HousingPANIC Stupid Question of the Day

In your lifetime, have you ever seen the United States in worse shape in terms of leadership, corruption, economics, world standing, social politics, monetary policy or national mood? I have, once. But we're looking to surpass that Carter/Iran/Inflation/Recession morass soon.

We've never needed competent leadership as a nation more than we do today. Damn, I hope to see some changes for the better in 2009.

This is why I tell people that Obama may be our best choice for our next president at this time. I hardly remember the Carter presidency and because most of my friends are younger than me, they don't remember it at all, but I do know that 1980 was a pretty sad year. That's why beating the Soviet Union in hockey at the Winter Olympics was extra special -- it wasn't just that they were the Soviet Union, it was because our economy was pretty screwed up at the time, and the Iran hostage crisis didn't help either.

Say whatever you will about Reagan, but he made a lot of people feel proud to be Americans once again. I think Obama is capable of doing this as well. More than anything, we need a leader at this time that can inspire us and heal the wounds we have suffered over the past several years.

It's 1975 not 1980...
we've got a number of bad years yet before someone can lead out of this mess. The next pres is truly screwed no matter who it is like hoover/carter.

R. Paul will be the Goldwater of this election cycle "we should've listened to that guy."

Bush ain't the greatest, but he's still got a hell of a way farther to go to beat that sorry bastard son of a bitch Carter.

When that asshole was in office, my parents got 13% on their CD's, mortgage interest rates were at a level that makes current ARM's look like a bargain, and my dad took early retirement specifically because it looked like his employer was going to fail. It didn't, but it did merge into a stronger one....couldn't have predicted that, and he figured a guaranteed pension was better than unemployment.

I remember sitting in the back of the station wagon (no kiddie seats then!), and hearing my parents discuss whether they were ever going to get out of the line leading up to the gas station that snaked around the block. America was OPEC's bitch, and how.

No matter how screwed up Iraq is, there's no way that it could be any worse than the brutal ass raping we took during the Iran hostage crisis. Hell, your average five year old could have handled it better than Carter did.

Dis Reagan all you want, at least the Iranians were scared enough of that potentially crazy SOB that they let the hostages go instead of dealing with who-knows-what he might have unleashed on their ass.

And regarding the Olympics, as the first poster did? Don't forget the Summer Olympics, when Carter kept our team home to show the Soviets that he was seriously pissed about them invading Afghanistan. Yeah....he sure showed them. Dumbass.

That son of a bitch "accomplished" all that humiliation of this country in one term. Bush hasn't managed half of that shit in two.

I swear I'm gonna throw a party when that human stain Carter dies. But I have the feeling that asshole is gonna live to be 100 and might outlive me, so I'll never get the chance.

I have to agree with the poster regarding Carter.

When asked about the low pay for enlisted military members he advised that they should apply for food stamps and other social services to supplement their income.

Can I get an invite to your (postmortem) party?

Of course, Bush is the Anti-Christ. So I am not sure which one will be judged worst by history.

Carter was a much better president than the waste of carbon currently occupying the oval office. Carter inherited a mess left by Ford-Nixon. As far as the Iran hostage thing.... the Iranians made a deal with Reagan before he got elected (remember the whole Iran arms issue that turned in to Iran-Contra). Reagan interfered with that situation which prolonged it. Carter attempted to send in the Delta force, but a sand storm killed that plan. Give me Carter any day over anyone from the Bush family.

What's the difference between Bush and Reagan? Both reduced the top earner's tax rates. Both believed in debt spending like there's no tomorrow. Both were secretive and were involved in questionable deals. -- I think the leadership came from the FED which didn't give a rats ass about Wall Street, but wanted to tame inflation. Not by pixie dust, but thru money supply...

Of course that leaves us where we are today. You can only live on the credit card so long. Reagan started the practice and if we're lucky Bush will be the last credit card savior. Based on the current election results I don't Bush is the last credit card savior. Hillary, Obama, Romney and McCain all plan on spending wildly so I don't see a leader. Maybe by the 2012 election a leader will step forward, but right now I don't see any change whatsoever. All four them are going to ask the same thing on the first day, "How exactly does this credit card work? . . . Great, so in my first hundred days I plan to spend more than any President before me."

Slightly off subject, but Jimmy Carter was just so bad. In fact the 70's were just so bad that younger folks here have no idea what it was like.

