HousingPANIC Stupid Question of the Day

Are HP'ers elitists?

I don't think an HPer is an "Elite". Just someone who began to see that all of the crazy real estate activity of the last few years as a form of "Tulip mania". A view of common sense in an economy gone mad.
Unfortunately for HPers, the Government believes that that Tulips need to be watered constantly to keep them from withering away and are drowning all the plant life in the process.

Wisdom is a commodity that is free to all who seek it. HPers are the opposite of elitists - some of us can't even spell 'losers' (ie: not 'loosers').

But we somehow have the perspective, objectivity and, dare I say, wisdom to have seen this bubble for what it is. And we offer that vision and it's benefits for free to all who seek it.

That's not elitism, that's leadership.

Sometimes I think but for the grace of the Flying Spaghetti Monster go I. I just wasn't in the market. Some smart, good people got caught up in this. I know a few. They weren't out to scam anyone. It seems like just being part of the housing market in any form had the potential to infect you, like ebola. Maybe you didn't eat the monkey brains, but the guy next to you did and you were standing too close when he started coughing. The only form of protection was not to go to the infected village (not participate in any form with the market) or to have a hazmat suit to protect you from the virus (been reading HousingPanic since 2004). In this case elite can also equal "lucky".

ELITISTS?

NO...

HARBINGER'S OF DOOM?

YES!!!

DOPES!!!

"2. consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group."

That particular definition fits...I am very proud to participate in a group that is favored with such wisdom. Which, as Paul said, is FREE if someone takes the time and cares enough to look. That's what separates us from the rest of the sheeple. And if that separation makes me an elitist, I shrug and smile.

HP is not a blog full of elitists as the term is used in the parlance of our times (the DUDE!)...we're REALISTS. Doom and gloom and all, it's REAL.

HPers are not an elite (How can someone in a rented flat be in an elite?). It's just that everyone else is a roasted snapper turtle.

Are we talking about Obama?

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Please government - save us. Only you know what is right. Us peasants don't know jack. We need the elites to rule us for our own good...

Keith,

I am dismayed at the title of your topic. You are wasting time that could very well be used in clinging on to your guns and religion! Please stop being so arrogant, bitter, angry and socialist. Go do some shooting practice with Ed.

NO, HPers not.

but Obama is an elitist pig with his humble $4,200,000 income for 2007

The thing with this bubble that still amazes me is that som many otherwise smart people still don't see any problems, at least here in Norway.

We are and we are snobs!

In their own minds? Of course. But then, who isn't?

To be a true elitist you have to be at the tops in one quantitative way or another.

Net worth
Income (working on it!)
Education (ME!)
Retired young (my dad)
(Fill in the blank)

HP'ers just don't have an anchor(albatross depending on the situation) in terms of a house/home for the most part - so no, that doesn't make them true elitists, just confused and self-delusional. :)

No, but Obama is

It's good to be proven right after being labeled a "chicken little" by the real elitists as they thumbed their noses in salvos of horse laughter.

Schadenfreude is not Elitist. We were the proverbial guy on the corner holding up a sign decrying the conspiracy. The "chicken littles" and Jealous Bitter Renters according to the other side.

Our friends, families and associates all got caught up in the ether. But we saw the truth, and dodged the bullet.

Now they will suffer financial crisis or worse. The problem is the storm will likely be so bad we will suffer as collateral casualties.

Ironic really: we didn't ride the wave up and reap all the temporary benefits and now we get to suffer alongside the FBs.

So elitist? No, just realists.

Yeah, if being elite means being intelligent. Americans, for some reason (probably Fox News)think that being an intellectual means you are being superior to the rest. I can't stand this mentality: if only the stupid ass americans would start to value intellect and intelligence again, then we would start to be a better country. Fox News perpuates the hatred toward "the liberal intellectuals". I HATE with every fiber of my body Fox News and all that are associated with it. Why do the terrorists never target the realy enemies like Fox? Oh yeah, I forgot, this War on Terror is just propaganda by Fox and the NeoCon GOP...they control who gets killed.

Nah, HPers aren't elitist, although the pro-socialist stuff is getting very tiresome.

To me, "elitist" describes the typical Scottsdale pig who is in financial disaster and works two shifts at McDonald's to keep the BMW payments up, but still has a snotty sh*tty attitude thinking they're better than renters.

"Yeah, if being elite means being intelligent. Americans, for some reason (probably Fox News) think...Fox News...I HATE with every fiber of my body Fox News"

The first step is admitting you have a problem...

