where is this picture from? I filled up today for $2.82. keith you are starting to sound a lot like the hysterical MSM when it comes to gas prices....well actually you sound like the MSM a lot these days come to think of it.
Those prices are unique to a single Shell station whose owner is protesting against the company's heavy-handed business practices. He was upset that they kept raising his rent, so he jacked up prices and is basically waiting to go out of business. He owns several other stations, so it's not a big deal to him.
Gas is still expensive, though, and probably will hit $4 per gallon before summer ends.
It's about $3.40 - $3.60 for the 87 grade gas in my part of SD.
I ride the motorcycle to work these days, so I'm hoping for $5.00/gal. this year.
As an XOM shareholder I say bring that shit on. Do I hear $5 gas? $6?
Frank, if you're going to swagger please enlist and spend a few tours of duty in Iraq.

(As a former Californian) I want to personally thank the citizens of CA for having subsidized, and continuing to subsidize, lower gas prices in the other 49 States with your much higher gas prices.

Of course, I drive a Prius 15 minutes to work. Today I got 52 mpg. When the warranty expires, I might look into adding some batts to up that to 100 mpg.
honestly, with my daily commute less than 8 miles one way (~1 gallon a day) I can handle $20-25 per gallon. Though, I paid a premium for the Real Estate 5 years ago, which now looks like a bargain - everything I need is in about 10 min walking distance...

That's a famous gas station in SF. It's 70 cents a gallon more expensive than the station across the street and nobody buys any gas there. The owner of the station is doing it to protest shell's policies in regard to independent owners and is planning to go out of business.
Isn't it odd that some people complain about $3.50 per gallon gas, but they think nothing of paying $6 to $12 per gallon for bottled water?

The news article in the San Francisco Chronicle quotes the station owner as saying that he raised the price to $.70 above his competitors across the street, not to make a profit, but to make a statement to the oil company. He is ticked off at Shell.

First, I don't know where you get your bottled water from, but I pay about $0.25 for a 1 pint bottle (name-brand spring water), or about 2.00 a gallon.
Second, these comparisons of the price per gallon of gasoline to the price per gallon of milk, water, pepto bismol, cough syrup, etc. are rather inane since we consume far more gasoline on a daily basis than we do any of the others.

I'm sure time is valuable to both of you too, since you need all the time you can get to call subprime lenders and beg them to refi you.

I drive a large SUV. I like it because it comfortable, smooth ride, fits a lot of gear for when I go camping/kayaking/skiing, it can to my boat, 4x4 so I'm good to go in snow and I like knowing that in a crash with a Prius I'll come out just fine. Now if someone came out with the same SUV that also got 30 MPG, I'd get one in a second. Until then I'm not going to drive a tiny, unsafe, uncomofortable econobox just to save $10 a week in gas.
And for the holier than thou subway users, please stop. The subway in the summer is one of the circles of hell in DC, NY, Boston. Nobody in their right mind prefers the subway, they do it out of necessity and the fact they can't afford to drive/park.

I think that picture should be saved. the owner of that station is doing that to piss off shell but one day soon, those prices will be reality.
I am heavily invested on energy stocks for about two years. Enjoyed the ride so far. Good news keeps coming in.

Frank, you are *scary* stupid:
1. $8 gas?
2. What's an S550? Is that like a Yugo or something? I'm not a car buff - but if an S550 is some sort of high-end car, don't kid yourself Frank - the ladies (and fags) smiling at you in the other lane are actually laughing at you.

And when I sold my house in the Bay Area and left the State, I paid cash (ie. no mortgage) for a new, slightly larger home with a real yard after more than doubling my money on the sale of the CA house.

I was in Europe in 1986 and gas was already over $5/gallon. They encourage conservation thru high taxation on gas.
Most people walk, ride bikes or use public transportation.

Since when is $550 a month for a car high? $20K over 3 years is $550 a month and for $20K you get a Honda Civic or some other rinky dink piece of tin.
If you like and can afford a big SUV then more power to you. I had a Ford Bronco and loved it and now I have a Honda Fit and love it. I guess it is a shift in beliefs and priorities. What I like about a smaller car is that it really simplifies my life. Also maybe this is sexist but I can take seeing a guy in a big truck because I assume there is some nned and purpose. But the damn soccer-moms in the huge SUV's drive me bananas and I want to drive my fit under their SUV and pull the oil plug

I think owning a SUV is fine. If you keep it parked for your everyday commute, and you take it camping when you're actually camping, hauling and towing stuff and have a chance of needing 4wd.
The rest of the time, you're just needlessly funding terrorists. When Peak Oil really bites (see today's OilDrum www.theoildrum.com on the state of the largest oil field on the planet) fuel wasters will be the source of the global depression.
The hysteria about the supposed safety is far exaggerated and in large measure an insane 'arms race'. Large trucks are better in two-vehicle accidents, and worse in one-vehicle accidents. Just get a normal car with normal efficiency.
And even if you want a large car---why a SUV for the 99% of on-road use as opposed to a van or wagon? Oh yeah, just the "coolness' (????) factor. When spurious ego and fashion comes up against fundamental national security issues, screw the machismo bullshit.
