Bill O'Reilly asks "Is America a nation in decline?" and then blames the media and liberals for this economic disaster

You know, at this point I hope people are just laughing at the likes of Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Larry Kudlow. I actually enjoy listening to them from time to time - always good entertainment, which is all it is.

Meanwhile, as his listeners suffer, Rush laughs all the way to the bank.

Oh, enjoy this classic one of O'Reilly again (not at work)

I agree that most people are overly negative but understandably so as the last 8 years have been just big quagmire.

Eventually regulation will make the credit markets safe again and housing prices will go back up.

Eventually we will have alternatives for oil based gasoline.

Eventually we will bring democracy to the middle east.

Eventually the dollar will be strong again.

While things are bad and have been getting worse, they will eventually have to get better, some day, although nobody can predict that day and when it happens I want to be invested. Which is why now is a great time to buy and hold stocks for the next 10-20 years.

He makes good points, except the one that blames economic decline simply on rising oil prices. Has he ever had a crack at the giant welfare system run by the Fed?

Wrong. Typical American thinking. Nothing HAS to get better. Mother Nature can decide to wipe us out whenever she wants and we're helping her accelerate the process.

Faster global economic growth = faster dilapidation of planet.

What disaster? 5.5% unemployment? Oh my, it's 1933 all over again. I mean holy shit get a grip people. John Edwards was right. There are two Americas. Reality and imagined America where there is always a disaster looming around the corner.

Doomers and gloomers like you were saying the same thing in the late 70s and early 90s. Oh no the sky is falling, the sky is falling. Had any of you fools bought stock and/or real estate in 1980 or 1990 or 2002, when the end of the world was near, you'd be very rich today. The smart money is out there now buying up distressed properties and loading on stocks. You all go ahead and hoard your money in 2% CDs. Let's compare portfolios in 10 years.

And if you don't think the media influences people you're a fool. Ask people if we are in a recession and the sheep baaaahhhh yes. Ask them what a recession means and they stare blankly. Ask them if it's a good idea to extract oil from shale and they will say no it's bad for the environment. Ask them what shale is and again they stare blankly.

Bahhhhhhh

This country is FINE. More liberals and socialists the better.

I agree with most of what he said.

I'm not sure what to believe about Iraq / Afghanistan. I stay up on most topics from multiple sides, but most of what I'm getting from the war is negative stuff. I know there are bloggers out there closer to the action that are reporting a lot of good stuff going on there... I hope they are right.

I agree with what he said about education. It's a mess. We have homeschooled our kids for the last six years to keep them out of the public school system. They've done pretty well, but the overwhelming malaise of apathy infects even them.

I still think America is in decline, however. And I do attribute it mostly to disastrous liberal social policies. I think we were heading down this path before Bush, and if it hadn't been for Bush winning, we wouldn't have had the economic growth we had; we would have had socialism under Gore / Kerry. Now we're likely to have them under Obama.

I don't think Bush did a good job with the economy, but we greedy Americans are the ones to blame. We wanted what we couldn't afford. I heard a quote on the radio, attributed to NYC Mayor David Dinkens (though I haven't been able to find it on the web... I may have heard it in his own voice, though...) from 1992:

"We reject the right-wing Republican notion that if you can't afford it, you can't have it!"

Christianity sometimes gets bashed on this blog, but I have to admit, you people are MUCH nicer than those over at Calculated Risk! But, the two of the Ten Commandments might have saved us from this mess, if we Americans had followed them:

8) Thou shalt not steal.
10) Thou shalt not covet.

If I take your money or possessions by threat of force, it's called stealing. When the government does it, it's called "taxation, general welfare, and 'equitable redistribution of wealth.'" When we covet, we like to call it "the American Dream."

Private property is good, and is condoned and protected in the Bible, when it is obtained by good hard work.

Have you ever listened to liberals or their media?

Here is the agenda (heard over and over).

1. Blame America first and always.
2. Blame America for ALL of the world's ills and problems.
3. If America could be knocked down to size and stripped of all power/wealth - it would be a good thing.
4. Oh yeah - and always increase the size of government - because only government can solve problems.

There was no mention of the Housing Panic related credit crisis that's threatening to bring down the world banking system.

Maybe that was too big to get into. He'd probably oppose the housing gambler bail out though.

i sometimes question your "LIBertarian" claims.

Well sure. Republican brainstems never take responsibility for their failures. And that's just about all they have.

