Congressional Approval Rating at All-Time Low

Americans’ view of Congress hit an all-time low in June, sliding into single digits for the first time ever, according to Rasmussen Reports polling data.

Only 9% of voters surveyed said that Congress is doing a good or excellent job, down from 11% the previous month. The majority of those surveyed (52%) said that Congress is doing a poor job.

Support for Congress among Democratic voters dropped from 17% to 13%. Among Republicans, congressional approval went up modestly from 7% to 8%. Only 3% of unaffiliated voters thought Congress was doing a good job, down from 6% the previous month.

A democrat controlled congress has a 9% approval rating.

Predient Bush has a 16-20% approval rating.

Any questions?

A major problem here that you're not addressing is gerrymandering

About 90% of the seats in congress are "safe" seats for either party since the boundary lines are drawn to maximize the number of seats a party gets and minimizes turnover.

Few states have non-political district mapping processes, I believe Iowa is one.

Until more states follow suit, the same people are going to keep being reelected over and over again.

That's because the other 91 percent are undecided, duh!

Now back to American Idol....

...but but but, MY congressperson promised ME that he would fight for us and bring more to us and I wouldn't have to pay for it because he said so.

Can't we just all get along?

...gotta run (oooh donuts)

Yeah, whatever Keith. You don't even know that it's been scientifically proven that 9/11 was an inside job. The proof of controlled demolition using thermite is overwhelming and no fire can explain the freefall, vertical and explosive collapse of a steel structured building. It's never happened anywhere else in history except in those three towers on 9/11 and fire causing the collapse of steel does not make a lick of physical sense. When was the last time your barbecue collapsed from fire?

It's proven OK?! It's not some cwazy conspiracy theory. We have the countless testimonies of eyewitnesses; the firefighters and the first responders and the survivors. So many of them describe the chains of explosions. So many describe the explosions in the basement, the explosions before the collapse and flashes (the kind you see in controlled demolitions). They even say they thought it was a planned demolition!

THis is cheesey. Vote out who? you have to vote in the other candidate of the other party.

ANy person elected will still be in the same system. Its not the individual congressman but the system that allows him to be bought with funding and "gifts". The majority of people would be corruptable, just likethose already in congress.

"vote the bums out" is just such a cliche. vote in better reforms, write a damn letter to your congressman once in awhile and get away from the idiot box.

We elect congressman "of the people" and quite often they get involved in cheesey scandals over bribes and corruption(many of color unfortunatley). I'll take a wealthy kennedy or dole anyday, atleast they aren't going to sell their soul and votes for a few measely grand.

LIAR!!

Democrats are wonderful and everyone should vote for them.

The approval is probably low because they want lower gas prices and more bailouts (cheques in the mail).

The problem is people aren't mad at the corruption.

It's the electoral system that is broken. But since it's the electoral system that got these people into office, they have 0 incentive to change it.

NOTHING will change in a meaningful way until you change the electoral system and the 2-party system.

The internet has made mass protest unlikely - people like me (and others on this blog) just flame on and on, and don't do anything. . .actually it WAS better in the old days when we at least went downtown at sat in at some asshole congressional office. . .now we just send an angry email. . ."I certainly told Barbara Boxer off". . . .
hey? Is Idol back on yet??

ur exactly right! Hit the nail on the head with that one! Of course both political parties have been corrupted. They had to go to the corporations with their hands out! Why!? Because YOU (the American people) were sitting on your fat asses ordering dominoes pizza! We have a democracy to the extent that our citizens are willing to raise the money for the parties themselves, to the exten that they are willing to be active. We need to be on the streets, in peoples faces, hollering through bullhorns, raising the money for our chosen political party ourselves, so there is no need for corporations. But no, you are all very comfortable driving around in your suvs living in your mcmansions, meanwhile our government grows bigger, more evil & corrupt. Our government decided that the Iraqis had been sitting on our oil for too long and so we needed a pnac flavored catalyst in the form of the 911 terrorist attacks as an excuse to declare war on any middle eastern country that was not deemed 'with us', but rather labeled 'agin us'.

So we had 13 years of republicans ruling unilaterally, not allowing dems to provide any input and 2 years of dems and Mark thinks people hate the dems?

Let me tell you Mark buddy, in the 2006 election democrats tot 7 MILLION more votes than republicans. Most elections turn on a few hundred thousand, not MILLIONS. Gives a preview of what is in store for the brainstem party.

When you parse out the parties, republican approval drops off the f*cking chart.

