Did HGTV's full slate of housing porn cause the housing bubble (and crash)?

This channel makes me sick.

HGTV ruined lives.

HGTV is to the REIC what Fox News is to the GOP

HGTV was the Fast Company or Wired of the housing mania.

HGTV is evil.

One of my wife's favorite shows is "Clean House." That's the reality show where this yard sale team goes into the typical American bling repository (i.e. the home,) dumps out 27 dump truck loads of junk, then restores 1-2 rooms to sane, livable, condition.

At least until the team leaves, anyway.

This show makes me want to puke. What is it with Americans and the desire to have EVERYTHING?

Whether they can use it or not, need it or not, or even WANT IT OR NOT, they gotta have it.

Un-f#ckin real!

No... I for one did not find it porn I thought it was funny and had comedic value for me.

One mans porn is another's sitcom.

American bling repository

That's funny! LOL!

Yeah, the show "My House is Worth What?" makes me crazy. Bought for $200,000 two years ago, $50,000 in improvements and bogus Realtor says he would list house TODAY for$795,000. The idiot hostess of the show then says: "With your profit of %545,000 you can now move to your dream home". What a joke. House is probably worth less than the $250,000 owner has in it.

"Clean Sweep" is ANTI-crap, not PRO-crap.

They're the good guys!

"Buy Me" kept it real. Sometimes the houses didn't sell. Delusional sellers were shown in their glory. Houses were shown in their dumpy glory. Perhaps because it was Canadian. Haven't seen it in a while though.

HGTV had shows while things were going up, fine.

Let's just see if they have shows about things going down.

(Next up on "Irish Lightning", meet the Jenkins, who are looking for a way out of their financial mess)

I actually enjoy Property Ladder. All the shows from 2007 actually show the flippers taking losses after not moving their homes, and the host is HOT!

Wait. Just wait a second. I thought Bush and Bernanke and Greenspan and Walmart and Fox News and Paulson and Countrywide and the NAR and Wall St caused the bubble.

Now it turns out the whole thing was caused TV channel that most people don't even know exists.

Go figure.

Cause? No...the bubble & crash were inevitable. Did it document the insanity, the hype, the grandiose & bellicose dreams & illusions? Yeppers.

Compare to "regular" porn: the Internet is just another medium; guys like to see porn, so porn will continue to exist. And the same, people here like to believe they can hit whatever lottery is in vogue today, so they'll keep watching.

When the next bubble hits, there'll be more shows/websites/etc. *That* is a safe bet...

If any channel is to blame then blame TLC. Mainly women watched it for the last 10 years during the daytime. Instead of living their own lives and doing things they became passive zombies watching other people have plastic surgery, go on dates, remodel homes, etc.

HGTV I have watched a total of under 15 minutes in my lifetime. This channel fills the mind with stupid ideas so you can fit in with the "cool" people.

The best channel on TV these days is CNBC. Watching these money for nothing SOBs be reduced to nothing is the greatest thing ever.

Clean House is on the Style Channel. At least they make people sell their junk to pay for fixing up their houses.

HGTV, TLC & A&E caused people to refinance for unneeded upgrades to kitchens & bathrooms and house flipping.

I would love to upgrade to stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, double bathroom sinks, Master Bedroom Suites, hardwood floors, open floor plans, kitchen islands, customs kitchen cabinets and custom built walk in closet organizers.

I almost contacted my bank for a HELOC until I heard Suze Orman tell a caller they were "denied" because they already have too much debt. I was laughing before I realized I had the same debt as the caller. My home is "dated" but everything works and is clean. I don't HAVE to do anything; I just WANTED what I saw on TV.

I'm glad I didn't and will just settle for a new coat and paint, rent a carpet steam cleaner and install a ClostMaid organizer myself.

If you have any no budget renovation/updating tips please e-mail to me @ i_luv_jamiroquai@yahoo.com

Ok - I admit I watch some trash TV. The "Millionaire Matchmaker" has male millionaires and tries to find them love (marriage) with hot women. One guy was total geek and lived with two other buddies in the freaking ghetto. The owner asked "Are you sure this guy is a millionaire?" after seeing his lifestyle and the response "yeah - we checked him out - he owns two $500,000 condos." Nobody made the connection.