The combination of Watergate, the Vietnam debacle and it's reverberations, the oil embargo, a terrible economy and stagflation, along with terrible leadership from Nixon, Ford and Carter. These made such a terrible environment that even the kids knew things were in terribly wrong.

I remember the first time I heard a congressman on TV saying that America was the greatest nation on earth and I though WTF is this guy talking about?!? (although the F wasn't in my vocabulary at that time).

Frontline (PBS) aired a expose of rotten Shotgun Dick Cheney's career political antics last night.

As a result of viewing this story, In a properly ordered society, the outrage should be so vehement that this first thing morning Cheney would be arrested, shackled and jailed for his crimes, along with many others.

Instead, he will live out his miserable life in wealthy exile with his rich corrupt friends at Halliburton in their new world headquarters in Dubai.

The USA is morally and fiscally bankrupt and headed for soon for Death.

Joe Six-Pack will die soon, too, from their stupidity, laziness greed and avarice. I have complete and final contempt for my fellow americans.

I hope Dick Cheney's heart sudenly and without warning stops today. The world would be a better place without him in it.

May he burn in hell for eternity.

Imagine America being the joke of the world militarily and economically (Hmm...sounds like BUSH).

Imagine 21% mortgages (You mean, like the massive unprecedented foreclosures we have under BUSH).

Imagine waiting hours in line for gas. (No, its better the way we have it now with people charging up their credit cards for $3.50 a gallon!!!)

Imagine 10%+ real unemployment (unemployment worse now if you take into account REIC unemployment, i.e. construction, realtors, furniture salespeople, banking industry, etc).

Imagine taking a friendly pro-USA middle east country and HELOING install a radical islamic anti-USA government. (Yes, the state of affairs in the Middle East is much better now with half a million Iraquis dead, 4000 plus American soldiers dead, tens of thousands of American soldiers wounded, a gigantic deficit that we cant possibly pay for the war, and a never ending quagmire called "Iraq WAR- Mission accomplished)

Imagine Billy Carter in the news

Our you f'n kidding us? I watched him give a speech a few nights ago (in Michigan, I believe) - the first time I've watched him say more than 1 sentence. He went on and on about how he and our government is going to do this for us, that for us, etc. He repeatedly said he's going to put money "back in my pocket."

WTF? How about NOT taking MY money to begin with?!? The only thing I want my government to do is protect my rights and protect our borders - NOTHING MORE!!!

Obama is a hardcore Socialist - just like Hillary and the rest of these carpetbaggers. Ron Paul is the ONLY guy who wants to get government out of our pocketbooks, bedroom, etc.

Go ahead and vote for Obama. All we're going to get is more Status Quo bullshit. It's morons like you that act as enablers for these fuckers...

Carter gets the shaft because of the hostages (which was later PROVEN to be a Republican conspiracy- arms for hostages anyone?) and because he made the tough decision for the betterment of this country. And by the way, he inherited the economic malaise that was the 1970s and did his best to stop digging the hole.

Reagan was a douchebag who did nothing but sell off the country and increase debt. And by the way, he did not end the cold war- it was won over several years.

"at least the Iranians were scared enough of that potentially crazy SOB that they let the hostages go instead of dealing with who-knows-what he might have unleashed on their ass."

When Reagan was president, I felt embarrassed to be an American. While traveling overseas during this period, everyone was ridiculing him. Everyone!

This charlatan was a far better actor while serving as president, than he ever was during his career as an actor. And even today, he is still pulling the wool over many people’s eyes.

Bash Carter all you want, but don’t forget that he tried to push this country toward energy independence by funding research on Solar and other alternative sources of energy. He even lived by example – he had Solar panels installed on the White House!

When Reagan – who was in the pockets of both Nuclear Power and Big Oil – became president, this funding was eliminated and the solar panels were removed from the White House roof.

If instead he had continued the momentum toward energy independence that Carter initiated, America would not be dependent on the Saudis, et al for its energy needs, and we would not be forced to watch the humiliating spectacle of America’s president kissing Arab butt in exchange for oil.

Under Carter, Americans at least were still liked. In the hostage crisis, people all over the world were compassionate.

Reagan was the beginning of the end of the US: greed, tax reduction for the rich only, globalisation, turbo capitalism...

The Vietnam syndrome was the best that could happen to the US. Kept Americans down-to earth and reasonible. After Reagan, they felt like the new Herrenmenschen, thought they could get away with anything.

I was exchange student in the US in one of the Carter years and loved it. There is no way I would send my kids to the US now. Rather to Zimbabwe. Nice going, GWB. You did tremendously for US reputation in the world.

P.S. Ok, Zimbabwe is a bit over the top, so let it be South Africa. No joke.

Though, I'm a 'bitter renter' now so I actually don't have to worry about affording them any longer...I can pay cash for it all instead. Thanks Keith and HP!

I'm not sure where this all went wrong...you can point all the fingers you'd like (Former dirty hippie boomers? Republicans? Democrats? The 'Me' generation? GenX?) but the real responsibility lies with each and every one of us who bought into the endless cycle of mindless materialism. Since the end of WWII, Americans have been too busy buying things they don't need and spending money that they don't have to smell the distinct (and exponentially increasing) odor of corruption and decay that surrounds them.

Read Atlas Shrugged. We are from the government, and we are here to help.

Prices are out of control, unemployment...yada yada yada. If sheeple were smart enough to not max out all their credit cards and be upsidedown in mortgages they couldn't afford in the first place none of this would be an issue. But then, they wouldn't be sheeple, would they?

Anonymous said...

Carter was a genius compared to the drooling idiot in office now. The economy sucked, but much of that was fallout from Nixon era repeal of usury laws. They were times very much like today.

The debacle in Iran was an attempt to resolve a conflict absent war. An effort for peace is something macho morons of today consider quaint, but there wasn’t a war, was there?

As for the Carter and the Olympics, it was a doomed gesture, but again, no one died. Reagan made American feel good, but he also made imperialism and violence a virtue again, hardly commendable.

I’d trade Carter for Bush all day every day. No comparison.

PS Of all the faith based, truly uneducated, mythology, used to condemn Carter in this thread, this comment wins the award (but there were many almost equally as stupid):

“When asked about the low pay for enlisted military members he advised that they should apply for food stamps and other social services to supplement their income.”

It’s hard to believe that there is still anyone this brainless in America today, but obviously there is. Bush has destroyed, as in ruined the military. He has done damage that will take generations to repair, if we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity.

It is pathetic that people still can’t see past the lies they’ve been fed, there really is no hope. The American public is like a bunch of abused wives who believe their abusers promises to stop, even as he plummets them senseless.

Anonymous said...

borkafatty, yeah....I do believe everything I wrote, mainly because I was old enough to remember what a sorry son of a bitch Carter was (I was 9 when he went in, 13 when he left). Ask anyone old enough to remember that time, and they'll tell you the same things.

I don't care how many Peace Prizes he racks up or how much he did for Habitat. It can't possibly make up for the screwing over he did to America during his term.

Bush sucks, but even on his worst day he was better than Carter on his best. And that's freaking pathetic.

-------------------
And to the truly "ignorant douchebag" @ 3:25.....yeah, I did hear about "arms for hostages".

I also heard about the catastrophically screwed up Delta Force mission, and saw the Iranians display the charred wreckage of the helicopters on the evening news.

Double digit inflation started under Nixon. He tried voluntary wage and price controls. That didn't work. Inflation continued under Ford. He tried to fix it by handing out WIN buttons (whip inflation now). Needless to say that did nothing. Carter finally fixed it by putting someone in the fed (Volker) who had the courage to raise interest rates high enough to halt inflation.
The gas lines were because of the arab oil embargo which was mostly due to our support of Israel. Carter could have ended the embargo by throwing Israel under the bus but he didn't. I guess you Carter bashers would have turned your back on an ally rather then wait in line for gas.
Carter wouldn't give in to any of Irans demands in the hostage situation. Reagan kissed their butts and gave them what they wanted (weapons). Carter bashers seem to think doing the easy thing is better then doing the right thing.

jimmy carter's problem is that he is a nice man, who really actually cares about people and who wants to do the right thing. he is a real person. that being said , he has swam in the sewer called washington dc and he understands who has the power and who doesn't and in order to survive there, he had to at least, behave as they wanted him to in many respects. for this i cannot blame him. he wanted peace in the middle east but the jews would not allow this to happen and when he said that the jews were the cause of the problem in the middle east, in his recent book , that he wrote, he of course brought on himself , the whining of the yid set, complaining that he was not fair for daring to say such things....yada yada yada...

That’s working out real well in Saudi Arabia, isn’t it? Oh yeah, we have to pretend it was Afghanistan who attacked on 9/11. Or is it Iraq who we have hate for 9/11? It doesn't matter, soon it will be Iran. When the next war starts the same suckers who have bought every lie so far will jump on that bandwagon as well, they just can’t learn.