Like Reality-one-note preaches, if we just didn't have any government things would be great. Nevermind that when we did have a strong central government that people respected, before the conservative revolution convinced a generation that government was somehow evil, this country made huge strides in making life better for its citizens.

I hope America is in decline. It's what people deserve for their embrace of their worst instincts. Probably the best thing to happen to the world would be if the United States ceased to exist in its present form.

But until it dies, I'll sit back and watch the brainstems do everything but what they should do, still convinced that the road to success is paved with selfishness, greed and indifference to their fellow man. It makes the suffering experienced by their offspring so enjoyable to witness.

funny how liberals compalin about Rush's deal but say nothing when an empty headed Hollywood "star" makes $25M for a movie. Or when some rapper signs $100M contratcs with a record label. Then it's all wow how wonderful that they made it.

I'm not that much of a fan of his, but I say kudos to him for making money and lots of it. Watching the liberals piss themselves over it is the best part.

Now is a terrible time to buy stocks.

Regulation and trust in banks is years away.

Alternatives to Oil are years away.

First we need democracy in this country.

The dollar is toast and will never strengthen. BUY GOLD!!!

Equity markets along with Land prices are following the same pattern observed in Japan a decade ago and the bottom will be reached around Dow 6000-7000.

Some people are completely clueless and will never learn.

The Republican Part has been buying votes with lower taxes/increased debt for many years now.

It's time to pay the piper.

Thank you, Republican voters. The dollar has lost 41% of it's value since 2000. It's trash. Why? Because YOU were so fucking stupid, Republicans.

Now, let the morons come out and try to shift the blame.

I am so tired of this. If I can move to Vancouver, I will leave all of this to you, you morons.

“Eventually we will bring democracy to the middle east.”

Bwahahahahaha!
Do you really believe this?

As a 9-10 year old child I spent 2 summers living in Kabul, Afghanistan. What struck me about that place, its people, religion and culture – was how much different they were from us.

It seemed as though they were 500 years behind us in terms of the culture and mentality.

Again, this is the impression that I had as a kid! Now, how far from reality can these people be, who actually believe that we can wipe away their cultural background and impose upon them a mindset that took many centuries for the Europeans to develop?

Granted, Afghanistan is not geographically located in the Middle East, but the people, religion and culture have many similarities.

There is no way that WE will bring democracy to the Middle East. When the region’s people are finally ready for Democracy – if ever – then they will bring it upon themselves. We can’t do it for them.

That’s reality.

BOSTON—After years of relative stability, the Aerosmith unemployment rate soared to an all-time high of 20 percent Monday following the downsizing of the band's vocal sector, Steven Tyler.

Tyler, already dangerously underweight, says he will struggle to put food on the table without a steady income.
The announcement of the largest-ever round of Aerosmith layoffs sent shock waves throughout the group, but band leaders said that four decades of perfect employment was "unrealistic" and that it was necessary to shed some of the graying, outmoded workforce.

I also laugh at Al Franken, Al Gore, Keith Olberman, and that chick (?) that subs for KO while he's on a circle jerk with his old buddies at ESPN.

Keith, you want to look at what's wrong with America? Take a look at your pres pick and the scams he's into after saying he was a different type of politician. The only difference is that he has zero expense at running ANYTHING. You think Bush was bad, just wait. If he wins, Bush will look like a freaken genius.

What color is the sky on Bill's planet. We are winning in Iraq? Beating an enemy, Islamic Facists, that did not exist until Bushco invaded and civil war broke out. If we are winning then let's get our troops out. The Iraqis want rid of us anyway.

And his comments about income inequity just makes my brain hurt. The problem is failing public schools? How is improving the public school system going to help the lower 99% compete with the trust fund class who all go to elite private schools with other 1%kids and then go to Ivy League colleges to network with other trust fund kids. And of course BillO does not propose any solution for the public schools but he would probably recommend prayer in school and intelligent design "science" classes.

What his school problem/income inequity argument boils down to is that it is your own fault if you are poor so shut up and be happy you don't have less: aka blame the victim.

I do agree with BillO that the USA (Bill must know there is no such country as America)is not in decline but it sure as hell is changing. The country is at a crossroad and the path that BillO and his ilk would lead us down would kill everything that is good about the USA all in the name of saving America. That future would make Hitler proud.

This country has been going down the wrong road for too long but there are a lot of smart people out there who have seen it coming and it is our responsibility to get this country on the right path. BillO can have his "basically honest and caring Americans," what this country needs is people with brains who can help fix this mess. The "basically honest Americans" elected Georgie Bush, TWICE. Let's not give them a third strike. They mostly f*cked themselves so f*ck them.

