Would anyone with military background care to comment on the British hostages kissing the ring of Ahmadinejad yesterday?

Boy, did Iran sure win the propaganda battle on this one. Again.

Woof. Woof woof woof.

Wonder if any of 'em considered sucker punching the bastard? Where are heroes when we need 'em? At least there was one, a long, long time ago...

I don't have a military background, but its fairly clear from the photos that the marines among them seem to be refusing to engage in the party (despite being 'warmed up' by the Iranian guy on the far right of the picture). The sailors are obviously made of lesser stuff and clearly aren't afraid of what their mates back at barracks will say when they get back.

Still a sad scenario all around.

Small price to pay to flick him off on the plane on the way home.

I would be kissing their asses too if I was in a hostile foreign country where everyone wanted to kill me. Those soldiers know they weren't in Iranian waters, but they also know that Iranians have taken hostages in the past - for a long, long time, and it didn't always go so well for those folks. Their ass kissing got them out, and that's all that counts.

Keith, you should go sucker punch him. It is easy to talk tough from behind a computer monitor.

Let the Bombing of Iran begin.

Keith,

WTF is your problem? The sailors were, even if not technically in Iranian waters, a threat to the national security of Iran. How would the UK react if the Iranian navy had a pack of sailors off of the coast of England just outside of their waters?

As for the Holocaust denial the Iranian regime has; so what? It is every person's God given right to belive what they want. Just because the US and UK have been on a gulit trip for something they did not do does not mean the rest of the world has to be suckered into it and sympathize with the Jews. Israel should have been built in Germany to begin with. The truth is that the Europeans did not want that state in their region so the British decided to plant it elsewhere.

The Pres looks a bit like Ringo Starr. If he can play the drums, too, maybe that's why the Brits were so boggers.

First off, they should have fought them on the water or at least tried to run. An easy surrender reflects poorly on their organization. As for shaking hands: NO WAY! They were abducted on the high seas. This almost looks like Stockholm Syndrome. You just don't expect ths from military people. Remember that 6 yr old American kid who gave Saddam the cold shoulder when Saddam tried to use him for a photo-op back in 1990? 'Nuff said. For the record I am a former paratrooper US Army.

Totally agree with Anonymous, at April 05, 2007 12:31 PM

I don't understand people who get angry at troops who find themselves in such positions and do what they have to do to survive. It would be ideal if they could buck the tyrants and still make it home safely, but these are people with families at home who just want there loved ones back.

I completely agree with the policy of not negotiating with kiddnappers as it would only lead to additional kiddnapping, and maybe by gettting the soldiers to do these sort of things gets Iran a propganda boost in some eyes that could lead to other countries trying the same, but I doubt it. It also only benefited Iran because the troops were released relatively unharmed.

No big deal- it's kind of like Saddam with that little boy- yeah, the kid says everything is great, but everyone knows otherwise.

I hereby promise that if I find myself in the presence of Hitler Jr. I will indeed sucker punch the guy, then I'll give him a wedgie.

Especially if it's after I've been taken hostage by Iran, paraded like dancing monkeys in his little propaganda game, and given a free cheap suit.

Yup, I'll gladly sucker punch the guy.

Stop being such a warmonger. The last thing we need is an armed conflict with Iran. So you even understand what the conflict was about? Probably not. The British soldiers were caught in Iranian waters. The Iranians were within their legal rights to seize their ship (I imagine you would be crediting Blair if he released Iranian soldiers if the situation was reversed). If I had just come within a hairsbreath of becoming a pawn in an international situation, and the guy in charge let me go, I would be kissing him on the lips. You seem to be so open minded to the mess that the economy is, but you can't get over the decades of indoctrination and misdirection that the Media has used to paint the Middle East as lunatics, terrorists, and madmen.

Grow up.

I am outraged! And I don’t like Iran’s ‘foreign policy’
It is totally one sided
Why can’t they resolve their issue thru dialog, like we do.
The more I think about the more I Suffer.

Oh, what great day to choose suffering.

The problem with everyone that complains about the Holocaust denial is that we have been in a state of denial about the Holocaust for years. The Holocaust is a fabulous PR piece that allows Israel to maintain political power regardless of how agressively they act towards their neighbors. The Holocaust was bad, certainly that was true, but it wasn't a unique moment in human history.

The Japanese were just as bad, if not worse, than the Germans during World War II. Prison camps, forced prostitution, medical experiments on soldiers, the Rape of Nanking. All of this is glossed over in our history books (how many movies and after-school specials have been made about the Japanese atrocities?) but you can't go a month without the Holocaust (TM) being brought up.

Not to mention that it wasn't only Jews thrown into the camps. But, once again, it doesn't fit Israel and AIPAC's political agenda to have full disclosure on the Holocaust.

