Aren't you glad you don't live in Southern California?

I do...part time.

Actually I miss living there. I moved out for a job opportunity but I kind of regret it. Yeah sure SoCal has its issues but so does every part of the country. Overall though, as I quickly realized upon leaving the pros sure outweigh the cons.

Anonymous said...

Yes....but I'd feel that way even if home prices were still rising.

socal.. ok in bev hills.

otherwise, it is Mexifornia.

SoCal is roasted..done..turkey is cooked.

Everything about SoCal sucks! Traffic, congestion, high cost of living, illegals everywhere, street gangs everywhere, and an historic housing collapse with foreclosures on every neighborhood.

And to top it all off, we now have a loser basketball team, the Lakers. They just suffered the biggest blowout defeat in NBA history. And their idol, Kobe Bryant, sucks big time. He didnt even give half a try. I am so ashamed to live in this loser city!

FVVVVVVCK YA!!!

Now if I can only get out of Chicago..........

Anonymous said...

We left Orange County 15 months ago with absolutely no regrets. We were tired of the crowds, traffic, noise, expensive lifestyle, property taxes, etc. California has lost its luster and I have no desire to ever live there again. The only thing SoCal has going for itself now is the weather. I live in Kentucky now and it is such an incredible change for the better. The world does not revolve around California. I had to leave to be reminded of that. By the way, I sold out before the bust. Sitting pretty now.

sounds like you described Chicago!

soon to be yet again the murda capital of the world, bitches!!

I thank God every day I don't live in SoCal. It changes people, makes them in to zombie vampire leaches. It would suck to have to follow every trend, be forced to suck the blood out of the rest of America to feed the possesion addiction. SoCal killed America.

LIVE in Southern California?

I don't even like to FLY OVER So Cal...

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you! Get the movie trailer ready, September is it according to the Royal Bank of Scotland announcement today. Credit crunch, rampant inflation, banking crisis-prediction of worst bear market ever!

Yes, after living there for 21 years I won't ever go back. It smells bad, is too crowded, prices for everything are too high, everyone moves too fast, and the stress levels are unreal.
At age 50 I can now relax in my back sun room with a glass of wine, look out over deer, raccoons, foxes, squirrels, CLEAN AIR and lovely rain bows. Indiana may not be the most progressive "with it" state, but my little corner of it is just to die for.

I'm glad I do live in southern california. And I'm renting. And I have a job building things that go into space. And it's not defense-related at all. And the school system we're in is excellent, populated with parents who care about their kids education, and of a range of ethnic backgrounds. And when I tire of this, I'll move up to our property in the foothills, east of Stockton, where it's beautiful all year long, with seasons, and friendly neighbors. Another great part of .California

Sure, SoCal has its problems. Everywhere does. No, the world doesn't revolve around SoCal, but neither is it the awful caricature that some folks seem to think. It's a huge economy, with lots of interesting opportunities, and a bunch of good, hardworking people.

You guys are fags. SoCal is pretty dicked up, but you can have a tip-top life here. I work on a TV show, have a hot Asian girlfriend 11 years younger than me, go to great swap meets every week where I not only find cheap-ass video games, graphic novels, etc, but always find stuff to make good dough off of on Ebay...there's always something good and cheap to do. Car shows, hikes, beach crap, baseball, free museum days, etc. You losers can bad-mouth LA for all you want, and I do understand the things you always point to. But if you are wicked smart like I am, you can lead an awesome, abnormal life. I don't even get stuck in traffic much, because I pay a little extra to live near Santa Monica...so I am usually going against the flow. But still...I pity people that live in Seattle or many other areas, and it all comes down to weather. I go out in the sun almost every damn day of the year, and it's something special. Of course there are a ton of douche-bag types out here, but you can certainly choose to find a good person to spend your life with, and then who cares about all those people that you'll probably never talk to in your life? And like there aren't a bunch of douche bags in your town, too. I like it so much out here that I accept the possibility of death if there is ever a major disaster out here. I'm sure as hell not going to go live in boring-ass Montana, hiding out my whole life growing tomatoes because I want to be 100% safe above all else. My life is tits and you can suck it. No I will not want your sympathy if the shit goes down, and I sure as hell was too smart to get sucked into buying property in the last 5 years. I never see gangs out here...the person who made that comment is a complete douche that I would wager watches a LOT of TV.

NO. I can walk to grocery stores restaurants, bars, etc. If I can't walk to it it's only a ten minute drive. The weather is nice. I have a bus stop one block away. I have kick-ass rent control. My utility bills are next to nothing because I'm not running air conditioning or heating all day. I LIKE living in a cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world. Burbank airport is easy to use. Plenty of entertainment/recreation/professional sports. Oh, and we actually allow people to marry! Soon we'll be banning polluting cars and expanding our metro system. All we need is $8/gallon gas to clear up the traffic and some lower housing prices and we're good to go.

