Because of the Iraq debacle, the housing bubble and The Fed's deceptive behavior, has the world lost trust in America (and the dollar) for good?

Trust is one of the hardest things to earn and one of the easiest things to lose.

Because of Ben Bernanke's desperate, deceitful and damaging actions a few days ago that purposefully destroyed the US dollar (and holders of US debt), combined with the Greenspan Fed's reckless bubble-inflating stupidity that caused this worldwide credit and housing bubble to form, and combined with The Worst President Ever's horrific performance these past six years...

Has the world now simply lost trust in the United States of America, its currency, its government, its auditors, its regulators and its financial institutions?

(note to HP US readers - yes, seeing the American flag upside down, an internationally recognized
symbol of distress, should upset you. But seeing what's happened to our country, our financial system and our currency should be even more upsetting. The image is not one of disrespect. It is one of distress)

Stupid Americans - the flag worship is one of the worst things about that country. (I can't believe Keith felt the need to put that disclaimer in the article). To a foreigner, the US flag worship is reminiscent of Nazi Germany. Do you think all those Nazi flag wavers thought their flag represented an evil empire before (or even during) the full scale atrocities? I'm not saying that the US is anything like Nazi germany, but people should look suspiciously at the flag wavers and at least question whether unbridled patriotism and unquestioning allegiance to the king/president is bad for the country.

For the last time Keith ... Jimmy Carter was the worst president ever (and the worst ex-president too). George W. Bush is a pretty darned bad president, but not the worst - that title goes to Jimmuh.

There is still Nicolas Sarkozy who trusts and admires the US. But anybody else? I don't think so - not even his wife who refuses to see G.W.Bush

Let's see...

The median price for Moscow residential estates is $4000 per square meter.
The average price of a modest two-bedroom flat in a Soviet-era block is (45 sq.m * $4000) = $180k.
The size of a dollar note is around 0.15 by 0.07 meters.
Given a 2.5-meter ceiling, a bedroom size of 3 x 5 meters and a 6-meter hallway (a conservative assumption), the surface area of walls - excluding bathroom and kitchen - is 2.5*(2*2*(3+5)+2*6) = 110 square meters.

110/(0.15*0.07) = 10476.19

CONCLUSION: it only takes $10477 (6.54% of purchase price) to wallpaper a Moscow flat with $1 notes. $209540 if you prefer twenties.

With the dollar hitting record lows every day you don't even have to ask the question the answer is YES

Anonymous said...

In a word...YES

In a sentence...It has.

In a paragraph.

I look at the world like the Mafia. You have all of these families are a part of the "organization" (the U.N.). There are codes and rules to follow and when one gets too out of line the other families have a secret meeting to discuss how to get rid of the "problem". I think there is a "meeting" about to take place and the US hasn't been invited this time.

I disagree that this poll is meaningless because of the potential lack of intelligence by respondents. I agree that most people these days are morons, but the fact that even they are so discountent with what's happening is proof that the "leadership" - at all levels - of this country is so far off the path of what is right for the county.

The coup de grace will be the marxist Democrat takeover next November.

60% top marginal rates (to start), trial lawyers and regulators unleashed on politically targeted industries and a "populist" anti-trade pro-union agenda will finish the dollar for good. The "safe haven" benefits that draw capital from the developing world (and finance our deficits) will reverse- there is no safe haven against populists/marxists other than hiding your money outside the US.

Remember that FDR didn't solve the depression (the catclysm of WWII ultimately did), but helped perpetuate it for 9 years with a general war on "the rich" and business.

Ronald Reagan ushered in the end of cooperation and the beginning of savagery. Since that time the cesspool we call the USA has achieved little technologically. What little we do achieve are things like lifetestyle drugs, new plastic surgery techniques and better ways to kill people.
Our infrastructure is a joke compared to the rest of the world and continues to decline further each year.
Huge tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations drastically decreased investment in the culture and we have progressed down the path towards a white trash society. "Public is bad and private is good" in the minds of these selfish miscreants which means public investment is ridiculed and neglected.

I said this years ago: We're on the path towards a South American style culture where 5% have it all and everyone else barely gets by. Where corruption is not only tolerated, it's encouraged. Where the credo is, "get as much as you can, all that you can and don't give a second thought to how negatively it affects anyone else."