Dude, you're an idiot. The historic land of israel was not in Germany, nor would the suffering Jews have wanted anything more to do with the Germans after what had been done to them. Furthermore, the Palestinian mandate that the British used actually included a seperately deeded sector for the "Palestinians" (i.e. displaced Arabs kicked out of Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria - Jordan actually killed many of them)but this offer was refused - by the Arabs. In fact, Jordan/Syria/Lebaanon themselves were actually part of the defeated ottoman empire.

Then why in the world did the Brits rename Israel to Palestine and then divvy up the land by giving the Jews the short end of the stick
We may have not been in this mess today you know..
Same goes for Iraq, the Kurds ended up countryless thanks to the Brits brilliant way of divvying up their occupied lands, and unlike the Palestinians who are a mixture of Arabs from neighboring British occupied lands the Kurds are a unique peoples with a unique language

You are absolutely right that Europe as a whole needs to return all the property stolen from Jews who lived there while the Templar knights were squatting in Jerusalem.

Keyboard commando, yeah right, and you'd find yourself a one way trip on the Midnight Express. We exchanged prisoners with the USSR all the time during the cold war. No biggie.

Think the Europeans are re-thinking the pillaging of the Jewish villages that contributed in everyway to its societies plus got double and triple taxed?
To now been replaced by mobs of angry no skilled Muslims who’s ideal future is more like the archaic past.

Ha Ha ha..

It's usually some chicken shit anonof@ck that is the holocaust denier. Like the other guy/girl said, it's the arabs who have ™'d suffering for Palestinians while stabbing them repeatedly in the back. The corrupt theocrocies/tribal buffoons that are the arab nations could have ended the bullsh*t long ago. Next Islamodipsh*t nation that call for the destruction of Israel should get a serious wake up call - same for the chickensh*t anono-holocaust deniers.

When I was in the military we were taught to only give your name and ID #. You were to never to do anything that could be used as propaganda. But of course, torture or the threat of torture changes everything, or at least it changes how one views the actions of someone who is a prisoner.

It is clear from even the still photos that some of the UK servicemen were not participating in the Iranian media fest.

Keith, I really think you should try to tell the soldiers personally about how you would've done things differently if you were in their situation.

I think you’re on to something big here,
Wouldn’t surprise me if we find out the candies are Kosher, and that AIPAC had their hands in this one, my friend; nothing happens on our little Milky Way galaxy without the input of AIPAC.

There is a fascinating analysis of the conservative American mindset published by Greg Greenwald on Salon.com.

http://tinyurl.com/3ajhmd

In it he sums up neoconservative foreign policy well by saying, "they talk about every foreign policy issue with themes of dominance, submission and humiliation as the
centerpiece".

The solution to every problem, according to those like our blogmaster, is to bomb, kill, torture, intimidate, nuke or otherwise bully people into liking us or allowing us to overrun their regions and countries. People who advocate violent solutions to problems are still living the glory days of WW2 where we cooked 200,000+ Japanese women and children. They envision a day when we can destroy all those who dislike us in the Middle East, a day celebrated by tickertape parades in NYC, the returning victorious servicemen kissing their girls in Times Square just like in the pictures you can buy at the mall.

Too bad Blair has shown that diplomacy is the better path to resolving differences. Pelosi is doing the same in Syria. [Little known fact: 3 republicans also traveled to Syria last week and returned advocating diplomacy. Of course the White House ignores them.]

I encourage all to read Greenwald's analysis. And subscribe to Salon, the most intelligent news source on the Web.

I'm ex-army, when you're captured you're trained to be the grey man.
This means don't antagonise them, don't try stare them out, give them snippets of info now and again (They change any plans or codes the minute they know you're captured anyway so it's of no use to the enemy)If they want to play silly games, let them get on with it. Read "Bravo 20", the guard making Andy Macnab lick the shit off his fingers after emptying the latrine was saying to him "When this is over, I come to England and stay with you".

I thought they might have kept the 15 as human shields ala Saddam, I was pretty certain they wouldn't be executed, as every mosque, curry house and paki shop here would have been made to suffer.

I completely agree. We should have give them land, maybe some part of Italy and not to allow to have this modern artificial spartan state among Muslims (the keepers of Roman heritage when we Europeans were busy killing each other in the Middle Age.)

Hey dude, be honest:
If you’re in a war zone in the ditches, chaos of war, and you’re looking into the barrel of your enemies rifle, would He end up in ‘an orange jumpsuit, have dogs sicced on him, and then stripped naked and put in an ass pyramid?’
Nope!, you would KILL him.

Well, now it sounds like they got a little more than candies and.

Being interrogated while blindfolded and having guns cocked behind you vs an ass pyramid..... hmm. which one is worse? I think blindfolded with cocking guns is worse. Ass pyramid is humiliating but not life threatening.

It is clear to me that the US wants a war with Iran, not the other way around.

What is it that you dislike about peace and gestures of peace?

Can you put it into your mind that Iran and the US will be friends some day? What is so hard about that?

It is really up to you, Keith.
