Can someone tell me what movie this is? And is that actor Charlie Chaplin?

Anonymous said...

Yes, fuzzy thinking like that brought us WWI (the war to end all wars), WWII (a war started by idealists and ended by the flip side idealists), the hot/cold wars of the late 20th century (democracy must triumph, "Pay any price, bear any burden..."). Democracy as government is degenerate at best, and democracy guided only by science and logic is manifest evil.

Individual freedom guaranteed by faith in a realm beyond Man is the only path that can avoid the pain this guy harps about. Last week when St. Obama was in Europe, we saw similar cheering crowds and heard similar rhetoric. Will we ever learn?

Yes, Charlie Chaplin

The movie is called "The Great Dictator" (1940)

The basic plot is that Charlie plays two parts, Hynkel (Hitler) and a jewish barber who looks like the dictator.

The movie was made as an obvious screw-you to Hitler. At the time it was released, we were not yet at war with Germany, so a lot of people had a problem. Of course after Dec 7th, everyone suddenly thought Chaplin was a genius again.

The fable is that Chaplin came up with the idea when someone asked him if he was mad that Hitler had ripped off his Little Tramp character.

You Tube has a bunch of clips from the movie.

If you want to see something funny and ahead of its time, do a YouTube search for "Chaplin Modern Times Cocaine". In this bit, charlie (in jail), confuses another prisoners' cocaine for powered sugar during dinner

Charlie Chaplin quote:

"I remain just one thing, and one thing only -- and that is a clown. It places me on a far higher plane than any politician."

freedom and liberty are never free and never last long. jefferson knew this quite well. he said we must get out and fight for her, every 20 years of so, to undo what has been done, to cleanse this government and this country of traitors and to water the tree of liberty.......but very few are willing to understand this....they think voting and parties and politics are what we need to change things. now we have too many distractions. while we watch our boob toob, our enemies conspire to take whatever is left of what we thought we had in this country. imho, we have never been free and we have never had true liberty. when i think of it, it makes me sad. to be truely free, must be some kind of existence....by the way, there are many who long for this and patiently wait until the time is right, on that you can believe...

Man always falls short. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Few achieve everything they set out to do, but it is those who try, that drag kicking and screaming the masses into a future they don't understand, but eventually come to know and accept as the norm.

For all the Obama bashers and the reluctant McCain supporters (and Ron Paul groupies), there is a ebb and flow to history. Most people lack historical perspective and have opinions grounded in ignorance rather than fact.

We went in one direction and it didn't work, now it's correction time. In the process we've broken some barriers, and we'll break some more. Some call that progress.

The distinguishing mark of this country is that historically we have been a remarkably forward looking country. People from other countries are often simply amazed at this unmistakable attitude (i.e Democracy In America, Alexis de Tocqueville, 1862).

We've always been a series of walking/talking contradictions-but forward thinking has not been one of them.

I favour Gandhi on this one.

It feels really good to make passionate speeches and scream your head off and rally around a unified, just cause. And it's also really easy.

We all want to fight and we love it when someone gives us something to fight. But when you get your way by violence then you have established a system that relies on violence.

A system that relies on violence does not have truth and justice at its heart nor can it show leaderhip in the cause of truth and justice because the only way to lead is by example.

"As the means, so the end." "There is no wall of separation between means and end."

"I object to violence because, when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary, the evil it does is permanent."

So long as men die, liberty will never perish.

The US may not have been at war when the movie was released over here, but people in europe knew exactly who Chaplin was mocking. It resonated with them in a big way.

I used to go to college just down the road from Charlie Chaplin's birthplace - not much of it survived the war. Most of the area (Elephant & Castle, for those that know London), was reduced to rubble during the blitz, which really started getting bad around the time the film was released.

Was that an Obama speech or a Hitler speech?

Charlie Chaplin did pretty good for a little street urchin with a drunk for a father. Too bad it wasn’t good enough for the republican a-holes who accused him of being a commie.

Unification is almost always a bad idea. Unification means the elimination of dissent. It's a little like genetic diversity vs. monoculture . . . any species that goes down the narrow road of monoculture is at great risk of extinction.

I've never seen this movie, didn't know what it was. But at the end of his speech, when they show the cheering, frenzied crowd, is that a look of "oh-oh, what have I done?"?

Because his intentions may be the best and he starts out not wanting to be a dictator yet at the end of the speech he is screaming for everyone to unite and fight and in the course of a few short minutes he has flip-flopped 180 degrees. Or was even Chaplin himself not aware of this comical contradiction, this additional similarity between himself and Hitler?

I am offended.

For someone to have doctored a speech by Obama so that he looks like Hitler is just the worst kind of racism! Nevermind that they....,

Wha-- it ISN'T Obama? But isn't that...? No?

Well in that case, pretty funny clip.

If I remember right, this speech was delivered by the "jewish barber" who had been mistaken for hynkel and rushed onto stage for a speech.

I've read that that speech was pretty much Chaplin's views. Sounds like he would have been an Obama lefty.

Of course the world was different then. It was easier to think that everything would be OK if we got rid of the dictators and then were peaceful and cared about each other.

Hard to tell if Obama believes his utopean spiel or he just realizes it plays well.
