HousingPANIC Stupid Question of the Day

Why do you care so much?

Wouldn't it be much easier to just watch American Idol, take out a toxic loan on a home you can't afford, spend too much, run up some credit card debts, and leave the problems of America to future generations?

Because this is exactly what my parents did to me in 1990-1991, and then made mistake after mistake in the 90s.

They never recovered from it, and it almost ruined my brothers and I. I vowed I would never make the same mistake, especially since I have children of my own now. And, my decisions as a result of this traumatic experience in the early 90s have turned out to be a terrific contrarian play.

All of my investments are doing exceptionally well while I sit back, rent, eat popcorn, and watch the slow-moving train wreck.

One day, I'm going to trade my little basket of commodities, for which I paid a pittance, into a big house.

I don't really care about the housing crash. I have trouble working up any moral outrage over it. It's more like entertainment to me. I love a good disaster, and this one is hilariously hopeless.

Reading about the crazy things FB's do is probably my favorite part. They're totally nuts. I love them.

I think you will find that most people who "care" about this have already *been here & done this before*.

Like Hubby & I did in the 80's Oil RE Crash in Texas.

Glad as hell I sold in D.C. in '06 & put it all in the Bank :)

Now prayn' the Bank doesn't go bad....shesh!

I'm not depressed about this....just kind of fascinated that it got this far, and I want to see how it all ends.

Besides, some of the nuttier things on this site really crack me up, especially the "troofers".

Brother trust me I have that thought every day. Max out the visa, buy the 120" LCD, lease the $800 a month BMW and be perpertually broke. Would be a lot easier than caring.

Although I do watch American Idol. Being financially prudent and enjoying mindless TV are not mutually exclusive.

I care because sellers are ‘offending’ me with offensive asking prices..
*
*
WTF…
I called an RE office about a property I found online, during the conversation I asked the agent ‘how firm is the asking price?’
He told me that I should give him an offer but not too low, because I do not want to ‘offend’ the seller.
Huh???
I almost fell out of my chair.
I see,… this agent is recommending that I possibly pay out an additional $200 a month for the next 30 YEARS, on the assumption that the seller has some serious self-esteem issues?

I care
I care
Until there is an open and free housing market.
Until the commie MLS system is gone
Until I can negotiate with the seller direct, without a greedy middle person who tries to steal (a fee/commission RE tax) from both sellers and buyers.

I care cause the REIC is hurting my pocket!!

The above comments are typical of today's American youth. Lamenting things could have been better had their parents not made "mistake after mistake".
Be careful! The best laid plans sometimes end up not working like you believe they will. There is this little thing called death, and it has a habit of coming upon you just when you think you have everything in the bag.
A guy lived with his mom into his 40s. He had 400K in the bank and was planning on living it up until six months before his intended early retirement he acquired a slight cough. It turned out to be terminal cancer and he was dead at 42 and he never had a chance to "enjoy" the fruits of his labor. You know why? He used to have a hobby at work. He kept a "death list". A list of losers in life which he predicted would die young. His fellow employees would gather round and laugh at his selections and the reasons why they were due to die.
Later, he discovered something. His list was incorrect. GOD PUT HIS NAME AT THE TOP OF THE LIST. As he lay dying in the hospital, he confessed to his co=workers who came to visit him that this was Gods judgement upon him for being so crass as to think he was going to survive those idiots who were living dangerous lifestyles off the job.
He had a brother. The brother led a wanton lifestyle and spent everything he ever earned and was totally messed up. Guess who inherited the 400K? Yes!
Kid, stop blaming your parents. They brought you into the world, they had the gall to challenge convention and raise the brat you are now. They could have lived better off financially if they did not raise children. Respect your parents for raising you. They are not to blame for financial mistakes and don't count on your "success" . You will discover that fact very soon.- One who knows.

I have always cared but I am going to stop. Ron Paul was the best hope. He has the answer, maybe a better candidate will pick up the torch and run with it, but it may be too late by then. I no longer have faith in the electoral process anyway. So I will buy a little house when prices decline further and try and be happy for a few.

"Why do we care so much?"

I believe the average HP'r is the type of person that likes their "i"'s dotted and their "t"'s crossed. I think many on blog are perfectionists at heart that work hard. And they get pissed if they see others that get rich not "working" (ie building equity in a house that is appreciating for no good reason).

