What community in CA wouldn't listen to the developer, telling the citizenry of their beautiful town that it is SPECIAL? It simply needs a high-rise architectural masterpiece as it's crowning jewel (which so happens to bear the developer's name)?
No one sees parallels between a schemer telling River City, IA, they need a band, and this kind of thing? Charlatans, scammers?
FWIW, Bakersfield had a similar episode with a local wanna-be developer/real estate agent, who wanted to develop a 32-story tower in town. He actually did nothing more than get himself and a whole lot of his 'believers' into debt, creating a real estate empire that's now folding. He got the CSUB Board of Trustees to back him, now much to their embarrassment, no doubt.
I'm not sure if the FBI will be getting involved with him for mortgage fraud, but the IRS has placed liens against his property for failing to pay income taxes in 2005. That's not good....
