Did you go see it? If so, lucky bastard.

Awesome. I saw Robert Plant live in 1989 in Detroit. Allanah Miles (one hit wonder: Black Velvet) opened for him; they were rumored to have been dating. I'm from the generation that would have appreciated playing Stairway to Heaven at my wedding, but my wife would not allow it...lofl.

Was one of the million who tried to get tickets and failed

But still, that's pretty cool sh*t

Some things come around once in a lifetime. Great depressions. Led Zep reunions. The NAR being honest (ok, that hasn't happened yet but we'll see)

A mostly overrated band IMO. The wheelchair reunion tour doesn't surprise me at all.

I really wish I'd made it to Live-Aid in Philly back in '85 but my parents wouldn't let me travel with a pack of what they called, Wolverines (a.k.a bad boy/young adults).

Oh well... I had to watch Zep on the tube for the historic reunion when they were still young.

Who's Led Zeplin? Guitarist looks like my great grandpa!

Well, there's one good thing that's going to come of all this - the end of Hollywood, actors, musicians, entertainment. Thank God...

Damn, Jimmy dragged out the old twin-neck. Thank doG for the distributed ROIO community.

Wow 60 year old men acting like they are 20 again. Ridiculous and pathetic.

Thank you Keith, I have never been able to see em live as I have always lived far below the poverty level. I'm kinda proud of that! But I have to say that I love it when the more fortunate share with the less fortunate. Thanks so much for the "taste of Led"

I swear the younger generation has no clue what real music is... that is why they keep re-making old classics in every genre!

well how interesting that these old satanist have come back to life at this time in history. perhaps it is about the time for the new world that they want. and perhaps they wish to be on the stage again as in the days of old, as this new world is ushered in. how fitting. but alas. they grow old. and soon. soon they shall meet their father and in that day there shall be wailing and nashing of teeth. then in the twinkling of the eye, their eternal souls shall realize it was all a lie. and so for a eternity they shall burn in hell. so be it.

i say all of this because most of the music of the 60's was satanically derived. heck, i listened to it as well as did many in my generation. but i never let it consume me. how different perhaps would it have been if all of us had listened to music derived from the masters. instead. we listened to this kind of crap, which caused hearing loss and a dumbed down generation. and let it be known right here and now, this was by no accident, i assure you. dumbed down baby boomers produce even dumber children. dumbed down people are easier to control. the baby boomers came to be a selfish, self absorbed narcsistic generation who produced children who do not know right from wrong. so now, can we look now at what the children of today listen to? oh they listen to hip hop and rap. i rest my case.

wow I never noticed those lyrics...

Damn that was awesome!

I saw Page/Plant in 95, it was a great show, and I had great tickets

A bit different, but I saw Van Halen with David Lee Roth a few weeks ago, and that was great too!

Saw Poison and Ratt this past summer, not the're anywhere near Led Zep or even VH, but still a fun time

Now back to the debt trap/housing crash!

Zepp is cool and all, but they haven't been relevant in over 30 years..sorry!

I hear that. I almost tried to get Van Halen tickets but then I thought better. Seeing them now would wreck my memories seeing them when I was 15 during the women and children first tour. Friend had just turned 16 and had his drivers license. Skipped school and waited in line all day (general admission seating for $10 per ticket).

DAMN RIGHT THAT'S COOL...THANKS KEITH~

As I looked to the west, down the road, there was a For Sale sign on the wall of a house along a hedge row. That house was on the high side of the street and had too many stairs. And the price. It really makes you wonder.

Now we know what that song was about!

The "lady" buying that rancher with too many stairs is a deluded flipper.
The "May Queen" was Suzanne, hoping for a Spring "clean" (uptick in sales).
The "piper" who will "lead us to reason" is Keith.
Even though the "stores" will soon "be all closed", a "new day will dawn" for HPers, who are "those who stand long".

I am 28yo.

Led Zeppelin is one of the top 3 bands of all time.

OF ALL TIME.

their music is genius and timeless.

i will be going to see them.

Sorry to classic rock fans out there but there's a stark difference between 'Houses of the Holy', their fifth, and everything else since then till '82.

I mean really, 'Presence' sans "Achilles Last Stand", wasn't even an above average album and the radio overplay killed "Fool In The Rain" from 'In Through The Out Door' which made even that John Paul Jones keyboard album into a snooze-a-thon. And most people don't even recognize their swan song album (no pun intended), 'Coda'.

Now, if we're talking strictly Zeppelins I, II, III, IV, and Houses, then we're looking at a truely unique phenomena from '68 till about '74. That's when they were the masters of the hard rocking/blues empire. And yes, that run was greater than pre-Load Metallica, Sabbath/Ozzy, and Deep Purple.

Anonymous said...

Funny? I've always considered "Stairway" a "chick song"? For me anyway the real hey-day was Page's connection to the Yardbirds and the whole "white boy blues movement".

Alvin Lee, Kim Simmunds and the like. It was about the blues, it was about the electric guitar. I can't think of one girl in my HS that *didn't have a crush on Robert Plant? And he SANG like a chick.

I realize this will blow right over a lot of people's heads but for those of us in bands at the time not having a guy that could sing like RP meant you didn't have a singer! Period.

Since most guys can't come close to hitting those higher notes it opened the door for chick singers and chick bands. In the end, the growling, coarse singers that started it all were brushed aside for Heart and "big hair" bands.

