with the devil. And now, when your kids start dying from unsafe slave-labor-produced Chinese crap you got on sale at Wal-Mart, you'll know you had been warned.

Here's just four more reasons to boycott China. And there's thousands and thousands more.

* U.S. safety officials have voluntarily recalled about 4.2 million Chinese-made Aqua Dots toys contaminated with a powerful "date rape" drug that has caused some children to vomit and lose consciousness upon ingesting the contents.

* Jerry Yang, the chief executive of Yahoo, apologized to the mother of an imprisoned Chinese dissident during testimony Tuesday at a heated U.S. congressional hearing on the company's role in jailing the man.

* The massive U.S. dollar sell-off was sparked by comments overnight by two Chinese officials suggesting the greenback is losing its global pre-eminence. China is the world's largest holder of U.S. dollar reserves. It also holds roughly 25 per cent of the world's foreign currency reserves, most of it in U.S. dollars.

* In China, however ultrasound technology functions as the means to a much different end. There, because of the Communist government’s brutal 25-year one child policy, and since boys are considered more valuable than girls—as they carry on the family name and are expected to care for aging parents—ultrasound machines are employed to determine the sex of the baby. Then, if the baby is a girl, abort her.

I'm a Bitter Renter earning minimum wage and paying more than half my income for rent. Sometimes I cannot afford to buy higher-priced goods NOT made in China. Where would I get the money to do so?

Keith,

I sold my house in 2005 and I am waiting for the total implosion of the housing market before I get back in. I would like to commend you for your site, it was influential in my decision to sell in 2005 rather than later.

Once again you're spot on. We need to keep the Chinese sh@t out of the lives of our families.

one woman tried to buy stuff that was made in other places and the USA and found out that there was virtually nothing produced in the USA any more. So where are we going to go to buy things? Every company is sending out their production to INDIA, BANGLEDESH, MEXICO, CHINA, and heaven knows where else charging 50 dollars for a product that only cost 2 dollars to mass produce. I say We already have enough junk in our houses hense junk filled garages and garage sales (please take our junk off our hands we don't want to give it to the salvation army we paid good money for this)What people need to do is really just stop shopping period and use what we have. That alone will stop any more money going into China or any other country. But NO we have a cell phone but now that isn't good enough we need a IPhone or our IPod is still good no problems but we want the new sexier IPod that essentially does the same thing. Until we learn to not satify our inner-child we will never stop shopping to excess and giving in to the little child that lives in all of us. I mean do we really need all the junk we have or does the little kid say "the one with most toys wins" and then tries to be the winner. I don't remember needing half the stuff I have when I was younger and I didn't miss it. I never had cell phones and still was able to get the news and make emergency calls but now the cell phone companies try to feed your inner child by saying "STAY IN TOUCH' or remind you of an emergency on the road late at night it's raining and your kid is in the back seat thank god you have SPRINT. This is a ingrained consumer driven neurosis and it will take a painful treatment of "tough love" to end it.

I can understand why you would be pissed off about China..but you better get used it.

You honestly think that the US back in the day of the Industrial revolution was this cuddly, god-fearin', everyone is equal paradise? Bullshit! There were riots, union busters, child labor, plants spewing all sorts of filth and unequal pay for all classes.

The only difference now between "us" and "them" is 75+ years of getting the kinks out of our enterprises and capitalist system.

We're going forward with a World Economy if you like it or not. What effects something in Nambia is going to affect us. If you want to rally against the Chinese why don't you rally against Saudi Arabia, or Russia, or Iran, or any of the other countries that sometimes go against US interests especially energy consumption and sales.

I think what's going on with some Chinese goods is wrong and I'm glad we're forcing their hand to ship up but boycotting something across the board: bullheaded and stupid. Good luck trying to do it to every product. You're not going to get too far...

Anonymous said...

If you don't buy Chinese goods anymore I guess you ain't buying anymore 'cos just about everything is Made in China. It's not like there're American or European alternatives anymore.
On the issue of aborting female fetuses; I guess it makes sense if you're trying to fight over population. Males by themselves have an awfully hard time reproducing. Of course it will suck if you're a guy in China and there's only one female for every 5 guys. I suppose you'll have to turn gay out of sheer desperation.

first post - I love this blog but this post is both racist and juvenile. just some basic rebuttals:

1. The reason China has so much of our money is because we've become such an ultra-consumerist entitlement culture. Don't boycott Chinese goods, boycott your own need for all the crap that pollutes your life. Spend less on crap and more on local foods and services.

2. When the US dollar goes lower, it hurts people who hold dollar denominated assets but it helps businesses that export goods. Businesses that employ Americans who can then hire more people, pay people higher jobs etc. A lower dollar isn't 100% bad thing.. you just have to invest correctly to hedge against it.

Most Chinese people aren't out to get Americans.. they're just responding to the same market incentives that Americans respond to.

great thought, yo-yo...

why don't you compile a list of things/brands that are made in America and commonly available -

the only way this will change is if the dollar drops another 50-90%...

It’s time, WE, The People of the World, stop turning a blind eye to the atrocities people in third world countries are forced to accept at OUR expense!