What is most telling about the knuckle draggers here is they don’t have a single argument past the simple-minded talking points they puke back out. Once they’re shot down on the facts, they retreat. Just like their owners, they are just too stupid to solve a problem, so they attack.

- When Carter was president, you got pay raises and bank returns to match actual inflation.

Anonymous said...

You're right on the mark with that statement.

Unlike Bush, Carter was, and is, a humanitarian for the people -something the Bush's don't care anything about.

Carter did the best he could with the mess he inherited.

The last 7 years have been the worst for this country - period.

Those who would argue against this need only experience history as it plays out in the years to come.

There is no difference between the two parties now, they are both only too self-serving to have any interest or even a clue what real working people have to do to make a *decent* living in this country now - and it's going to get alot tougher.

America sadly encourages the entitlement system, where a few enjoy the riches (left) of the earth, while the rest should be more than satisfied with scraps.

Has anybody considered the fact that it takes years for the economy to have the effect of the current president. We are feeling some effects of the Clinton Administration, as well as some of Bush. The Carter Administration cannot be blamed for everything, you also have to look at the crooked Nixon/Ford years as well. The next president, and i feel for them, they are going to get screwed, and blamed for all our problems that will come to play. I believe our next president, as good as they may be, will be a one term president, and take all the heat for the Bush administration.

Second issue....I used to like this blog, as i believe the housing meltdown is happening, and is a crisis. However i'm tired of the Democrat bashing. After 8 years of this GOP president....who wants to vote GOP?? I'm not saying Democrat is a perfect choice...but look at the GOP choices. If Ron Paul had made the nomination, i would vote for him...but the other guys forget it. So can we just keep this blog on topic, not bash other presidents, and other times. As time has a way of distorting history in our minds, and concentrate on whats happening now.

borkafatty, yeah....I do believe everything I wrote, mainly because I was old enough to remember what a sorry son of a bitch Carter was (I was 9 when he went in, 13 when he left). Ask anyone old enough to remember that time, and they'll tell you the same things.

==============

BINGO!

Anyone in their late 30s or older remembers what a piece of shit Carter was. Anyone under that age has been brainwashed by the media into thinking Carter is a cool dude who builds homes for the poor.

Ronald Reagan wiped his ass with Carter and then wiped his ass with Carter's VP Mondale 4 years later winning 49 states. People at that time knew what a disaster Carter had been. They sent a message loud and clear that they wanted nothing to do with him or anyone associated with him ever again.

All you 24 year old bleeding hearts, read a history book or two. Oh and don't worry as you age you become less stupid. When I was 24 I thought liberal thinking made sense too.

As Churchill said if you're conservative at 20 you have no heart. If you're liberal at 40 you have no brain. Still true today.

Nothing makes one look more douchebag like than using improper grammar when pointing out the lack of smartness in someone else.

And yes, smartness is a word.

Any well-informed observer has now been adequately forewarned, that the intention for the 2008 Presidential campaign, by certain very powerful international financial interests, is the election of a man-on-a-white-horse, New York City's Mayor Bloomberg, to become what historians would describe with a shudder as the American Mussolini dictatorship (or, perhaps, even worse) of January 2009.

The intention of the super-wealthy financial parasites largely controlling the campaigns, is to play each candidate, such as Chicago's patsy Obama, against the others in ways intended to ensure that by early March 2008, the electoral potential of the presently leading candidates would have been sufficiently scrambled by the financial manipulators, that the road would have been cleared for the coming of a tyrant on a billionaire's personal, financial "white horse."

To understand how such a nightmarish threat as that could have come upon us, we must explore the evolution of a movement which came to be known as "the 68ers," from a white-collar generation spawned in the U.S.A., Europe, and relevant other locations during the interval 1945-1958.

=================================
But we still had industry into the 1970's.
This current period 1990-2008 is the worst period in US History. To top it off it is a world mismanaged by "baby boomers", those "test tube" babies from the 1940's and 1950's.

I will plan to party too. I guess people on this board were just too young to remember. I didn't understand back then why we didn't get medieval on Iran but I do now. Carter was simply an implementor(like hillary, she even admits it) and not a thinker/creator. If you take hostages from our embassy you should expect our army to lay waste to your country. But Carter did nothing for a year and a half.

January 16, 2008 5:27 PM

Yeah, right. Then when the Soviet Union launched their nukes you have a world laid to waste. Remember the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction?

Rewriting history? It more appears that someone else was autofellating rather than learning their history.

