Silicon Valley venture capitalist Ron Conway sent a sobering e-mail on Tuesday to the 130 start-up companies he's invested in: now is the time to hunker down.

"In 2000 and 2001, the companies that hunkered the fastest were the companies that survived," said Conway in an interview with CNET News. "Get costs under control; make sure you have plenty of runway."

And angel investor Ron Conway emailed a warning to his portfolio companies explaining that raising capital will now be much more difficult, reports TechCrunch (who posted the emails in their entirety).

Unlike the turmoil of 2000 when the 'action' was centered right here in Silicon Valley this time is it centered on Wall Street…..but it has rippled to the west coast quickly and we will not be 'immune' to its drastic effects,” Conway writes.

I have a book called The Great Depression by David A. Shannon that contains news paper articles and other memo from that era.

Public statements at the New Year on the business outlook for 1930 damaged more reputations of forecasters than they bolstered. In the midst of the stock market debacle two months earlier, prominent persons whose words was apt to be taken -- bankers, industrialists, economist, government officials --had declared their confidence in stocks, not to mention underlying business soundness. At the beginning of the year more perspective might be looked for. The optimism expressed, however, was hardly representative, for most of those with serious misgivings about the future did not offer their opinions or find them published. Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Mellon committed himself blithely: "I see nothing in the present situation that is either menacing or warrants pessimism....I have ever confidence that there will be a revival of activity in the spring and that during the coming year the country will make steady progress."
The White House reported the President as considering "that business could look forward to the coming year with greater assurance." Willis H. Booth, president of the Merchants' Association of New York, saw "no fundamental reason why business should not find itself again on the upgrade early in 1930

The First Impact of the Depression of the 'thirties did not affect the wages structure. It cut the earnings of millions through unemployment and part-time work before it affected wage rates. It was not until the last quarter of 1930 that appreciable downward changes in manufacturing wages occurred. The drop was about one cent an hour from the 1929 average of 59 cents an hour.
The next year, 1931 saw a slow but progressive decline in hourly earnings, which dropped about three cents before the end of the year. Weekly earnings, on account of unemployment, dropped much faster.
In 1921 wage cuts were advocated early in the depression to liquidate labor costs. In 1930-31 they were opposed both by the government and by leading employers, in the hope that the maintenance of wage earners' income would furnish a market for products and help business recovery.

This from the New York Times June, 5, 1932
Darwin's theory that man can adapt himself to almost any new environment is being illustrated, in this day of economic change, by thousands of New Yorkers who have dicovered new ways to live and new ways to earn a living since their formerly placid lives were thrown into chaos by unemployment or kindred exigencies. Occupations and duties which once were scorned have suddenly attained unprecedented popularity. Two years ago citizens shied at jury duty. John Doe and Richard Roe, summoned to serve on a jury, thought of all sorts of excuses....They called upon their ward leaders and their lawyers for aid in getting exemption, and when their efforts were rewarded they sighed with relief. But now things are different.
The Hall of Jurors in Criminal courts Building is jammed and packed on court day. Absences of tales men are infrequent. Why Jurors get 4. for every day they serve...
Shinning shoes, said one is more profitable than selling apples -- and he ried them both.
"You see, when you get a shine kit it's a permanent investment," he sain, "and it doesn't cost as much as a box of apples anyway..."
According to the Police Dept., there are approximately 7,000 of these "shine boys" making a living on New York streets at present. Three years ago they were so rare as to be almost non-existent, and were almost entirely boys under 17.

I predict that Americans will be come more creative in the next few years...Their pass time will be REINVENTING THEMSELVES.

The sad thing is most of society is "dopes". I have been proselytizing the crash message for a year and a half. And I do mean proselytizing: strangers in airport lounges, people at bars etc. I was the ultimate bore!
I have visited around ten countries in this time frame and spoken to a huge array of people. To my knowledge two people took me seriously. These two peoples capital position is over $400k better than if they had stayed invested where they were.
I feel frustrated I couldn't have done more.

okay i am a dope, remember that house that was 800,000 is now 450,000 and we can probably afford it now. but the papers said that the bottom has a long way to go. but that house may never be on the market again let's go for it. honey the house down the street just went on the market for 350,000 we are down 100,000. damn maybe i should have listened to what the EXPERTS were saying we are screwed.

or we can afford that hummer now the prices are down 10,000, but honey the gas is 4.50 a gallon that doesn't make sense. but the hummer is down 10,000 we will be able to get a show off car we don't have a problem with this economy we can afford a hummer. 3 months later honey the price of food is really spinning out of control but we have to make these hummer payments it would be nice to have a little extra for some hamburger meat for our hamburger helper.

or all my technology is really old i am going to update everything, phone, ipod, computer, game consoles. but honey it that a necesary expense. don't worry dear it will all turn around the government won't let us go down like that. on the tv in the background "american people if we do not support this 700 billion bailout the market is going to crash and the way of life as you know it will be over"

nope, people don't won't and can't believe it has come to this. as long as the house people have been wishing they could afford is now by half they think it's a good deal. never mind they were told this mess is not over and housing prices are still going to have to go down. they don't believe there is a crash. they can't believe their elected officials can't wave a money wand and fix this mess. and then you have the other end of the spectrum, don't raise my taxes to pay for my excesses over that past 5 years, that ain't never gonna happen. i want it but i damn sure don't feel like i should have to pay for it.

The problem with GREED is not it makes people blind.

Recent there has been a slight increase in home sales in the past three months, but most fail to see that as job lost increase rent will decrease.

Many first time and some lucky long time real estate investors are jumping into the housing market to soon buying up cheap homes in bad location using existing rental price to support their payment, but investors will find that as existing rental price will fall so will their investment.

Credit crunch hits Bay Area housing market hard

"The first step toward recovery is stabilization - prices have to stop declining," said Mark Zandi, chief economist and co-founder of Moody's Economy.com. "That probably won't be until next summer. In terms of actual recovery and price growth, I don't think that will be until the fall or end of 2010."

The Bay Area up until now had skirted a recession, said Ken Rosen, chairman of the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics at UC Berkeley. But as Wall Street's troubles have made the national recession worse, it's likely that the Bay Area's economy also has slipped into a recession, bad news for the already troubled housing market, Rosen said.

"It means there is less security of employment and when that happens, fewer people are willing to go out and buy things," he said. "People are going to be more cautious about buying a house if they're afraid of losing their jobs."

Zandi agreed. "The panic of the last several weeks is going to hit the housing market hard because it's going to hit jobs hard," he said. "We're going to lose a lot of jobs, and that's just one more weight on the already-crashing housing market."

It's a new paradigm, and everybody who doesn't buy, now, will be priced out forever. Anybody who does buy will be rewarded with a lifetime of riches, as their property will continue its 30% yearly price increase.

Renters, and anybody born in a future generation, will not be able to afford a £15,000,000 starter home in 15 years. They will live in tent cities, and Hondas.

This asset bubble is different than all of the others - it will never slow down, or pop. The gains are permanent.

-Not DOPES, but a classic! That last line gets me everytime. "The Gains Are PERMANENT, DOPES!"

Singapore slips into recession

Singapore on Friday joined other Asian nations in easing monetary policy as the economy slipped into recession for the first time since 2002.

The economy contracted by 0.5 per cent in the third quarter from a year ago, based on preliminary data. The trade ministry cut its full-year growth forecast for 2008 to 3 per cent from a previous estimate of 4-5 per cent.