In the "Millionaire Next Door" last night a panel was discussing the debt (almost $700,000) of two real estate flipper/agents who were going to get married. They lived the good life for YEARS – travel all over the world, limos, perfect teeth, $400 bottles of wine and now want a wedding (they have $20,000 cash in the bank for that) and really do not want to change their lifestyle. Oh yeah - they are $100,000 under water with their house and considering a "short sale." They guy said he is starting a great new business and needs cash for that (wonder how he would feel if someone stiffed him for $100,000 in that business). He considers himself an “entrepreneur” and was just an arrogant ass.

The world is still in denial.

I agree this is a form of self gratification, I gotta have it mentality. Worst offender to me is "Flip this House" on the other porn channel. That guy from SC is a real pimp and his whore sidekick who had no decorating talent. As a side note, can you imagine the amount of s#$t houses out there with cosmetic coverup that will quickly deteriorate due to "amature contractors", I think there will eventually be a market discount on all used houses that were flipped during 2003-2006. I sure as hell will check out a house's history before I consider a purchase.

You forgot A&E... Flip this House !!!! That is the worst.

( though now they have a disclaimer and show the "ACTUAL LOSS" )

Don't forget to mention TLC and their evil with "Flip this house" and "Flip that house"...I'll "flip" a few things...

Oh, and is it A&E who does the Property Ladder? I can't remember. Shame on all of them.

Oh, no, I think it's FUNNY... particularly last year's shows (add tile... cost $0.10...added value $3.95).

Can't WAIT for this year. Already starting to see it.

The best episodes will be the ones shot in the spring 2008 season.

I don't know how this channel continues to stay on the air with the ctap and lies they feed people. The worst show is My House Is Worth What? where they continue to show liar real estate agents throwing some fantasy figures to some idiot homeowners who must not have any clue as to what is going on in the housing market. This is the kind of crap to continues to make people feel they do not have to come down in price when selling a house.

Truly horeable (sic), the two worst; property virgins (the old skank getting young homeowners in over their heads)and the mother daughter butt ugly skank team foaming over the commission like rabid dogs.

I have to confess that I watch "Sell This House" on A&E because the hostess, Tanya Memme, is hot as hell:

The show gives reasonable advice, too. They only spend $500 max fixing up a house to make it more marketable. Not like those crazy shows where they gut the house. There's no way you could make money in this market doing that.

Don't forget who the host of that show is. None other than the infamous Kendra Todd.

I think one of the worst is My First Home. Almost everyone on the show gets 100% financing - even the ones that have a little bit of savings. They always show the people going shopping and getting the deliveries to the new house when they move in. One couple had tons of furniture delivered from Ethan Allen! Another couple's house was appraised less than the purchase price - they bought it anyways. Another episode the boyfriend bought the house his girlfriend wanted even though it was way over his price tag

If they gave warnings not to do stupid stuff that would be one thing but they make it sound like the people are making great decisions.

One last thing I don't get is why everyone now needs a home office and a dedicated guest room? I remember when the kids had to sleep in the living room when guests came over. Unless you have guests like once a week it is a totally wasted space. Also why do single people on all the shows constantly need 3 bedrooms/2 baths?

Nah...I'd miss some of these shows if they were gone.

I mean....Property Ladder has some great snark. The episode with the guy who insisted on installing a crapper where the neighbors could watch you take a dump was priceless!

You can make up some great drinking games for them, too. Take a swig if you hear the word "granite" or "stainless steel", take two for "double sink in the master bath" or "travertine", chug if the owner doesn't get a realtwhore's estimated value within 10k of their desired price, you get the picture.

There are few of these shows that will be helpful to people now -- like Designed to Sell (how to make your donkey of a home look like a racehorse so you can get out from under your killer mortgate), or Design on a Dime (how to decorate your house on less than $500, 'cause now you're stuck in it!).

On "My House is Worth What?" they could change the format, so that they have a grief counselor & forclosure specialist on call to help all the people that find out their home is worth $150K less than they put into it. Already, the host of that show has been working hard to hold back her snark, saying things like "the market was declining when you put in that kitchen, so maybe you'll get the money back in 'a few years'".
