HousingPANIC Quote of the Day

"With all of the recent turmoil we have been experiencing in our mortgage market, I am concerned about allegations of preferential treatment afforded to some individuals in Congress regarding their mortgages."

"Although these reports are still merely allegations, it is disconcerting to think members of Congress might be knowingly or unknowingly receiving preferential treatment while millions of hardworking Americans struggle to repay their mortgage debts and cope with $4/gallon gasoline and soaring foods prices."

- Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), calling for MoziloGate hearings, June 2008

Good god, how much more proof do you need?

I can't stand the Democratic party. I can't stand the Republican party. And people who identify with either party are co-conspirators.

Free your minds. Democrats, Republicans and Realtors are all dying breeds.

Wow, really? A republican is trying to make political hay out of a couple democrats getting "rich guy deals" on their mortgages? You don't think he has an agenda, do you?

F*cking republicans spent the better part of 14 years looking the other way as the wealthy and their colleagues in Congress got preferential treatment to the tune of BILLIONS in everything under the sun but now those pathetic pieces of human garbage are outraged? Does anybody remember all the scandals that precipitated the republican brainstem leaders losing the Congress in 2006?

Of course there's political corruption in both parties. If there was more than a couple thousand libertarians we'd hear about their corruption too.

But it boils down to the overall picture of what the parties do. it can be reduced to a short saying.

"I'd rather have a politician who will dance with the devil and do me some good than one who will sing with the saints and console me on my losses."

A translation for the brainstem conservatives: With all of their warts, democrats will at least make life better for people as they always do when they control the agenda. Conservatives will lie, cheat and steal to enrich themselves while cutting services and making life much harder for the average citizen.

The choice is clear.

Yes, he has an agenda, and why should that prevent us from cheering him in this case? I would cheer a democrat, too, if he uncovers more republican corruption.

Bitterrenter,

"I'd rather have a politician who will dance with the devil and do me some good than one who will sing with the saints and console me on my losses."

Then you deserve all the political corruption coming your way . . . while yourself being robbed blind by both parties. All the corruptions and machinations are "good" for someone . . . just not you. For example, government subsidized home loans, they just give you a rope to hang yourself if you are a buyer as all house prices are bid skyhigh; if you are a bitter renter, you are robbed anyway, because when it all falls apart it's your money that does the bail out. Whose "good" get served? The bankers of course; that's why they take home billions in bonuses, and give a few million here and there to the Democrats.

"democrats will at least make life better for people as they always do when they control the agenda."

That's complete nonsese. That feckless lie has been exposed so many times by the previous thread. For all your name calling, you still haven't come up with a good answer. Methinks you are just some bought and paid for shill for the ultra-rich who want to benefit from an ever expanding government, so that they can use the governemnt to rob the middle class at gun point . . . like they have done for the last couple thousand years!

RBS warning: Be prepared for a 'nasty' period.

The Royal Bank of Scotland has advised clients to brace for a full-fledged crash in global stock and credit markets over the next three months as inflation paralyses the major central banks.

"A very nasty period is soon to be upon us - be prepared," said Bob Janjuah, the bank's credit strategist.

A report by the bank's research team warns that the S&P 500 index of Wall Street equities is likely to fall by more than 300 points to around 1050 by September as "all the chickens come home to roost" from the excesses of the global boom, with contagion spreading across Europe and emerging markets.

RBS warning: Be prepared for a 'nasty' period
Such a slide on world bourses would amount to one of the worst bear markets over the last century.

"Does anybody remember all the scandals that precipitated the republican brainstem leaders losing the Congress in 2006?"

That was one of the reasons why they should have lost power as they did in 2006. Corruption and abuse of power should result in loss of offices. It's as simple as that. Otherwise, you end up with mafia in government . . . but then again maybe that's what you personally work for anyway.

The way to fix this is to stop voting for people because they are "Democrat" or "Republican" and start voting for somebody who isn't corrupt. The big problem in many districts is that the person with the D besides their name or the R besides their name is the main factor in them being elected.

This allows somebody to become corrupt as hell, because that district would never vote for the challenger with the wrong letter next to their name.

Pretty weak response there Anon 6:24. Sad but typical of a brainstem conservative.

And Reality, saying you refuted anything is wishful thinking. But perhaps your idea of a no-government, voluntarily supported society will be the answer to corruption. A few bake sales, some antique auctions and we're good to go!

Bitterrenter,

I do not claim original authorship to those limited-government ideas. The men of 1776 did. To people who are used to live under an all-pervasive government authority and never study how human society is organized and how human beings behave, those words must have been just as unconventional and frightening as they are to you:

"A great part of that order which reigns among mankind is not the effect of government. It had its origin in the principles of society, and the natural constitution of man. It existed prior to government, and would exist if the formality of government was abolished. The mutual dependence and reciprocal interest which man has in man and all the parts of a civilized community upon each other create that great chain of connection which holds it together. The landholder, the farmer, the manufacturer, the merchant, the tradesman, and every occupation prospers by the aid which each receives from the other, and from the whole. Common interest regulates their concerns, and forms their laws; and the laws which common usage ordains, have a greater influence than the laws of government. In fine, society performs for itself almost everything that is ascribed to government."