I am GLAD I live in Los Angeles,I would not leave for anything in the world.

it's so easy to make money in this over populated county it's just crazy.of course you have to have the brain to get it done, which most of the people that complain about socal don't have.

just ask Frank,he'll tell you.

I love living in COASTAL California - being semi-retired and working a bit from home - no traffic, lots of golf courses, biking, etc. I agree, I would not live down here if I had to commute. . .other than that, if you live within sight of the ocean, you are in "the great white homelands" of California. . .think about it - from Oregon border to Imperial Beach on the Mexican Border, if you can see the ocean, you live in a different California - Malibu, La Jolla, Newport Beach - in NorCal - Stinson Beach, Monterey/Carmel. . .Pacific Heights and SeaCliff in SF, and clear up to Mendicino and Eureka. . .guess you could say the "great RICH homelands" lots of rich Asians, Blacks and Mexicans along the shore also. . .

Anonymous said...

I live in LA, Pasadena specifically and like it. My wife and I each commute less than 5 miles to work and the weather is great.

Anonymous said...

I'm thinking of moving there from Thailand... because it has great weather, suitable for people who like the outdoors with big mountains within a few hours of driving (high sierra) and lots of backyard hikes in the san gabriels... i do like my low cost lifestyle here in thailand but the weather is too hot and it's easy to go stir crazy. If you aren't into getting pissed drunk every night and hooking up with the local lasses (I'm happily married and don't want to ruin my relationship) then this place gets pretty boring.

What a joke. This is the stupidest "Stupid Question of the Day" EVAR.

First of all - for all you haters who are glad you don't live in So Cal - please do not come here...ever. For anybody living or visiting here who is not happy, please leave...now. Do what Keith suggests and walk away from the stucco sh!tbox that you are buried under and never come back.

Second, yes, We have some problems in California - many of which have been listed already. But is a "27% decline in home values" a problem? No, this is a solution to a problem. Keith either knows this and is just stirring the pot a little, or I have been giving him too much credit. Or both.

Me, I love living in San Diego. I am 32 years old, a third generation San Diego native. I have traveled to 46 of the 50 United States, and many places outside of the US as well, and nothing is quite the same as my home town. I live a block from the ocean, I have a good job, no debt and money in the bank. When I feel like housing prices are stable, I might just buy a home here.

Ha, I have a duplicate of that in Central Florida with no state income tax, no state fees, no fear of the Border crossers(check the bars on the windows for the truth) and great weather too. SD has it's share of crappy weather at the wrong times of the day. been there and done that many times.

Just imagine San Diego and LA in another 15 years. It will be an extension of Tijuana. According to a new survey, more than half of workers in LA are already Mexican. Don't forget that they breed like flies. While you have 1 or 2 (or none whatsoever) kids, Mexicans have 6. Prepare the wallet because you'll need to earn at least $250k to pay for all that crime, welfare, social services, bureaucracy, etc. Good luck with your retirement in poverty.

OK Genius,

Are you implying that there will never again be a good time to buy real estate? Are you saying that this real estate crash is bottomless? Housing prices are doomed to fall to zero?

What exactly are you saying?

According to HP, McMansiosn suck, but 1 bedroom rental apartments don't. The reaosn everything sucks on HP is that they are jealous and can't afford nice things. Most HPers will end up being renters for the rest of their life or buy some horribly trashed REO in the bad school district right next to the interstate.

Being a Southern California native I had put in my two cents. While many of you point out the negatives of SoCal, you forget to point out the positives. SoCal is a melting pot of differnt cultures. We have beautiful beaches and mountains a bit farther inland. Mexico is a stone´s throw away, Vegas is four, bay area six, and Hollywood an hour. YES traffic may get bad here and there, YES there are gangs and violent people, and YES the cost of living is expensive. But somethings are ubiquitous throughout the country and you just LEARN to deal with it. Financially responsible people who live in SoCal aren´t worrying about losing their homes or wondering how they are going to pay off their CC. They are more worried about the rise in gas prices just like EVERY other American.

Southern California is full of the most beautiful women in the country, even though they may be a bit pretentious.

I've met a lot of people who left SoCal due to the costs and quickly moved back, realizing it's the best place to live in the US and well worth the cost.

It also offers a huge variety of living choices ... LA, Orange County, San Diego, Inland Empire, Coachella Valley, are all unique and different. For me, coastal OC is heaven on earth.

It also weeds out those lacking enough brainpower to make it here, who are forced to move to Phoenix/Scottsdale then they spend the rest of their lives badmouthing SoCal out of envy.

the best part of living in the los angeles area is the weather. and the lack of natural disasters except earthquakes. the last one was in '94 in northridge. of course you need money to buy in the rich safe school districts, but you can obviously rent.

"According to a new survey, more than half of workers in LA are already Mexican. Don't forget that they breed like flies. While you have 1 or 2 (or none whatsoever) kids, Mexicans have 6."