This perfectionist streak is another reason why the average HP'r carries little to no debt on a credit card. And it is yet another reason Keith and so many others are angry with the average American. They are screwing up what should be a great country with less than perfect choices (ie huge credit card balances, poor choices in elected officals, HELOC's for a big TV, etc)

And yes I tend towards being a perfectionist, so in this description I describe myself.

PS Malcom, great post on Detroit yesterday, so true. I only hope Detroit is not the canary in the mineshaft. I fear it is...

Some great comments here. I agree with many of them. I have much fears about protecting my wealth right now (I am an insane, awesomely free saver), I have much hatred for the corrupt system. But I have optimism for the youth, I love a good train wreck as well (and America deserves it so badly), and in the meantime I'm trying to not let the horrors of the world drag me down. Enjoy this stupid ass life...what a f'in' comedy we are in. Payback...always a bitch!

"Because once you wake up, there is no going back to sleep, not anymore."

And it was a rude awakening.

I never wanted to be rich. My goal in life has always been to have everything I need and a few things I want, and I was quite comfortable with my modest middle-class achievements. I wanted to live my life, not spend most of it working my fingers to the bone to afford a bunch of meaningless material crap.

I lost my first (affordable) house and most of my money in a nasty divorce, and ended up starting over practically from scratch in my thirties. Sometime between then and now they changed the rules on me, and the career choice I had made -- which had always sustained a comfortable middle class lifestyle in the past -- was no longer sufficient to afford the mortgage on a middle class house without a drastic change in lifestyle. Hmm. Renter or mortgage slave, which should I choose?

Unless this market really crashes, I may never be able to afford a home again in the area where I desire to live. The people who are, are not really "affording" it either, but they chose the slave route because status is more important than quality of life. Or at least how I define quality of life.

While I'm quite comfortable with my decision to rent, because it really is the right one in this ridiculous market, I'm ticked off at the idiots that made it happen. It especially bothers me that my child will have to work twice as hard to achieve half as much as his parents.

In my area sales are slowing down slightly, but prices haven't dropped at all.

That is the worst part, because now you try to get others to "wake up," and they roll over, pull the pillow over their ears, and snuggle in! It's the old adage about "explaining Einstein’s Theory to a ant."

To be honest it doesn't make sense to worry too much about this because there's nothing you can do about it. We HPers can't change other people's behavior, and there are plenty of idiots who will march blissfully over the edge regardless of what we say. Keep yourself out of debt and other than that, sit back and watch the show.

I care because I tried it the other way. Ran up all the debt I could in anticipation of the nuclear armageddon that never did materialize. Took me years to pay all that off.

I care because I took the time to see how much of my money was being eaten by interest payments. Payments to people who had borrowed the money they lent to me. People who produce nothing.

I care because a flood of easy debt destroyed the monetary incentive for being a productive person. It also destroyed the dignity of labor. Working to become a doctor or engineer was meaningless as debt driven inflation destroyed your earnings.

I care because I am finally after six years of madness seeing the proof that becoming skilled and financially responsible was a GOOD move.

Ridiculous post. Open the blinds and look out the window if you dare... There is a nation of sad people BECAUSE they chose to 'have children' and then NOT RAISE those CHILDREN.

We ALL SUFFER the consequences of poor parenthood and neglected, uneducatade and classless youth. We are doomed to live with and amongsth these violent mutt mutated offspring. The ONLY good thing is we can eventually get TAX MONEY FROM THEM.

Read (if you can) a Newspaper (just because the President doesn't bother to read doesn't mean you should) for evidence.

How insulting to the many people who are childless BY CHOICE. Not everyone is cut out to be a parent, and not everyone needs children to have a fulfilling life.

It's only sad when someone is longing for a child and can't have one. And who the hell are you to assume that someone who can't have children -- as sad as that might be -- is "empty"?

Reminds me of the nimrods who have their self-worth so wrapped up in their debt-trap houses that that they can't fathom that someone else might not share their bogus conception of the "American Dream".

1. Dogs never ask for money.

2. They won't ask to drive the family car and will never get busted with their Schlitz-Malt Liquor drinkin' friends at 3am, careening down the highway.

3. They won't be spending their milk money on a dime bag of kick ass chronic.

4. AND, if they get knocked up, you can sell the results........

(Well, maybe not on that last one--Don't think we could bare to part with any of those little fur ball offspring and bust up the family...would have to keep em all....LOL!!