Don't pretend you know China when you apparently know nothing.

How many in this country are blaming China for the high oil price? Without the one-child policy, China may have 2.6 billion population instead of 1.3 billion and the oil you Americans care so much about could be at $200 instead of $100.

Boycott China? I wish you good luck. Oh BTW, there's one devil on the planet and everybody knows where it is!

I'm not a fan of China at all, but they are one of the few countries to attempt to tackle the overpopulation problem. No American politician has guts to even mention population control. For example, each year traffic gets worse and worse, and all they can come up with is HOV lanes... totally ignoring the cause of the problem: An ever-expanding population. We don't need any more frickin' people in the world. We are on a planet with very finite energy sources that we are rapidly consuming. Ultimately, war with China over oil resources is almost inevitable.

Also, stop doing business with Corporations that only want slave labor from other countries . We should pass a law that business will have to give the same wages that they would give to Americans and than you would see the Corporations come back to America.

The next time I hear a cable business news expert say that Americans need to compete with 50 cent a hour slave labor from a third world country ,I am going to scream .

Corporations have just gotten a little to greedy for profits due to slave labor in the last decade.
Why should we allow the middle glass in America to die because they can't get good paying jobs because the American Corporations are only concerned with global markets and cheap labor .

Keith, although the one child policy is a policy of forced abortions, and abortions of unwanted children, would you prefer to see China with unchecked population growth? Perhaps 4 billion people instead of 1.3 billion? Then I suppose you would be complaining about irresponsible population growth?

Few responses - good thread by the way

1) How do you avoid buying chinese crap when it's everywhere?

STOP BUYING CRAP

Do you need more stuff? Do you need to spend every weekend shopping? Is all that stuff making you happier?

If you need something, take the time and shop local. Try the second hand stores and ebay. But above all, ask yourself why you're buying so much stuff.

2) On overpopulation and China's evil 1-kid policy.

I don't believe the government should subsidize people having kids, but it definitely should not try to control people having kids. That's simply evil. And when they do, you get what China's getting, which is the slaughter of girls, and a society without enough women. The men without mates, women and sex will not be happy in a few years, and watch them launch wars to go acquire countries with women. Weird things will happen because of this sick policy

3) On what countries do I buy from?

I check my labels, and if I'm not comfortable with the country of origin, I don't buy it. But then again, I don't buy much stuff. Biggest thing here is figuring out where food is from - that's tough. But retailers are doing a better job noting it. And you'll never know where the chemicals and ingredients are from. So you can't be perfect. But you can try. That's all I ask.

And above all, buy less stuff.

Anonymous said...

I try not to purchase "Made in China" items, particularly for items that touch my food (Dishes, etc) and my body. Although, I'm not concerned with buying American, just buying from countries that don't produce crap.

Regardless, I don't find it very hard to find alternatives to Chinese crap.
At least from my experience the only time I can't find alternatives is when I'm looking at junk (cheap kids toys etc) or some electric items.

One doesn't need to be a zealot about it, but checking for alternatives from developed countries doesn't take much effort.

I was in Walmart last night looking for Christmas lights. It was a very disturbing experience. If you look on every item that has Christmas lights (trees, lights, wreaths etc...) you will see a "Caution P65 Warning". The warning states that handling the coated wires exposes you to lead and you should wash your hands after coming in contact with them.

Ok...that is scary but then it dawned on me. How may Walmart shoppers dont read English? How many of those who dont read english put up decorations and then head off to thier jobs in the food industry and touch the food?

How many of us then injest that food and the small dose of heavy metal?

Keith,

I have been reading your blog for some time and thought it made a lot of sense but this one I'm not so sure about. I think much of the made in China products are made by US companies that moved their production from USA to there for the lower labor cost. That is just the basic ecomonic trend and certainly out government isn't going to protect common people over big corporations bottom line. To single out a country and blame them for everything wrong here seems a bit thoughtless.

-------

Obviously, I'm not Keith, but I'll take a stab at YOUR question anyway.

It's going to be easier and easier to not buy chinese stuff. Stores are going out of business left and right.

I guess you didnt know Bombay Co. is going out of business, with Cost Plus following close behind. And that's just for starters. There's going to be a lot less crappy retailers a year from now. But I guess you didnt know that either.

Hopefully with retailers closing up shop, this country will be on the right track to re-building our manufacturing base here in the US. One would only hope...

Everyone knows Macy's and other high end furniture companies has been selling crap for years. Why dont you try looking on Craigs List, in antique stores, or even second hand stores, garage sales, estate sales? These are the only places to find quality, well made furniture. Find a local craftsman to recover or refinish it to your specifications, that would help your small local businesses.

Of course YOU may have to learn to become patient and flexable. I don't mean this in a bad way, but it sounds to me, YOU could learn to be resourceful and industrious. in addition to curbing that "I want it now" attitude.

This upcoming Greater Recession will kill the shopping instint in everyone. Trust me.

By chance is your name Redboots?

