Paranoid realtors getting desperate, now blaming banks and newspapers for their ills

Oh, man, it's really getting ugly now as realtors' money and career prospects dry up. I'm reminded of "the center doesn't hold" and "every man for himself" at this point. Cannibalism is next I believe... and attacks on the bubble bloggers...

Are Banks, Newspapers Behind Recent Real Estate Industry Rants?

First, the blow below the belt.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2006, dozens of newspapers across the nation published the so-called report, "How The Real Estate Cartel Harms Consumers and How Consumers Can Protect Themselves," by the executive director of the Consumer Federation of America.

Then the uppercut, published the same day in the New York Times by a Brookings Institution senior fellow. "Commission Accomplished" is also a diatribe that criticizes the real estate industry and its commissions. Both reports are unabashed, unsubstantiated opinion pieces, and what's strange is that they both appeared on exactly the same day. Why? What do these people have to gain?

It's no secret that banks want to get into real estate, and have used everything from the Treasury, to Oxley, to HUD, to the Department of Justice to accomplish it. They are the leaders of the Replace-Realtors-With-Us Cartel.

But guess what? There's a willing ally. Newspapers want to get into real estate, too. So they're only too happy to pile on Realtors. And they come with a handy cartel of their own!

Realtors - are you angry yet? Have you had enough yet? It's high time the real estate industry hit 'em back where it hurts, just like they hit the real estate industry.

Why would realtors be angry? Competition is nothing new Keith. Success is always dependent on an ability to develop/maintain competitive advantage.
*IF* individuals within the R.I.C (as you like to say) point the finger of blame for their personal careers or a shift in the market, they're only manifesting the same widespread disease.

A desire to get rich quick, without hard work (i.e. the gambler mentality).
A desire to blame someone else for our own mistakes (lack of accountability).
A distinct inability to generate or sustain independent/critical thought (who did we elect as President, again?)

Frankly, I look forward to a thinning of the ranks (if it happens). There's too much unprofessionalism in this industry and standards need to be raised.

Now, tell us more about your marketing firm/career Keith. What products and services have you marketed?

I need to refill my quiver.

os - what's your take on this article's conspiracy theory?

in terms of marketing, what I market and develop does good in the world - helps people better their lives, get included instead of excluded

and that's one thing you can take to the bank - the ranks of realtors will be significantly thinned - and those that were ethical, and those that can outlast, will do OK. even though Mr. Big Bad Internet (disintermediation) will hurt

Keith,
Many of the articles on Realty Times are fairly low quality and this one is definitely so. One of the reasons I rarely visit the site.

Conspiracy? I think Blanche is going a little far. Also, competition engaging in aggressive and coordinated tactics is nothing new or particularly conspiratorial.

Yes of course, there are other industries that would like to move into real estate. After the demise of Glass-Steagall, financial firms have rapidly expanded their role. Meanwhile most larger real estate franchises are already vertically integrated. It's only a matter of time before a bank buys a large franchise (if it already hasn't happened) and takes it to the next level.

I usually find it interesting when opposing views are presented. Digging into the deeper motivation of the opposing side can also be useful, at times.

It's funny. This article is somewhat similar to the way you pointed out the financial backers of Harvard, when its most recent housing survey was less negative than you expected. Blanche is a bit more hysterical sounding.

p.s. Hundreds of brokerages, franchise or not, have some degree of vertical integration already (including my office).