What happened less than 10 minutes after Reagan was inaugurated? What did the Iranians get? Who brokered the deal? Yeah, the Iranians were so afraid of Reagan that we gave them arms.

Everyone, please note, the Cold War was limited to the Years 1981-1989.

And, finally, not a liberal.

Just like their owners, they are just too stupid to solve a problem, so they attack.

this is one reason why a man like ron paul will never be elected president. the sheeple do not understand what he is saying. he speaks truths about the economy and economic policies that need to be said but most people do not understand what he is saying and then you have to ask yourself why. why is it the sheeple do not understand him? simple. it is a sign of the times. he is a man born in the wrong century speaking to people who cannot comprehend what he says because they were meant not to understand by plan. so far the plan is working. but , and that is a big but, there are those who will not bow the knee to the coming new world and like the arabs, we too shall resist and if the new world order mercenary armies think that iraq was easy....well you have no idea...

Carter may have been a competent peanut farmer but he was a disaster as a president, completely unqualified for the job. He seems to be a decent person though and he didn't get us into another quagmire, no win war during his presidency.
Bush not only qualifies as the president with the lowest IQ... probably somewhere in the moron range... but is also blatantly dishonest and arrogant to boot. I would believe absolutely nothing he says.
But what have we got to look forward to? Look at the presidential campaign now in progress. With the exception of Ron Paul, it's a media freak show of more liars, traitors, and incompetents. In last nights Democratic "debate" Obama was really kissing Hillary's ass. So, my prediction is a "back room" deal has been done and Obama will be Hillery's VP running mate. A real match made in hell.

Here is the Truth about Reagan and Carter and why both Parties are equal horses asses:
Reagan: Lowered the marginal tax rate for his rich buddies and:
1) raised the social security Tax
2) eliminated the deduction of interest for credit cards, car loans and personal loans
3) gave amnesty to illegal aliens
4) started deficit spending like a drunken sailor(apologies to druken sailors)
5) brought in policies that led to the S&L crises
6) Larry Kudlow and Art Laffer supply side voodoo economics.

Carter:
1) essentially allowed for the Shah to be overthrown and the Ayatollah to take over
2) gas lines for the second time. Do you know how long we had to wait to buy gas and were limited to 10 gallons even and odd days (license plate numbers) great excuse you could be late for work every other day.
3) Policies led to stagflation and the misery index (combo of unemployment and inflation)
4) hard to find employment started decline of middle class money became tighter etc.
5) Billy Carter and Billy Beer on the bright side Hamilton Jordan did see the Egyptian Ambassadors wife's pyramids

Imagine 10%+ real unemployment. Imagine taking a friendly pro-USA middle east country and HELOING install a radical islamic anti-USA government. Imagine Billy Carter in the news...

_____

He WAS horrific. He thought we should all hang our heads in shame for being Americans.

That man had no sense of perspective or proportion, and was a pathological micromanager. As President, he PERSONALLY MANAGED the White House tennis court schedule! That's just sad.

The economy WAS very sick during his presidency and some of us won't ever forget that.

Carter got rid of pull tabs on beer cans and saved perhaps millions of people.

Reagan was truly evil and actively encouraged people to throw their plastic 6-pack holders into the country's waterways. Reagan also did away with paper garbage bags and gave subsidies to manufacturers of tall kitchen garbage bags, which prior to his election, were wholly unknown. The sheeple then began specifically purchasing tall kitchen garbage bags for the sole purpose of throwing them away.

Anonymous said...

The Carter haters rely on emotional arguments, perhaps because they don't have facts.

How about that point above? How many of the people who hate Carter bailed out on housing in time?

How many of the Bushophiles still hold mortgages?

Come on guys, it's a simple question. How about this? I'll answer first.

Bush makes Carter look like a managerial God. That obviously means, I sold in December '05 and happily rent a $550,000 house for $1,500 a month. My landlord feels lucky to have me, and he is.

You should know better than to blame Carter for the economic catastrophe created by Nixon.

Just like Bush is spending our money to push the catastrophe he created past January and onto the next president, Nixon did the same thing. he sank us with Viet Nam, and then left Ford and Carter to take the heat.

The same will happen to whoever wins in November.

The first test tube baby was born in 1978...if you didn't know that, what validity does your statement have that 1990-2008 is the worst period in U.S history? IMO it was during the Revolution, or the Civil War...brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor, fighting to the death, but that's JMHO and you're entitled to yours.