These are not my words. These are words from Thomas Paine, the man who invented the name "The United States" and the man whose writings inspired the American Revolution.

How high up your ass is your head to believe that democrats will make life better for anybody. That's not what they are about. They want to make sure that nobody's life is WORSE than anybody else's. There are two ways to accomplish this. One is to punish those who are doing well and pushing the others until they catch up, and the other is to stop the first group and wait for the second to catch up natually. Of course they would like to do the first, but they are just as happy doing the second.

Either way, if you are doing well, it don't mean shit to a democrat unless they can take from you to make it better for someone else.

Republicans have their own set of issues, but to say that either party are saints is to just not get it.

250 years is a long time. Society is much more complex. The founders you are so enamored with didn't have any idea the adjustments we'd have to make to keep society orderly and participatory.

You want to harken back to a time when we were all connected. This was a major premise of Adam Smith's theories, that social responsiblity and doing right by your fellow man would be enforced by the proximity of people to each other.

That's gone. We live in a world where we can do things to others and not feel the effects, not see the look in their eyes, not feel any shame for our actions. We can be sitting by a pool in Tahoe while our government bombs a country back to the 1300s. A CEO can layoff 10,000 people and never have to see their faces or know their stories. Without proximity, the social contract breaks down and it takes a strong centralizing force to make sure society functions and that priorities and needs are met.

Those people in the 1700s had governments, too. Whether it was the town elders, the mayor, or the feudal lord, someone called the shots and ensured citizen participation in the functioning of the societal unit. Life was just smaller then and decisions for the community were made locally. People who pulled out of the group, who dishonored the social contract, were cast out to be eaten by bears.

Not a bad approach to dealing with selfish libertarians/conservatives.

Your way doesn't work, never has worked. It's all theory and if implemented would lead to anarchy. People like you want desperately to convince that it can work. But your motivation is borne of pure selfishness and greed and a desire to withdraw from society. You may say that society will pick up the slack for government but it never happens.

One only need look to Mexico or most South American countries where, in the absence of being forced to, wealth does little to support their country or society.

Bitterrenter,

1. People were exterminating other tribes an ocean away as early as the early 1500's (Conquistadors). By the 1700's, the global trade system was well in place. Let's not forget, the tea dumped into the Boston harbor by the Tea Party was imported from China and India by the British East India Company, a government-authorized monopoly for trade on the other side of the globe. Your imagination that people in colonial times lived in self-sufficient villages goes to show just how ignorant you really are: colonial towns had never been self-sufficient, not since the days of the original founding of Jamestown and Plymouth. They all relied on trading with Europe for their basic necessities; that's why tobacco was such an important crop in colonial times, not because they were heavy smokers. LOL. It was a cash crop for buying supplies.

2. The complexity of modern life as then emerging in the late 17th and 18th century was precisely the reason why the idea of individual liberty was re-awakened: liberalism was born precisely because centralized authoritarian decision-making no longer worked as society become more complex and the globe became more inter-connected; ideas that sounded perfectly reasonable in London, like raising taxes in North American to provide for North America's own defense and societal general well-being, did not seem reasonable at all in practice in the eyes of North American colonists, who saw redcoats rummaging through colonist households and posessions enforcing stamp tax.

3. You are not a liberal, you are an authoritarian. And a very conceited one at that. Read up on John Locke (the grand daddy of liberalism) vs. Thomas Hobbes, and you will find your own positions eerily similar to Hobbes, who advocated for Monarchy (feudal privileges). Here's a hint: no advocate of authoritarianism ever promised their system as the most efficient way of putting people into gas ovens; instead, it's always the promises of government being able to take care of all people if and only if it were given all the power. The useful idiots keep forgetting that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" then find themselves sitting in a pot of water with temperature rising.

4. Advocating liberty for the individual is not at all advocating withdrawal from society. On the contrary, respecting free will is what will promote and facilitate exchange. Government taxation and regulation will only serve to put a burden on exchanges, if not banning the type of exchange out-right. On top of that, rules contrary to the individual's free will inevitably lead to inefficiency and cause boundary problems at the geopolitical borders. That's why socialists inevitably become national socialists ("Nazis").

Bitterrenter,

"Not only will they make life better, they always do when they control the agenda."