Fox News is not responsible for every ill in your little world...wait. Maybe your world is extremely small and narrow. Hmmm... OK, I take it back. So Fox News maybe is responsible for every ill in your little world. So are your parents for making the mistake of breeding. Do you obsess over them, too?

When I started reading it back I believe in the middle of 2004 this site was...Thinkers, libetarians and semi-kooks...As the market crashed and people started jumping on the bandwagon we picked up intellectuals and semi-yuppies.

It went from scared Americans (Because of this site I netted an amount that paid all my debts which was almost up to $200k in misc debts, credit cards, school loans and I thank God & this site for letting me see straightly)to people bragging "I have this stock...Or I have that stock or commodity...Or the world can crash and it won't affect me." (Many in a snobby way...I'm actually happy when people do well and support themselves...means they won't need my help that can go to someone else)

That's when it became "Elitist."

If you disagree you become a person saying that according to them as "Jealous or envious."

People need to stop bragging because in the end it's petty and looks JUST LIKE the morons who got in over their heads with the pools and stainless steel fridges they had to have.

Sometimes the blog isn't about what should we do but a recap of what we have it seems and that gets old.

I've been poor, I've been semi-rich...Now I'm just middle class but if you really love your country do something volunteer, help out don't just squawk.

I find myself checking out other sites because as usual you have snotty liberal braggers and some rather angry excuse making rightwingers slinging mud on each other...Making this just one cyber junior high.

Tell you the truth if I wanted your stuff I would just take it...Because some of us are libetarians in the old sense and not only can we live with a lot or a little but not too shabby with weapons either...So unless you want to live like the whites in south africa or the rich in brazil...play nicer and keep the bragging to the minumum.

"Ask not what your country can do for you...Ask what you can do for your country."-JFK

"Yeah, if being elite means being intelligent."

Yes, bubblegirl, that is the american translation for "intelligent". Also, if you look up "informed", or "critical thinker" in the american-english dictionary you will find "elite" and sometimes "snob". Who wants to be called THAT? The terror created by this state of mind also explains why so many youngsters in America leave high school before getting a degree.

A broken clock is right twice a day...

The realtors will be right again. And you will be wrong. Then you will be right again. But you'll still be renting, which won't be all that bad since with all your savings you'll all be able to pay mortgages into your 80s once you finally do get serious about your future and buy a house. And you will be paying mortgages into your 80s, mark my words.

Get over yourselves.

Not "elitist".

"Realists" is far more appropriate.

Straight from Wiki:

Elitism is the belief or attitude that those individuals who are considered members of the elite — a select group of people with outstanding personal abilities, intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes — are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight; whose views and/or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom render them especially fit to govern

Using the above definition I would say that most posters at Housing Panic are "Elitists", or Elitist Wannabees.

Since we are throwing out the labels again, I would say that the above definition has absolutely nothing to do with Liberal vs. Conservative (really Ed), but the above "Elitist" definition does most definitely describe Housing Panic posters.

elitism (ĭ-lē-) [e•lit'ist adj. & n.] The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

Clearly, elitism is un-America. Not on wall-street - we the people don't bail out bankers. Not in DC - we the people give our politicians the same health care, retirement benefits and salary adjustments that we receive. Not in LA - we the people don't believe celebrities should be treated any differently than bus drivers and teachers. Not Sacramento - we the people give the moneyed special interest the same access to our lawmakers as any run-of-the-[textile]mill worker. Not in hospitals - we don't give bureaucratic insurance companies the right to decide issues of life and death. Not at our schools - we the tax-paying people don’t fund the students of the wealthiest families, who bought houses in the best neighborhoods, at a rate 6 times of that of students residing in “bad” neighborhoods. And certainly not in higher education - we the people believe in Harvard Business School and Stanford CS degrees for every one (especially foreigners)!

So everyone, hold tightly to your fear of change, lest we allow elitism to change Our American Values.

For me, this talk falls on deaf ears outside of this blog. So my husband and I just keep our opinions to ourselves.

Definitely not elitist. I dream of the day my fellow countrymen and women will awake from their apathetic, misinformed daze.

No elitism, only common sense at work, but I'm sure many of the flippers will try to spin it. Of course you have to trash the other side-beats having to admit you thought a 2 BR ranch with vinyl flooring was going to be worth a million bucks!

i'd have to say that this blog has a strong elitist, very snarky tone.

but that doesn't mean the people are wrong on what they say, or that the reports are fake.

gotta keep in mind that alot of people are feeling pain and stress from the housing bubble. Americans are getting hurt out there.

I sure see the big money falling all over themselves to get some government action. From the lobbiests to the bailouts, tax reform to energy policy, the upper classes have a full time interest in what the government is doing.
