Get Mulder & Scully on the case because the biggest fraudster, Tangizilo, just has to be an alien and thus this whole credit-mortgage/housing bubble-debacle just has to be part of a vast extra-terrestrial conspiracy. But yes, "surge" is what irks me the most, so, I started using the word myself!! like:
