Pigs Fly Alert: USAToday front page story exposes $59 Trillion US Debt ($516,000 per household)

Man, the MSM is going HP it looks like. We've been screaming about this issue forever, and I do believe this is the very first MSM article that I've seen.

Meanwhile, do Americans even care? I think when you say "$59 Trillion" people's eyes gloss over. What's on America's Top Model?

It's sickening that our government so blatantly deceives us, and the MSM goes along for the ride. Bravo to Dennis Cauchon at the USAToday for doing his job. Too bad it's too late, and too bad his MSM peers are so pathetically incompetent.

Folks, we're either going to have to go insolvent, cancel entitlement programs, or print dollars like Wiemar Germany to get out of this mess.

Taxpayers on the hook for $59 trillion
By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY

The federal government recorded a $1.3 trillion loss last year — far more than the official $248 billion deficit — when corporate-style accounting standards are used, a USA TODAY analysis shows.

The loss reflects a continued deterioration in the finances of Social Security and government retirement programs for civil servants and military personnel. The loss — equal to $11,434 per household — is more than Americans paid in income taxes in 2006.

"We're on an unsustainable path and doing a great disservice to future generations," says Chris Chocola, a former Republican member of Congress from Indiana and corporate chief executive who is pushing for more accurate federal accounting.

Modern accounting requires that corporations, state governments and local governments count expenses immediately when a transaction occurs, even if the payment will be made later.

The federal government does not follow the rule, so promises for Social Security and Medicare don't show up when the government reports its financial condition.

Bottom line: Taxpayers are now on the hook for a record $59.1 trillion in liabilities, a 2.3% increase from 2006. That amount is equal to $516,348 for every U.S. household. By comparison, U.S. households owe an average of $112,043 for mortgages, car loans, credit cards and all other debt combined.

BALANCE DUE
The cost per U.S. household of unfunded promises made by federal, state and local government:

Medicare
$255,280

Social Security
$144,251

Federal debt
$43,380

Military benefits
$25,863

State and local debt
$17,537

Federal civil- servant benefits
$14,374

State and local retiree benefits
$13,114

Other federal obligations
$2,548

Total
$516,348

How easy is it to renounce your US citizenship?

"How easy is it to renounce US citizenship?"

It became extremely difficult some years ago. When I became a Canadian in 1978, it was nearly impossible to keep your US citizenship if you pledged allegiance to a non-US person (e.g. Queen Elizabeth II). I don't know when they did the 180 degrees.

john m you missed the question pal, it is very easy to renounce citizenship. what's hard is keeping dual citizenship. what you communists want is the cake and the eating. you want to flee the country but keep the US passport, just in case. sorry communists, that's not how it works.

HUH? But I thought everyone owed $500,000 in mortgages alone, alog with $100,000 in Hummer/Escalade debt.

You mean to tell me on $112K in debt per household, while the value of a median house is $220,000? Sounds pretty good to me.

Whats somewhat funny/sad are the Bush war supporters that say we can't leave Iraq until we win, like it was a football game or something.

WIN ONE FOR THE GIPPER!!!

If it was coming directly out of there pocket I doubt very much they'd be saying that. But every dollar spent over there is a dollar borrowed from somewhere else.

This position where we have to be the world's policemen is ONE of the most shortsighted, moronic, concepts imaginable.

But hey, make money out of thin air or borrow it what do Americans care just so long as they can drive a tank and have lots of toys to play with? Oh yes and live in a giant shitbox 50 miles from work.

My proposal:

Raise retirement age in 2015 by 1 year. Raise retirement age in 2016 by 1 year.

Roll back bush tax cuts on the wealthy.

Leave Iraq.

National tax on junk food, fuel ineffiecient vehicles.

Do other things.

Roll back bush tax cuts on the wealthy.

--------------------------------

Could you elaborate on who this "wealthy" creature is? Only the top 50% pay income tax to begin with so by definition anyone who pays tax is in the top 1/2 of the income chart. Of that 50%, the top 10% pays 67% of all taxes meaning slobs like you making $12 an hour pay $0 taxes, get all the benefits of taxes and yet have the balls to complain about the "wealthy" paying too little in tax.

Go fuck yourself.

Anonymous said...

So the answer to this "crisis" according to Keith and his fellow socialists is......vote for Democrats who will spend even more.

Great plan guys.

But the republicans say that the tax cuts worked. They say we have even more revenue, not less.

Keep voting republican out there. Selfishness is the key to a first rate society.

Dude - you are comparing the absolute numbers of debt of one country vs another. You have to take in account things like population and GDP. Absolute numbers are meaningless for comparing countries or anything else financially. It is like saying I am richer/poorer than Donald Trump based on debt - without any knowledge of assets or cash flow. Or that Bob’s Computer Fix it Store is much better than Apple Computer.

Now look where that has been done for as debt/GDP here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_public_debt

You will notice the USA is well below Japan, Germany and France based on debt/GDP. When you add in that the average American household income is nearly double that of the Europeans, that we have less than half of the unemployment, that we have much less generous socialistic programs and that we a much greater fertility rate - we are also in a much better position to service that debt.

And as for “Europe is better than America in so many ways it's hard to count them” – I am assuming you are talking of the remaining Christian areas of Europe. Before long in Europe, some like you (infidel) will be prohibited from buying alcohol, prohibited from buying/eating pork, prohibited looking/talking to any women, prohibited from eating at all during the day at Ramadan, etc. It will be lovely though, going to mosque and praying 5 times a day (and if you don’t – you will be beaten or killed).

Sure, revenue increased. The economy grows every year. But when Clinton raised taxes, revenues increased even faster. The latest recovery is the shallowest we've ever seen.

You republicans have never been able to make economic alchemy work, meaning creating revenue from tax cuts. That's why the deficits and debt climb exponentially when republicans are in control.

Isn't it funny that we had our strongest period of WIDESPREAD growth and prosperity when the top tax rate was 90% (post WW2 to the 70s)? Seems like we've been on a downward spiral ever since Raygun (may he burn in Hell) cut the taxes so dramatically.

Care to explain that republican'ts?

I think it's pretty easy to renounce your US citizenship, but I believe the IRS will often keep after you to continue to pay US income taxes even after you do this! At least, this was sometimes the case in the past. Of course, the huge promises made to the American people for future benefits will have to be defaulted on in some manner, but the politicians will continue to purchase votes from the stupid and ignorant with more promised benefits. It is nice to finally see some information about this problem in a major paper. And, the Comptroller of the Currency, whatever his name is I don't remember and don't feel like looking up just now, has been talking about this problem and was on "60 Minutes" a few weeks ago. Future benefits can and will be modified or defaulted, as there aren't enough people on earth to provide all the promises that Americans have promised to themselves. The honest way to do this would be to lower the stars and strips and replace it with the "don't tread on me" flag and just admit the the United States is done and gone...just start over with a new country. I'd suggest going back to the Articles of Confederation and patching it up a little...like the constitutional convention was supposed to do before they got carried away and wrote the far inferior constituion of the US. A little patching and the Articles of Confederation would make for a much freer federal government.

Anonymous said...

The debt became meaningless when the $ became no longer tied to gold. Does the US owe China $1 billion? No problem, crank up the currency printing presses. Here's your $1 billion $. Thanks for playing.

Do we owe Japan some cash too? Oh, no problem, crank up the printing presses. There ya go.

See how it works now?

Gotta send the retirees their social security? No problem, crank up the printng presses. There's your check.

and so forth and so on.

By the way, GDP is not a good measure of a countries economic health. It only measures activity no matter how insignificant. I hand you a dollar, you hand it back, I hand it back, you hand it back. There, lots of activity.

But nothing was really done. Europeans don't live to spend money, in fact, the savings rate in Europe approaches 15% whereas here it is nearly in the minus territory. That's why their GDPs are smaller. Oh, and I read that in the Wall Street Journal. Have they been taken over by Moveon.org?

Like I said, inflation was bad way before Carter. All reagan did to slow it was to throw 11 million people out of work.

I knew a guy at the peak of the 90s that had just a GED who was making 100k working in an IS dept. He let go as soon as it was apparent that the bubble had burst, now he works in a local mom/pop computer store.

Hell I'll buy you a 1-way ticket myself and pay for any legal costs associated with renouncing your citizenship.

I want to take you up on your offer. How do I contact you? I'm serious. I'm ready to go.

Wow! Great battle of words going on. I quiver to think of "President Guiliani." Is this where we are heading folks? This script is a mirror image of NAZI Germany in the 30's. I don't care if you are a Republican or Democrat. The United States of America is heading over a cliff in real time.

The only person who can be so stupid as to think that the Carter presidency was better than Reagan's is someone who was not alive then or was in a hash den.

All spending bills are approved by Congress, and who was in charge of the House for most of Clinton's term- Newt Gingrich. There is no way Clinton could have spent as much as he wanted to, or his constituencies would have wanted him to.

I think you are always going to be a bitter renter. And make sure you dont leave any holes in the walls or paint, or you'll lose your deposit.

So what expelains the out of control spending in the last 6 years that the republicans had total control? You know, the period that exploded the deficits and the debt?

Dumb f*cking republicans. Always looking to blame others. The truth is that the reason republicans are more often in the minority is because their policies guided by selfishness, greed and ignorance gave us bad times like when they gave us the Great Depression. That was the last time they ruled for a long time, 30 years prior to the Depression which resulted in them dropping to 20% of Congress. We should have gassed them to hell then as a warning to future generations of conservatives.