You honestly think that the US back in the day of the Industrial revolution was this cuddly, god-fearin', everyone is equal paradise? Bullshit! There were riots, union busters, child labor, plants spewing all sorts of filth and unequal pay for all classes.

Exactly. The GOP wants to turn back the clock not just to 1929, but to 1880. Or even 1859.

It was LIBERALS who fixed those problems, and contrary to the bleating of the right wing then--- which sounds exactly like the right wing noise machine ("communists", "socialists", "unamerican", "atheist scum") --- the USA didn't turn into the USSR, and it thrived quite well.

There were general benefits for all.

More socialist Europe, despite being obliterated in WW2, now is a very prosperous and good place to live. You'd think that if moderate socialism and capitalism mixed was so bad it'd be a hellhole. It isn't.

In my field (physics/chaos theory) (back when I had a University job), in the last 5 years most of the foreign researchers have been going back to Europe, because there's more opportunity and full-time career jobs there.

That didn't used to happen---it was the USA who had more opportunity, jobs and especially good research money. They came here.

Now it isn't so, the USA is stagnating and other places, including Europe and others are rising rapidly.

I had to leave because of no funding too, but I don't have an EU passport and can't realistically get an EU job (they prefer their own, like in every other country except USA).

In my new job, I've been there two months. Already two Indian natives have gone back to work in jobs---these are high level MS/PhD in math end engineering sorts from top universities. One is going to a major Indian research institution.

It used to be the other way around, they came to USA for Bell Labs, etc.

Keith, let me educate you about a few things because I run an off-shore consulting company in China.

First, ultrasounds have been made illegal because of the practice that you mention. That's the good news (I guess). The bad news is they force women to get their tubes tied. You get a letter in the mail like clockwork six months after you've given birth.

Second, I've been to China three times now (two weeks each trip), it is a beautiful place, a rich culture and great people. It's the government who are the problem, brutal and oppressive.

Final point, yes I am dealing with the devil, I make quite a bit of money moving work off-shore. I don't make the rules, I just play by them. Our dumb ass monetary policy allows China to peg their currency. They don't do so without risk, as they are importing our inflation and keeping their population poor.

My wife and I made a decision nealy 5 years ago to avoid buying PRC (Taiwan was OK).

We have seen virtually every US and European consumer manufacturer outsource their production to China.

The backlash is brewing, however. I increasingly notice out-and-out deceptive country of origin information, such as "Designed by" or "produced for", with no information on the actual country of manufacture.

We have virtually given up on buying new. 95% of our non-food and clothing purchases are made second-hand, through CL, Goodwill, and consignment shops.

Shopping second hand requires much more patience and discipline, especially since you must pay CASH for everything. The rewards eventually accrue, however.

If you have to buy Chinese, at least buy it used - that way, the PRC doesn't get your $ to spend on ballistic missile submarines.

Sounds like a good reason to prepare your own food. Doing so also saves money, is usually better for you, and decreases the demand for illegals.

Try putting "made in USA" in google. There are sites that list things that are still made in America.

But I agree that we can all buy way less than we do, and buy good stuff that will last, and take care of it.

one woman tried to buy stuff that was made in other places and the USA and found out that there was virtually nothing produced in the USA any more. So where are we going to go to buy things?

Local produce market (every city has one), recycle, vintage, used stuff from eBay, used stuff from Amazon.com. Just reduce your shopping of Chinese goods. You can find ANYTHING used these days for sale on eBay, flea markets, Craigslist, etc. People are just lazy and love the ritual of going to the mall.

I don't know why most people here can't grasp the idea of cutting back on Chinese crap. Sure, 95% of products out there are made in China. Nobody here is saying to just stop buying everything made in China, but to cut back by buying used stuff from eBay, flea markets, local producers, Craigslist, barter things that you don't need anymore.

Is that really sooooo hard to understand or some of you are just a bunch of the usual trolls who live here?

Why do you need to trade cell phones every freaking season? Can't you find used clothing and toys on eBay for your kids, for 1/5 of the regular price? Do you have to shop like a maniac every month? Just cut back on Chinese crap! Don't worry about the American jobs because most of those jobs are already in China or India, thanks to you and Wal-Mart.

Quit it with the xenophobia. Your blog is much better than that.

Listen buddy, nobody here is racist. You can pull the race card as much as you want, since it's a cheap shot of last recourse, a troll favorite. However, some of us impartial and with a functioning brain realize that we are in a class warfare and need more Americans with balls to fight it, not pussies like you. So, if you are not willing to participate, just move on and keep being a Chinese bitch because it fits well your character.

Nothing against Chinese people per se, but some of us refuse to bend over for trade policies that are killing our class. The only thing that we can do is stop participating in this fools game created by corporate fascists.

A few important topics missing:

1. China has about 6,000 spies in the US performing industrial espionage to steal our inventions.

2. We are spending more oil and creating more emissions to import products made in China, instead of buying from Made in USA.

3. China is the largest producer of pirated products: Anything from software, handbags, DVDs, CDs, pharma, etc.

4. China steals American patents, copies the American products, and floods our market with them.

5. The Chinese government hates you.