Conservatives are truly ignorant people who live for nothing but the thought what they can pick up at the mall next weekend. Many are doing far worse than they would under the "Marxist" liberals but prefer to delude themselves that if they back conservatives they'll get all their taxes back to spend at the mall. After all, 99% of their taxes went to lazy black people on welfare, right?

Good quote from the article Keith linked to on this thread

"Greed and corruption have been exposed for being endemic to so many levels within America’s economy. Who is to say that even U.S. government bonds more closely resemble subprime mortgages than their conventional reputation as a safe investment?

The world is approaching an end of an era. America’s moral collapse now lies exposed to all—a virtual death sentence to an economic system based on trust. Confidence lost, America’s reputation as a financial safe haven is being replaced with subprime status—and as foreigners have found out, subprime risks just aren’t worth it."

I always get a kick out of the posters here who blame Democrats or Republicans for the nation's ills. I swear you folks must be no older that 20. You are in for a world of disappointment if you think having either one of those parties in office will right the ship.

My personal theory is that the real downhill slide began when we became a net oil importer and subsequently reached our peak oil production. No, I'm not trying to turn this all into a peak oil discussion. You just have to believe that as corporations realized we could no longer supply ourselves with cheap energy, they needed to diversify their interests away from the USA.

That is what has been happening for a long time now. Investment in the USA has been shifted to investment in other parts of the world. Corporations lobby and buy our Republican and Democrat governments to help them do this through globalization.

This is what you often see typed as the hollowing out of America. That's it. We have used our resources and now the corporations need to plow onto greener pastures.

Republican or Democrat...please.

4.) We lost the Iraq and Afgan war
5.) Inflation to the moon
6.) Destruction of the Middle Class
7.) Oil at 5 bucks a gallon by end of 2008.
8.) The whole world sees the U.S. as monkeys since were run by monkeys
9.) Just vetoed health care for children that would cost 30 billion, yet his asking for another 190 billion for a war that has been lost. Incredible!
10.) THE HOUSING BUBBLE!

Where? Just where would Every other country be if it wasn't for the U.S., saving their collective asses in WWII.

It's this brainwashed type of thinking by American inbreds that's hurting the country. They think that there's always a noble cause behind US actions around the world. This country has caused more damage than good, and there's always self-interest in everything it does. Do you really think that there was a noble cause behind the Vietnam, Iraq, or Korean wars? It's always special interest lead by idiotic secret society types that manipulate this government. Now you add to that the Israeli rogue Mossad types to the party, along with their Israeli partners in crime who lobby the corrupt American Senate. The US and its CIA was behind every episode of military coup (including torture techniques) in Central and South America to place puppets in command, which took those regions back 50 years. The same thing they did in Iran and, now, after Iran removed CIA's puppet Sha to establish free elections, that country is out of the sudden a threat to democracy. The same CIA and American government that backed Sadam, Osama, Taliban, Noriega, etc.

So you keep waving that sheeple flag in front of the porch while spinning the hamster wheel because they are not done with your wallet yet. Giuliani wants a piece of the action, by scaring you all to death that bogeyman terrorist is under your beds. The shady groups that control this government got you where they wanted. Meanwhile, our almighty dollar is worth sh!t.

Could you sheeple, please make an effort to wake up before you destroy this country for good? Please, just a little effort to learn history that's not fed to you by this corrupt government and MSM.

Oh, and one more thing, the Scandinavian countries are more philanthropic and provide more aid to other countries in distress, as a percentage of its overall population, than the US. So let's put that myth aside which the US is the mother Theresa of the world.

"Whatever our problems are, that flag should be facing upright. Upside down is not a sign of distress, it is a sign of disrespect."

Don't be a useless twit. The inverse flag has always been a distress signal.
Learn some history. Learn something about that flag you worship.

P.S. The flag is a symbol, just some cloth and dye.

The oath of office is NOT

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Flag of the United States."

Nor is it

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Citizens of the United States."

It is

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Think about it.

I don't think you should take this Hamid Varzi author so seriously. After all he is IRANIAN. Based in Tehran.

Loss of confidence in the US Dollar is the/a stated objective of the Tehran government. The iranians have been working towards that goal and, in this shadowy form of economic warfare being fought between Iran and the US, you have to expect some small successes at least from both sides.

