I agree with Anon 11:51. This was not a failure of capitalism - this was the hijacking of capitalism for political and ideological purposes.
Capitalism is an airplane, a miracle of modern technology, capable of transporting us all to a better life. However, with a full tank of fuel and the wrong people in the cockpit, Capitalism is a weapon whose destructive power can demolish the very edifice of civilized society.
We need to 'Volckerize' the Fed. We need to change it's mandate to focus exclusively on minimizing inflation and supplying only enough money to support a growing economy.
Monetary policy should not be used to maintain growth or employment levels. Monetary policy should not be an instrument of social policy.
