Is America now just one big Ponzi Scheme and confidence game?

And assuming the answer is yes, is there any way out of this mess?

the confidence men (and women) are definitely running a lot of scams under the guise of governance. So I'll say yes. That said, a country run by con artists for long enough is a country in peril.I don't know how the collective will to create a better society will come about, but it needs to emerge, or any short term 'recovery' will just be remission from a violent and lethal disease.

Yes. No.

Not until the fattened pigs are led to slaughter. Americans care little about facts and this has been the plan all along. The United States of America was a concept, but greed from all corners of the globe have descended upon it for one last meal while the guardians of democracy were eating fast food and watching Dancing With the Stars. If you misbehave in the coming weeks they will break out the Active Denial System and disperse the bothersome masses.

Yes, there is a way out, but it won't be taken. It would involve cutting spending all over the place, most explicitly including medicare. That would piss off all the senior citizens that can't really comprehend that the alternative is hyperinflation.

We clearly have a president AND presidential candidates that are cowards, and all but a handful of congressmen are cowards as well.

That's a damned good question. There are plenty of people that I talk to that say let it all fall down... They are not rich, they are struggling and they think they have almost nothing to lose. And they are very very angry about all this. They feel gypped, scammed, made fools of, taken advantage of ... They feel like slaves. Things have just gotten worse for them. They feel like there is no opportunity. They are not sure what is going on and they are working too hard to find out. Some are working 3 jobs. (Many employers only employ part time so that they don't have to pay any benefits.)And then there are others who do have savings, etc., but they are also wondering what the heck is going on.
With the markets for instance.
I do think that confidence in the "system", the govmnt, the media and the economy is gone accross the board.
Maybe it is a good thing.

The only way out of this mess is to raid and take over the NAR.

Their house is burning down, but they're talking about how great the appliances are:

I think the answer is that people have to become involved in politics and watch both sides. People calling up and saying your history ,or you will be exposed if you vote for a bad bill is effective . I noticed a couple of talking heads on TV were actually getting behind encouraging people to call their representatives.

Wall Street took a objectionable idea,(bailing out the rich evildoers ), and they tried to crammed it down the people throats by fear and
incorrect facts . The fact that no other plan was considered ,or no other debate or options were allowed was wrong .I don't have any faith in Paulson and the Fed Chairman .

I hope the bill is defeated and they go back to the drawing board .
Like I posted a long time ago that
the Feds have the ability to inject cash into the system ,while they hash out a good bill .

They have nothing in the Bill that will force banks to be loose with
the lending . I think the Fed Chairman is kidding himself and Paulson ,well he has hidden motives if you ask me .

Kick out the corrupt Politicians because that's the only power you have over them over the lobbyist .

These days the advertisers own the media ,and they own the Politicians also . Getting any kind of objective news is almost impossible ,they all got the same talking points .Just like during the housing boom ,every source of
public influence was rah rah housing boom .

Its pretty clear who has been setting the trends and even foreign policy in American these days and we are seeing that same group in action with this current BILL .The new way to gain power is to brainwash America ,and cut off any counter views .While it was clear in 2004 that the housing lending had gone into a speculative market ,still the powers kept it going against all logic all the way to mid 2007 . Paulson doesn't think meaningful reform and regulation and law enforcement should be a current topic of conservation .If you buy that than you believe in not making a determination of the causes of this mess and coming up with real solutions ,and maybe making the right parties pay .

Of course it is! You Fucked Savers should have joined this real estate party a long time ago. Now you are way too late.

Everything in my home was bought on credit. Via either a HELOC or credit cards. Now you HP'ers will get to pay my bill.

Wall Street scammed the world with incredible hard to understand investment vehicles. The world is pissed. Just read what is written in Spiegel and other international publications. The US has lost it's economic status in the global market place. The dollar is toast. We look like a nation of Village Idiots in a fucking Banana Republic.

Thanks Reagan , your plan worked really well. In destroying the country , that is.

##### Answer:

Yes, there is a way out of this mess.
Work hard and work smart. Be a respectable human being. Live a simple life with honor, dignity, self-respect and respect other, keep your word and be an honest person.

You know, there is such a thing as "Honor" in life. It may be hard to get used to practice and follow that word but it can be done.

Is the Americano from the land of the Great Snapper Turtle ready to follow this path and live by this code ?

We'll see...

Well, it is if you go by Obama's economic policy. It's a Ponzi scheme at heart, that collapses the moment the "rich" either retire & shut down, or move their corporations to tax shelters to Dubai.

And believe me, his plan is so extreme that this is exactly what's going to happen.

In a few years old Mr. Ponzi will finally be laid to rest because he will have been sub-planted by the new king phrase in scams...

"He Pulled A Paulson".

Brother Ponzi's work will look like child's play once we see how much this yahoo and Uncle Ben took us for when the ink runs out at the Fed.

Update this picture with Bush's head on it.

George Bushco = a Retarded Charles Ponzi.

America is a ponzi scheme, but I really think these goof balls in government are sincerely trying to stop this economic mess from getting any worse-not fully understanding how bad it's going to get for citizens.

Read history on the great depression...everything gov. tried was fruitless.

As much as I hate him, Paulson thinks he can stop this economic freefall, by trying to save all industries. However, he still expects the taxpayer to keep up their shop-till-you-drop mentality...will Paulson want to save retailers when its anounced they will have a black Christmas- the worst in history?

There are so many multiple fires happening at the same time, the fed just can't keep up.

Benanke himself got suckered into the housing ponzi scheme. He bought big home (nesting wife syndrome)in 2004...so did Obama, so did a lot of others in office.

They are all sheeple, and we the responsible ones so screwed.

Everyone, please pay attention to this warning. Same thing happened in 1929. Why do you think the market is having high, highs and low, lows?

Getting ready to crash right before our eyes.

Same thing happened to Tom Bosley of Happy Days fame....

They called it a Fonzie scheme!

LV,
The problem is, these 'goofballs' can not comprehend that you can not put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it!

yes; there's no way out since there are no more untapped resources to raid and outside the economic system.

Yes, dating back to the New Deal, whats is the social security system but classic Ponzi?

Keith, what's with your idea that this country has just become nowadays a place for real estate schemes? What was later to become the United States was a real estate speculation from the earliest colonial times. Rich people back in England and later in the settlements on the coast were massively involved in all sorts of large scale speculations from the beginning. And on the frontier small scale landowners were often more interested in flipping raw wildnerness land than in the hard slog of clearing a farm. What we have now is just a variant upon a very old pattern.
