My neighbors are stipulating that any and all contractors (lawn, whatever) have no Mexican employees, at least none on the premises. Course I could never afford any help - circumstances forced me to be the ultimate D-I-Y er. But it's a good start, and they're willing to try my approach if the contractors are unable to comply.

Let's stop with the smoke and mirrors arguments. Nobody is against immigrants they are against ILLEGAL REPEAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. It's not that difficult to get the difference, really. Why should people who break the laws of this country get to cut in line in front of people who waited and went through legal channels (i.e. got visas, sponsorships, etc). If big business needs 1,000,000 fruit pickers, let's do the same thing that IT companies did in the 90's. They lobbied for more H1B visas and any indians programmers who wanted to come here did so by following the rules and getting their visas. Same thing applies to fruit pickers. Level the playing field instead of giving preferential treatment to Mexicans, let's issues 1,000,000 manual laborer visas and distribute them equally between Asia, Middle East, Africa, South America, so that poor people from all over the world get the same opportunities that Mexicans ILLEGALY sieze by crossing into a souvereign nation without appropriate visas.

Holy cow! Who knew those guys across the street putting a new roof on my neighbor's house were the "cream of the crop". I guess I should take my kids over to watch them so that they can learn from the best. That way I won't have to spend a fortune on a college education. Maybe one of them will invent something as miraculous as the Bowflex.
The ILLEGAL immigrants are not a boon to the US economy. They are depressing wages at the lower end of the pay scale. In the construction industry, even a decade ago, skilled carpenters and masons made $15-$25 per hour. Now they are told that they will be paid $7 per hour because that is what the illegals will take.
They take the money they earn and send it back to Mexico or Honduras or where ever. They do not spend it here. But they are more than happy to sponge off the services the rest of us have paid for. They don't pay taxes or social security but they get free healthcare, food, educations, etc. How is it good for the economy when 11-20 million people are taking money from a system that they do not contribute to? For the record, I have noooo problem with immigrants. I have a HUGE problem with ILLEGAL immigrants. Especially when they are about to be given a free pass for breaking the law.
Let's say a woman has cancer and can't pay for her treatment. Her husband robs a bank to pay for her medical care. Do we send him to jail for breaking the law even though we sympathize with his reasons or do we give him a free pass? Of course, he goes to jail. No matter how sad his story is, he still broke the law.
Too bad that so many Americans are pre-occupied with their interest only loans and Hummer payments. Perhaps we could punish the illegal’s at the root of the problem: Mexico! We could start by not vacationing there or not buying anything made there. Mexico is backing this crap, so I say lets punish them where it hurts. We also need to take a stand on those so-called American Companies that hire illegal’s by not buying their crap products; Tyson Foods would be a good place to start.

I have a different take on the guest worker program that I haven't seen anyone else get into...say you're currently an illegal immigrant working a low-skilled job. Now, what is your incentive to participate in a guest worker program? You've already got a job. You know you're not getting deported--everyone from the President on down has basically said so. So why should you step forward, identify yourself to the authorities, pay a fine, etc? If you don't have skills or a degree, it's not going to get you a better job. Your children are already citizens by law. So I bet the vast majority of illegal immigrants will shrug their shoulders and keep doing what they're doing. And even if half of them participate, that still leaves a population of 5-6 million who are illegal. And, businesses will still prefer to take on undocumented workers becuase they are cheaper and have no leverage.

I'm heading out for the rally now. Si Se Puede! I'm a white dude who employs no illegals, I'm certain I pay higher taxes and insurance costs because of their presence, but still I will protest for their rights. Amnesty for all, let them be US citizens.
Let me bring a side of economics into this. Being rich and being poor are relative terms. You're only rich when you have more money compared to the poor. These illegals are actually making you richer since you can get the work done at a much lower cost. The average wages for Americans have actually increased because of them. So, there is some benefit to having it the way things have been for so long. However, since everyone is so interested in punishing the illegals, let's look at things that will automatically reduce illegal inflow.
1. Eliminate government healthcare and education for illegals. Make it more expensive for them to stay. Let's see what they do when they have to pay for their healthcare and education.
2. Impose penalties on employers who hire them. Come on they wouldn't be here if they're not able to find work. USA has one of the highest cost of living. They need money to survive here. Next time you go to eat at a fancy restaurant ask the Manager if the food was prepared by an illegal or ask your Condo/Co-op to only hire Americans to take out the trash.
3. Increase legal immigration numbers so that they can come in legally. Do you know what's the wait period for let's say a mexican to get an immigrant visa? It's anywhere from 5 years for skill-based to 13 years for family-based. That's because USA only allows about 1 million immigrants per year which is divided equally between all countries. But the demand to migrate is far greater in some countries compared to others. What would you do if you were in their shoes? Wait for 13 years or sneak in through the border and get a job, free healthcare & education?
4. Create a border, enforce laws that protect the border and yes, deport law-breakers.
5. And last but not the least, ask your Senators and Representatives to increase the minimum-wage. It seems Republicans are the first to trash any bill that increase minimum wages. (Walmart link here?). I'm an independent, so I really don't care if you start trashing Dems because of this sentence.
All these things are tied and if you believe you can have one thing without the other you are grossly mistaken and you are being reined in by hate-radio rhetoric so that they can pull in the listeners and make money off the ads. Have you noticed how talk-radio hosts also do their own ads. What's up with that? It reminds you that they're only doing business.

Just came back from observing the illegal immigrant rally in downtown Phoenix...UNBELIEVABLE!...news reports put attendance at over 200K, the largest gathering in Arizona state history.
My take away: give another 2 election cycles or so, and Arizona goes into the Democratic/blue state column.
At this rate the West/Southwest will eventually be the Democratic partys' counterweight to the Republican Solid South. Look for a long-term Anglo "circle the wagons" migration to Utah and Idaho. How's the real estate market there?

I think we should build a wall across the Mexican and Canadian borders to keep out the illegals from entering. However, we should make the enforcement of illegal entry into this nation retroactive to 1492 and kick out all of the decendants of those who entered this country illegally since then. Every month I pay for illegal immigrants in Florida just by looking at my car insurance bill. It doubled from my previous state of residence and when I asked the agent why, he simply said "Mexicans".
If you could see my car insurance bill you would be astounded. But then again why have insurance when you have no assets and are driving around a 1991 Ford Explorer with 4 bald tires, stolen license plates, and crammed full of 10 kids?

i am an immigrant myself, it took my family about 12 years to get the visa. i feel cheated by the legal system bez two of my siblings couldn't come because they were adult by the time our turn came up. I know our immigration case was filed before the last amensty. if the us gov is going to keep giving visa to illegals and let them work also i don't know why anybody would wann come here legeally.