Really? Shortly after taking office, FDR forced all Americans to exchange their gold for paper dollar at $20/ozt, . . . a year later, he raised gold price to $35/ozt. How exactly did robbing people 40% of all their monetary posessions make their lives better? How exactly did continuation of Hoover's government commitees on everything make lives better? How exactly did looking for a war to fight, rounding up 10 million young men into slavery and getting hundreds of thousands of them killed over seas make people's lives better? okay, that took them off the unemployment statistics. LOL. How exactly did not allowing anyone to have any new cars and rationing all life's necessities in order to wage a war that didn't have to involve the US make people's lives better?

"If not for the creation of a contributory, progrssively taxed society, most of you would still be ignorant, poor and shitting outdoors.
"

American people were better educated and had far greater per capita income growth rate before the imposition of the progressive income tax. The Kansas public school exam for 8th graders in 1894 can probably fail the majority of college graduates today. Indoor plumbing re-emgerged in Europe and North America in the 1840's, and became comon place by the late 19th century . . . long before the arrival of progressive income tax. On the other hand, it's been nearly 100 years since the introduction of progressive income tax, the state of affair for indoor plumbing hasn't improved much since the late 19th century. In fact, utility pipes in NYC and other major cities are blowing up due to lack of maintenance and replacement ever since those same pipes were put into service back in the same late 19th century . . . before the introduction of progressive income tax. Now you see the perils of lacking growth under socialism: our infrastructure is literally falling apart all around us because the government wisemen have killed the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Anonymous said...

Reality buddy, you're off your rocker. Unfortunately, as I've said countless times before, your way isn't what got us here. If things were better in some imaginary time of no government nothing would have changed. Problem is, there never was a time of no government.

You can try and predict what life would be like had we not pursued a big government agenda, progressive taxation, fluoridation or the advent of TV dinners. But see, we didn't take the path you find so magical. We took a different one and created a great society that has only been declining since people allowed your libertarian republicans to get back into power, something that always causes misery.

Now I could start reaching back to some arcane historical reference to give my argument credence, but I don't have to. We tried savagery- your way- for centuries and it failed miserably. Then we tried my way and lo and behold, great things happened.

You can criticize it, rail against it or say that things were better way back when in some make-believe isolationist Utopia but the truth is my way, the way we adopted as a country, WORKED.

Poor libertarians. Like conservatism it is a failed ideology whose sole purpose is to justify a mindset of selfishness and greed. In its latest incarnation it professes a compassion for others "if you'll just stop making us pay our fair share to live in this country we promise we'll contribute to our society."

Sure you will. Of course. But let's just leave things like they are and we'll just keep taking the payments out of your check. We trust you, really we do. We know how much you want to pay for the services you use and we completely trust that you'll voluntarily pay, but just to make sure, we're going to have to force you to pay. No really, it's no bother. Why of course we believe you. Just pay your bills and we'll call it day, m'kay?

F*cking deadbeats. What is wrong with you people? Your beliefs aren't even human.

Anonymous said...

Bitterrenter,

1. Actually there was a time of limited government in the US, then the federal government got bigger and bigger. As the federal government got bigger, the economic growth rate became slower.

2. You are being self-contradictory when you limited government never existed and yet making the claim that "We tried savagery- your way- for centuries and it failed miserably." Make up your mind, one way or the other.

3. The truth of the matter is that humanity indeed tried savagery for thousands of years, in the form of oppressive governments. That's what made American Revolution, the advocacy of a limited government, so revolutionary.

4. BTW, all those oppressive governments that came before the American Revolution, all had a theory about their use of power to improve the society for all. Some even cited devine reasons why they are ordaned by God to make the lives of the ordinary people better.

5. "Now I could start reaching back to some arcane historical reference to give my argument credence, but I don't have to."

No you can't; nobody would be able to. If you know anything about hisotry, you'd know that power corrupts and history is replete with failed social engineering attempts. That's the conclusion the founding fathers came to after they studied history. BTW, history of 20th century social engineering miseries is not arcane history; nor is 1776 the founding of this republic for anyone who is an American. Your calling it "arcane history" jut goes to show how ignorant you are. Your ignorance is making you fall into the classic Authoritarian trap, which is fundamentally opposite to every single liberal value!

Social engineering not only works, it works remarkably well. Social Security dropped old age poverty from 80% to 20% in about one generation.

Our government has made huge investments in three areas over the past 200 years. Agriculture, medicine and defense. All three have been rousing successes, the envy of the world. The Japanese did similar with electronics.

Government is a marvelous engine of innovation when it works in concert with the private sector, but the private sector alone will spend all of its time duplicating effort, seeking the useless but profitable markets and generally wasting resources.

The civilized world lives in orderly societies with leaders (elected or not) and not anarchy. The ironic thing is that if we could change over to your way of thinking you and those like you would be the first ones complaining. Good thing this country has soundly rejected the conservative/libertarian movement and has pushed those brainstems of society to the fringes once again.

Come back again and again with your "what if" arguements. You'll NEVER, EVER see your way played out in the modern civilized world.