American election day is November 4th this year. You can celebrate President-Elect Obama by blowing stuff up on November 5th

Best holiday in Britain by far. Everyone needs to be here once for that one

Keith,

You don't get it. The bums won't be voted out in any significant numbers.

Why? because I bet you would get a far different approval rating if you asked people their opinion of their representatives vs the group as a whole.

Most think their representative is wonderful, otherwise they wouldn't, shouldn't, have voted for them. the problems with congress are the fault of the representatives from the other states.

Like the old saying "people hate all lawyers except their own"

clearly it is bush's fault that congress has a 9% approval rating. the dem congress would have a higher rating if bush wasn't in the white house ;)

Man, I'm not sure how I can be more clear than that

Who you vote in on November 5 will not matter because once the pol gets to Washington they become corrupted by the system. "Vote as we say or you set in a corner for two (or 6 years) and get no support at next election. The US has become a banana republic where power and corruption reign. Why do you think congessional approval is now 9%?

Hulk and soon-to-be-ex wife Linda were in court in Clearwater, Fla., as Mrs. H. asked hizzoner to hold her estranged hubby in contempt for failing to close on a $4.2 million Vegas condo.

As we first reported, Hulk wants to bail out on the deal -- even if it means he loses his $840,000 deposit. Linda says they had an agreement to close on the condo and Hulk had no right to withhold the cash.

Congress has a 9% approval rating. And at the very same time that statistic comes out, the fed is bailing out and assuming the "power of the purse". All illegal.

Keith,

Personally, I think the number is off by about......9%.

We need a good old fashioned revolution.

Anonymous said...

so white folks don't want to vote for Obama because he has no experience and from the list of 10 or 11 words to come to mind one of them is dishonest (please). So if experience and honesty gets you what we got now (Bush and CO) I'll take my chances on the inexperienced liar, he couldn't do any worse.

VOTE DEMOCRAT AND ALL WILL BE WELL.

Oh wait, never mind.

Don't worry. You can Vote for different incompetent, currupt shysters to replace them all.You decide who screws you......For the umpteenth time.Tell me again who is more sick.Fire them all, they all suck in bed, except Bill Clinton, who I really loved watching as he made republicans puke.Dems will gloat ,and vote, and let the entitlements rain upon the lazy.Voters-the real problem.

but why do they? how can you reconcile the 9% approval with the majority getting re-elected?

Poor people have been voting for Democrats the past 50 years...and they're still poor.

Well no shit. All the homeowners want an immediate financial resolution to this and they expect that congress has that power.

Too bad that congress has as much power keeping their home prices over-inflated (bail out or not) as they do over the laws of gravity.

Why do you think Paulson said what he did today?

because people are innately afraid of change...especially change to a "new" politician. Who says the new one will be better than the old one? They fear that the new one may be even worse.

They will wallow in their own misery, re-vote the bums in and continue to have a somewhat justifiable scapegoat to point their finger at and complain about for their woes be it employment, housing, health care etc. when nothing new ever materializes.

Anonymous said...

You're missing the big picture - as always - Keith. It's 9% because people want more stuff. They want freebies from the govt and they are upset they're not handing out the stuff. Just wait until the bailout bill is a done deal. It will shoot up to 45% as the sheeple will think, wow congress cares about me and is helping me out. And when they nationalize gas companies it will be 85%. If there is one thing congress does it it's bribe voters.

Anonymous said...

keith, you've got it wrong this time. Congress is controlled by the Dems, not the Repubs. So the 9% of folks who think it's doing a good or excellent job are 1) liberals who watch cnn, abc, msnbc, etc, and 2) liberal Republicans who also watch the same stations.

You won't find one FoxNews watcher saying the Congress is doing a good job.

Also, it is amazing to me that the vast majority of people on this site think that money spent on the Iraq war is worse than the worldwide Housing Crisis and the bailouts. Just goes to show: hatred of a single individual (Bush) can blind many to reality. I'm no Bush supporter (but I do support much of what he's done with the Iraq war and terrorism) but that doesn't blind me to the biggest problem the world faces right now: a crippled financial system due to the housing bubble. It shouldn't blind HPers either.

What happened to all of the people that wanted to vote for Ron Paul? You can write him in, can you not???

Anonymous said...

Why bother with the rigged voting that always favors incumbents?

Let's just set up summary trails and convict every member of congress for treason.

AND THEN PUBLICLY EXECUTE EVERY LAST STINKING ONE OF THEM ON LIVE BROADCAST T.V.

No wait, better yet.

Make it a pay-per-view for every congressman. Two executions per view. One Republican. One Democrat.

Send the pay-per-view money to the gov't to go directly towards the national debt.