There is a shift in consciousness happening and we are just getting started. Everything we believed to be true we are finding now to be a lie, everything we thought this reality to be about is changing.

I see this happening regarding the college education scam. Articles are beginning to surface in the MSM about how the new generation's endless college debt burden will leave them with zero disposable income for 20 years and will subsequently crash our economy.

My friends who went to college and laughed at me after I quit during the first year are all kicking themselves now. I'm financially free (have been since I was 30, that's 5 years now), and while I'm free and enjoying an awesome life they're still paying off student loan debt while earning sh*t salaries and paying a crazy cost of living.

Now that the NAR/REIC/mortgage scam has been exposed I hope the college scam is exposed next.

What's sick is that Congress keeps upping the student loan & grant entitlements, which in turn keeps the universities raising tuition at a pace that FAR outpaces inflation. If the stupid politicians would just cut off the grants and guaranteed loans already, the colleges would have no choice but to cut tuition.

But no, the politicians are getting their kickbacks and that makes them increase the handout money instead of investigation the higher education system for price-gouging.

Anonymous said...

You sometimes hear that from people. But there's nothing more empty, more sad than a childless couple.

OK, I guess you have no idea that there CAN be ways to be very happy and fulfilled in life in ways other than having offspring. You'll see that in speaking to couples who have, with grace, accepted not wanting or not being able to have kids, and instead use their energy and talent to contribute wonderful things to their community that otherwise would not have been done... and it turns out in part because they didn't have to worry instead about buying 'Webkidz World' garbage or cell phones for 8 year olds.

Also, I guess your kids haven't gotten into a whole lot of serious trouble for you to make such a blanket statement. My pal had a 14 year old who was involved with drugs for 18 months before he found out - and he's no dead beat parent, by any means. 3 years later the kid is on his fourth rehab center, presently costing Dad $80 grand per school year (yes, that's $80,000), not covered by insurance. He is broke, his retirement fund is ruined, and his marriage is strained. He begged for us to consider NOT having a kid, 'it wasn't worth it'. It haunts me to this day.

One other thought - the world over population issue doesn't help the environmental crisis that is rapidly becoming worse.

Yes, kids can be great, but please keep a more open mind.

I just hate people thought I was a nut job 2 years ago and now what I was saying then they are talking about now. The second thing I talked about was the price of food and to buy gold once again I sounded like I should have been committed but the prices have shot up in weeks and so far they aren't complaining but they will. I learned alot from reading these blogs because they keep me one step ahead of what is coming down the pike so I won't be trying to figure out what the hell happened I already know. When you step back and look at it, it is like a cancer.

I care because we have an idiotic economic policy that is hell-bent on mindless, self-perpetuating production and consumption. We build over the best farmland in the world to build more worless crap shacks. We continue to feed dollars to the communist-industrialist slave masters in China, instead of preserving our national tradition of craftsmen, artists and farmers. We have ripped the spine from America's cultural heritage. Those centuries of knowledge are gone. We have gone from a society of shopowners, to shop watchers; citizens, to consumers.

We have colonized ourselves: raw goods go out (grain, timber, minerals, etc.) and worthless, indulgent consumer good come back in (frozen, individually wrapped PB&J with the crusts cut off--WTF!) then the money that we pay "them" goes straight out of town to XCorp's headquarter (via Bermuda tax shelter, of course.) And Betty Sue the 35 year old working-poor checkout girl/single mother-of-two gets her $7/ hour cut (probably spends 30% of it in the store and 30% on daycare.)

We have destroyed the America way of life because a faceless army of Suzanne's have told us that "we can do this." I'm not even sure what "this" is supposed to be or why we without fail do things that we "can" instead of what we know we should.

I care because I want all this to stop, I want a return to a responsible society and I hope that the housing bubble can make a big enough ripple to stop it.

Before you give up cable, demand
an educational package, with news, science, history, Animal Planet, all three CSPANS, etc.; without the crap like MTV.

Also request learning-on-demand
services. Adults learning real
skills and information at home
is the only timely way to turn
the tide.
Better schools take too long.

Trust me when I tell you that YOU will NOT care who (race) is lending you a helping hand in a natural disaster or crisis in general!

And God will specifically send the one race that you hate so much to help you!

Great content! Well said. Thank you for recognizing where the problems lie.

It's because of selfish and divisive thinking that problems exist around the World!

Race ~ Class ~ Religion ~ Power