Let's make some progress.

Here is the US in my eyes.

You are living someone else's home, and they make about 30K a year. You take that 30K a year and buy 80K worth of furniture, cars, food, gas etc. on their credit card but instead of putting it in their gas tank, in their house, in their garage and their kids mouth, you give all that stuff to the neighbor next door, that really hates the people that pay you their salary to take care of them. But then you also make shady deals with another neighbor to provide those goods to you with a kickback.

The shady neighbor is China, the neighbor that hates us is the Middle East, and the poor person paying his 30K salary a year is YOU.

Welcome to America under the Bush administration folks!

Bill O'Reilly is one of the most reasonable people on television today. You may not like his opinions, but most of the time he backs his opinions up with hard facts, not ridiculous emotions like most of the liberals out there.

What is happening in our country is not something that happened overnight, this has been a decades long bleeding of an open sore that no one wanted to pay attention to.

We need action in this country and we need it now. If we don't stand together and become self-sufficient again, we will be in decline, we will fail.

No one group gets their way all the time, it is going to take compromise and pain and challenges, but if we all refuse to get off the couch, then we get what we deserve.

I have lived in 5 countries including a communist one, a socialist one and a capitalistic one. The United States is the best country in the world, hands down. No other country comes close.

So Stand up and Fight for America! Stop trying to push her down.

O'Reilly is evil. Yes, evil. Blaming the gap between rich and poor on liberals and them having destroyed US education is a joke. There is a way to fix US education, but involves hiking up taxes, allocating more resources to schools and focusing on the worst, as opposed to the best, students. The latest thing is the secret, based on which the world's best education system by all studies, namely that of Finland, functions. The bright ones will always come out OK, no matter what the system is like. It is the weakest students that need most attention. In the US, this is overturned, which is not the making of liberals, but of conservative reactionary social darwinists, the likes of O´Reilly. Why I find O´Reilly evil is that he should at least have the decency not to blame the failure of the system, where the benefits are all reaped by the likes of him, on the poor and on the liberals. This guy is nobody to call anyone a fascist as he did. By its definition, US is a fasisct state with increasing limitations to civil liberties and a cozy relationship between the state and the "military industrial complex" rendering the system, from economic perspective, very much like that of Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy, save for the fact that instead of concentration camp inmates and POWs, the US uses "illegal" Mexicans as its slave labour. This, indeed, is a nation in decline. But I am hopefuly that it can be turned around to truly reflect the values, on which the Nation was originally formed.

It's already been done, dummy, and as failed every time! You will not make those who are not motivated to learn brighter by throwing more money at them.

======

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

That is what has been happening for decades. Every year we spend more money on education and every year the system gets worse. Washington DC has the highest per pupil spending of any school district in the country. And it is also the worst in every measure you can track.

What we need is discipline and pay for performance along with the destruction of teacher unions.

Fake republicans and Israel building neocons like O'reilly, Hannity, Rush etc. are going to get what's coming to them for supporting the worst president in the history of mankind. The second worst president is on his way with an overt marxist, socialist agenda and possible black nationalist leanings and the ability to bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Good job!

"It's already been done, dummy, and as failed every time! You will not make those who are not motivated to learn brighter by throwing more money at them."

Throwing money at them is not the sole solution, but focusing the resources on worst as opposed to the best students has tremendous benefits. Again, the Nordic school systems work like that an their average product is a real genius compared to the illerate trash we turn out.

"It's such a riot how you leftists always claim you're brighter because you believe in natural selection, yet you're the last to recognize your own hypocrisy."

So, what are you? A "Christian" neocon? Let me laugh. Yes, Darwinism explains the evolution. People do have monkeys as their remote ancestors. Yes, really. But now that we have reached this stage in evolution we can go beyond that and be humane...and work on uplifting the ones that would otherwise be left behind. "Left behind" must be a familiar expression for you :)

"Yes they are ILLEGAL in every sense of the word, jackass! And they can't be slaves since they are free to go home at any time, you typical leftist piece of crap!"

Come on. They cannot go back. Our agriculture and general society would cease to function immediately without them. While one individual could, it is hypocrisy to claim that the US could function without them.

And, no, I am not a leftist. I do believe in Adam Smith type small scale libertrarian capitalism with some regulation. What we have presently over here is Corporatocracy or Fasicm, whatever you want to call it. But it will change. It will change. You you wait and see. And, newsflash, there will be no "Apocalypse" either, no matter what your books say.