The Blues Guitar (and the Gods that made it come alive) lay in waste. Well, we still have plenty of chick bands but blues guitar is "Alive and Well" as newer generations of musicians discover the fire, fury and fun of simply playing the instrument, and playing it well.

Thanks for posting this, it made my day.
I started playing this at work this morning and two other guys in my office came over to see what I was doing. Three thirtysomething geeks sitting in a cubicle rocking to Led Zeppelin at 9:00 am. It put all of us in a good mood and we were able to return to our soul-sucking jobs with a renewed spirit.

God I miss rock music. What they play on the rock stations today is shite. I wouldn't care if Jimmy Page was 160, he's still got it and most of the morons who call themselves musicians today couldn't touch him even when he was coked up and wasted on Jack. Robert Plant can still hit those high notes. Sweet!

Maybe if rock music was still as rebellious as it once was, more people in this country would be fighting back against the establishment instead of rolling over and letting wankers like Bush, Cheney, Greenspan, and Bernanke drive the nation in to the ground.

Thank you. Zepelin sure as hell is satanic. They were/are big fans of "The Beast" Aleister Crowley.

You wonder why the baby boomer generation would allow their economy to be ruined, even cheering on this 4 decades long destruction? Look no further than the 1960's introduction of the "sex, rock, drug" counter culture.

You had the assassination of President Kennedy and the Beatles showed up 9 weeks later; the rest is history. It's taken four decades but they managed to destroy the greatest industrial power in all human history.

i love Led Zep, but the bits of the reunion that i have seen were mediocre... can't do songs in thier original key because Plant can't hit the notes, and even then he has very little range left. it wasn't *bad* (in the past both Page and Plant could be truly awful, especially Page) but it wasn't very impressive either, aside from them being senior citizens. thought Page's guitar playing was cleaner than usual, as if he had spent a good bit of time practicing.

i felt the same way about the Cream reunion last year - great and all, but they had none of the fire that was there 40 years ago. and EC played his fucking Strat through a Bassman. big deal, where are the old plexi-faced Marshalls and the Gibson SG/Firebird/335? if you're up there to collect a check, please, at least don't be boring.

getting back to LZ, if you want to see the real live Led Zeppelin, go watch "The Song Remains The Same" or some of the video from '68-'73 on YouTube.

Been listening to XM radio over my computer. They got a dedicated Led Zeppelin channel. Nice.

Funny and true story:

When I was a kid, I used to live in my 37' ft sailboat at the Marina City Club Condominiums, in Marina del Rey, CA. Since my boat slip was right behind the famous Red Onion bar/restaurant/nightclub, I was there every Tuesday for its happy hour/Karaoke night.

One of those nights, I sat down at a friend's table, a guy who was manager for a major car dealer in the area. He had brought along a co-worker, a stocky and chubby Mexican guy, very funny individual.

So after several rounds of all you can drink $1 cocktails, and a bunch of horrible drunk singers hitting the stage, this Mexican guy puts his name on the list to perform next.

Needless to say that we all started laughing and begged him to not embarrass us because of all the flirting girls around. Well, this Mexican guy wasn't done yet and the music he picked for his Karaoke performance? "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin. Man, when we saw that we said to him, "No freaking way, you're not making an arse of us in front of all these girls!!!" He just laughed and continued drinking.

Minutes later the host calls his name on stage, so he gets up, walks to it and grabs the microphone, while the music started.

The entire bar couldn't believe it. This Mexican guy made one of the best Robert Plant impersonations I've ever seen in my life! His voice was perfect, and not only that, he was throwing the microphone up and down, getting on his knees, dancing all over the place...it was un-freaking-believable!

To make a long story short, he received a standing ovation, including by us, and many patrons even sent free drinks to our table. It was a fun night. Only in LA.

I'd fly to UK for a Rockpile reunion. Had tix for Dave Edmunds years ago, but he cancelled. Seen Nick Lowe many times--- Basher rules!

I don't think it's pathetic that they still sound great at their ages. Now the STONES, they're pathetic because they've stayed together 30 years past their last decent record. But Led Zeppelin broke up when Bonham died (he was only 32! His son who replaced him Monday was 14 when his dad died, is 41 now!), which was the right thing to do (REM should have taken the hint, they've never been good since their drummer left). They've moved on to other things, but they can't help it if they will always be best known for being in such a very huge band, and the 16 songs they did Monday night are truly classic rock songs they OWN. As a 48-year-old who still listens to a lot of NEW music, I think this is harmless and even cool. And I must say Bruce Springsteen is 58 and has just made his best rock album in 23 years.

Well it consumed me and my friends, so we will all gather around your house next Saturday and slowly converge on it, murmering braaaaaainns.....braAAAAAINS.

I'm guessing we'll leave empty handed. Might come away with a couple Chick tracts, though.

I didn't think about that... that is soooo true! A classic will ALWAYS be a classic.

It is an original and something, someone or a group to always be respected and appreciated. Well that is simply my opinion.

Anonymous said...

That sounded pretty good in my estimate. Was that John Paul Jones on the keyboard?

I wonder if Page & Plant are running low on cash to get the money machine cranking. Expect the DVD, CD special etc to come rolling in next. It's about the money at the end of the day, right?

Maybe this would fit in better on the thread 'When do you expect to retire?' By my calcuation Page is now 63 (born in 1944 I think) and he's working at least part time.

Nevertheless I was enriched by all their music. It's what motivated me to pick up the bass guitar and move to many other string instruments 16 years ago at the age of 18...