Iran's small success is some devaluing of the dollar brought about by the US's own mistakes. And getting their oil sold in euros instead of the dollar.

Before taking this Iranian joker too seriously, try and critically examine the state of the Iranian economy. It's a shambles. It even makes Detroit look good by comparison.

We should be concerned about excessive debt but take a more critical look at the messenger.

And some investigation / prosecution of those that perpetrated the mortgge & bond rating frauds is in order.

The US is 19th in per capita foreign aid. And if the conservatives had their way we'd give nothing. It's always funny to see cons bragging about our generosity when they HATE IT.

PS. The dems have been out of power for the better part of 30 YEARS. Conservatism has reigned over this decline. Dems have had less than a YEAR to improve things and have to fight the ignorance of the republicans and the idiot fratboy prez. They don't rule with much of a majority.

But they WILL in 2008. If there is a housing crash as deep as we think, look for lots of socialistic policies. If I were rich I'd be investing in lots of security.

It's funny how Americans are quick to defend their flag (which is just a symbol) but don't realise that their Constitution (which is really what defines the US) has been butchered and ignored by the US government.

Americans think that simply being born within the borders of America defines a person as being American. I think a far more powerful idea is that Americans are defined by their commitment to the US Constitution. The US Constitution is what made the US the great country it *was*. Ignoring the Constitution is what is destroying the US now.

What was that flag supposed to mean in the upright position?
I won't ever fly "that Flag" uside down ,I will ignore it.
America is the Promise, not the US.
Presidents,Congressmen,Judges etc. have hidden behind that thing for decades. The Promise will never come from, nor be fullfilled by the US.American men ,and women (you, and your neighbors?)are the only ones who can keep the promise.

WHATS WRONG WITH ALL THESE PEOPLE ON HERE. WE MUST ASSUME NOW THAT ALL THE ACTIONS ARE ON THEIR COURSE NOW AND CANNOT STOP THE INEVITABLE. WE MUST NOW START PLANNING HOW WE ARE GOING TO REGAIN WHAT WE HAVE LOST.

THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND I AM STILL PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE FAILED US AND THE SYSTEM ISNT WORKING BUT WE MUST START DRAWING UP SOLUTIONS FOR OUR FUTURE. WE WILL NOT JUST SIT BACK AND BE DEPRESSED AND POINT FINGERS AT WHO DID WHAT. WE ARE THE GENERATION THAT CAN TURN THINGS AROUND, WE HAVE THE RESOURCES, MINDPOWER, AND INFRASTRUCTURE (MILITARY ETC.) TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. WE MUST DEVELOP A STRONG LEADERSHIP IN THIS SOCIETY.
WE MUST IMPOSE THE CONSTITUTION, WE MUST REVIVE OURSELVES AS THE MANUFACTURING SUPERPOWER. WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER AND HELP EACH OTHER BECOME GREAT AGAIN. IF THERE IS ONE COUNTRY IN THE WHOLE WORLD THAT CAN DO THIS IT WOULD BE THE UNITED STATES. ITS GOING TO TAKE HARD WORK, DETERMINATION, AND A DESIRE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS FEAT BUT IT CAN BE DONE. OUR RELATIVES ARE TURNING IN THEIR GRAVES FOR SEEING HOW UNDIVIDED, GREEDY, EFFORTLESS,
AND CLOSE MINDED MANY PEOPLE HAVE BECOME.

There are about 200 countries on earth. Yet all of you still live in this one. Why? If it is so damn awful here, leave.

You are the one who should leave. We are the only ones trying to fix your idiotic mess to save this country. Better yet, go to fight in Iraq along with your children and relatives, while the soldiers come back. Stay there fighting, nobody here will miss you, I guarantee.

By next week Friday (10/12/07) the Dollar will already have turned a corner

as clear as housing prices are going down to normal, Dollar values are up to normal.

"Better yet, go to fight in Iraq along with your children and relatives, while the soldiers come back. Stay there fighting, nobody here will miss you"

And the problem is that this story's now a re-tread. When I was a kid, cerca 1979, it was the same anecdote...

Vet gets into a taxi and says... "I just got back from Vietnam" and the cab driver was like, "so what, so what".

Things really don't change.