I call anon BS on this statement! Are you an idiot? Why are you assuming that the children are going to anything like their parents? Your comparing dirt-poor, uneducated, zero-language skills immigrants to kids with multiple language skills, a US education, who can make more money at Best Buy than any of their parents generation. You obviously have no experience with acculturation. Like some US born and raised kid in L.A. is going to wind up having 6 kids? Give me a break. You can actually get an abortion here.

All I need to know about LostAngles …
-- look from a high spot like the Caltech
library on any afternoon, and the air is
too thick to see the ocean, or sometimes
some San Gabriel hills.
-- water is supplied from the north, and the
diminishing snowpack and continuing
drought make the future bleak. (desalting
will remain too energy-intensive)
-- MacArthur Park and many areas are
infested with the vilest lowlife gangs.
-- Reconquista is a way of life in barrios.
Don't run out of gas in one.
-- The network of faults under the area
means severe earthquakes coming soon.
-- friends have moved just to get out.
-- the beaches are funky; dead seaweed;
dirty cold water.
-- anonymous trashtalkers try to prop up
the image to prop up property prices.
-- rush hour is crawl hours.
-- I would not send a kid to LA schools.
-- You can't safely take Century from
LAX late at night.
--Much of film industry has
relocated to Florida; Canada; etc.

I really hope that the people that think SoCal is so great stay there. To the other people that regret leaving please go back. In fact I wish more people would move there. It will make the chaos and dieoff all that more entertaining.

Remember the riots?

I mostly hate Southern California. The traffic is unreal. I had an ex that moved there for college and wanted to live there after. She just assumed that I'd move where ever she would go. I don't move for anyone.

She had this "nothing bad is ever going to happen to me" mentality. I am sure by now she'd had several wake up calls with new relationships, probably kid(s), job market, and real estate.

I hated her, but she was so good in bed. No other girl has been as adventurous.

The only thing I find appealing about Southern California is that it is the heart of the porn industry. I predict we will see new very pretty darlings in the next few years since the easy money from real estate is gone.

My statement is based on factual report and reliable sources:

The Alliance for Excellent Education estimates that high school dropouts from the Class of 2006-07 will cost the U.S. more than $329 billion in lost wages, taxes and productivity over their lifetimes. Young people of color are most affected, because nearly half of all African-American and Native-American students will not graduate with their class, while

less than six in 10 Hispanic students will graduate from high school.

Experts say that those who drop out are more likely to be incarcerated, rely on public programs and social services, and go without health insurance than those who graduate from high school.

You can read the comprehensive report with detailed stats here:

If California is so great, why is it bankrupt?

Anonymous said...

I left Los Angeles almost 10 years ago and don't regret a bit. I now live better, oceanfront, don't pay any rip-off state taxes and fees to support Californian welfare parasites, my commute is 10 minutes, my sales taxes are much lower than in CA, not only my income is higher but I've been saving a ton of money since I left that cesspool. Best financial decision I made. You stay there to support all the millions of Mexicans and their zillion babies...and the ultraliberals who bankrupted the state. Has your life gotten better in California during the past 5 years? I rest my case.

Let's stop it with the melting pot thing and SoCal. America is only a melting pot when people give up their ancestors' nationalities, adopt English, and become American with some faint traces of the old country like the St Patty's day parade and a secret family recipe for Goulash. Yes, that's a melting pot, many ethnic origins but really, one nation with one culture and regional differences.

FYI, this occurred throughout the 20th century as there are very few communities, with 3rd or 4th generation Americans, speaking fluent Hungarian or Russian, outside of academicians who love languages. In other words, a special interest group within itself.

What SoCal has a is huge divide between American-English speakers and those who speak Spanish. And these divides are persistent, unlike the formerly eastern European ones where the children adopted mainstream behaviors of their Anglo-Saxon peers.

Anonymous said...

It's funny how everyone hates LA (including most of the losers that move here to "act")but everyone fights to move here.
Every second country song has the character either visiting or moving to California.
And to all the people that hate Mexicans: good for you. You have already lost in life. If you are concerned about Mexican immigrants competing with you for jobs or housing you have bigger problems than a housing bubble.
Keith: what's going on?! I've read this for a long time and the quality is heading way down. I'm thinking you picking the top of the market to the day to invest your funds may be causing some stress. I went heavily short the day you called a rally in the market and if my positions are the mirror opposite of yours you must be hurting.
Attacking somewhere a lot of your readers live just doesn't seem that smart.

gsanford said...

Here is another reason to hate LA. Gas is well over $4.50 a gallon, probably the highest in the nation outside of San Fran.

Anonymous said...

Hello mickeyc,

There are those non-SoCal types on the east coast and other locales who're alarmed at the growing Spanish-only speaking populations w/o assimilation.

That's part of the reason why Cuban-Americans are highly regarded on the coast, from NY to Miami, vs let's say Mexicans and Guatemalans because they bring the latin culture but have assimilated in other ways, language and behavior, which is essentially the story of most so-called Americans, whose ancestors have settled from coast to coast.
