Expect the DVD, CD special etc to come rolling in next. It's about the money at the end of the day, right?

Maybe this would fit in better on the thread 'When do you expect to retire?' By my calcuation Page is now 63 (born in 1944 I think) and he's working at least part time.

Nevertheless I was enriched by all their music. Now the STONES, they're pathetic because they've stayed together 30 years past their last decent record. But Led Zeppelin broke up when Bonham died (he was only 32! His son who replaced him Monday was 14 when his dad died, is 41 now!), which was the right thing to do (REM should have taken the hint, they've never been good since their drummer left). They've moved on to other things, but they can't help it if they will always be best known for being in such a very huge band, and the 16 songs they did Monday night are truly classic rock songs they OWN. As a 48-year-old who still listens to a lot of NEW music, I think this is harmless and even cool. And I must say Bruce Springsteen is 58 and has just made his best rock album in 23 years.Debhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03892997111551835451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18675105.post-89727324427017967172007-12-12T21:23:00.000+00:002007-12-12T21:23:00.000+00:00I'd fly to UK for a Rockpile reunion. Since my boat slip was right behind the famous Red Onion bar/restaurant/nightclub, I was there every Tuesday for its happy hour/Karaoke night.

One of those nights, I sat down at a friend's table, a guy who was manager for a major car dealer in the area. He had brought along a co-worker, a stocky and chubby Mexican guy, very funny individual.

So after several rounds of all you can drink $1 cocktails, and a bunch of horrible drunk singers hitting the stage, this Mexican guy puts his name on the list to perform next.

Needless to say that we all started laughing and begged him to not embarrass us because of all the flirting girls around. Well, this Mexican guy wasn't done yet and the music he picked for his Karaoke performance? "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin. Man, when we saw that we said to him, "No freaking way, you're not making an arse of us in front of all these girls!!!" He just laughed and continued drinking.

Minutes later the host calls his name on stage, so he gets up, walks to it and grabs the microphone, while the music started.

The entire bar couldn't believe it. This Mexican guy made one of the best Robert Plant impersonations I've ever seen in my life! His voice was perfect, and not only that, he was throwing the microphone up and down, getting on his knees, dancing all over the place...it was un-freaking-believable!

To make a long story short, he received a standing ovation, including by us, and many patrons even sent free drinks to our table. It was a fun night. Three thirtysomething geeks sitting in a cubicle rocking to Led Zeppelin at 9:00 am. It put all of us in a good mood and we were able to return to our soul-sucking jobs with a renewed spirit.

God I miss rock music. What they play on the rock stations today is shite. I wouldn't care if Jimmy Page was 160, he's still got it and most of the morons who call themselves musicians today couldn't touch him even when he was coked up and wasted on Jack. Robert Plant can still hit those high notes. For me anyway the real hey-day was Page's connection to the Yardbirds and the whole "white boy blues movement".

Alvin Lee, Kim Simmunds and the like. It was about the blues, it was about the electric guitar. I can't think of one girl in my HS that *didn't have a crush on Robert Plant? And he SANG like a chick.

I realize this will blow right over a lot of people's heads but for those of us in bands at the time not having a guy that could sing like RP meant you didn't have a singer! Period.

Since most guys can't come close to hitting those higher notes it opened the door for chick singers and chick bands. In the end, the growling, coarse singers that started it all were brushed aside for Heart and "big hair" bands.

The Blues Guitar (and the Gods that made it come alive) lay in waste. Well, we still have plenty of chick bands but blues guitar is "Alive and Well" as newer generations of musicians discover the fire, fury and fun of simply playing the instrument, and playing it well.

DinORAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18675105.post-38110141117538256422007-12-12T14:10:00.000+00:002007-12-12T14:10:00.000+00:00Sorry to classic rock fans out there but there's a...Sorry to classic rock fans out there but there's a stark difference between 'Houses of the Holy', their fifth, and everything else since then till '82.

I mean really, 'Presence' sans "Achilles Last Stand", wasn't even an above average album and the radio overplay killed "Fool In The Rain" from 'In Through The Out Door' which made even that John Paul Jones keyboard album into a snooze-a-thon. And most people don't even recognize their swan song album (no pun intended), 'Coda'.

Now, if we're talking strictly Zeppelins I, II, III, IV, and Houses, then we're looking at a truely unique phenomena from '68 till about '74. That's when they were the masters of the hard rocking/blues empire.
