Keith, on a more legal end of things, a renter can file a hokey complaint with the local housing authority, in a slew of states, and hold off eviction for six months or more.
That essentially allows a laid off person the chance to downsize to a cheaper apt and stretch out his savings/CCs for a real lengthy duration of time.
I believe as soon as one uses the "check's in the mail" excuse for a couple of months, the foreclosure team will be there before the end of the business quarter. So if a renter's got one year's rent saved, he can easily use the system to double it whereas a homedebtor will be upside down in no time and with little ability to stay.
Believe me, I can get any anarchist, squatter, non-payment of rent tenant out of a property in 24 hours. I've been tested many times. I offer them the easy way (walk away no fees) or the hard way. But, they all move within 24 hours. I've removed front doors with my foot, shutoff power. One of my favorites is to have their car towed. The law has no respect for a deadbeat renter in our town. You don't pay, you don't stay. Legal aid is a speed bump.

FORGET OWNERS,DEBTORS,AND RENTERS...
THE SQUATTERS JUST MIGHT BE A FAVORED CLASS IN THE EYES OF THE LAW AND WE JUST DONT KNOW IT.
Squatting is not actually against the law.
The are specific laws for squatting on the books that allow you to stay and take over a house that is just sitting there being unused by society vs. living out on the street. At least in the UK, not sure if the US has these laws or not.

In Central Florida some people built cabins, boat docks and all, right on the banks of The beautiful and undeveloped St. Johns River. The river bank land was later developed by a "single family rich" developer, but the cabins that had been there for more than seven years became the sole property of the "squatters". Who is smart, now?
A TRUE STORY
A family allowed their teenage son to plant a garden in the middle of the median on Government (County) Property. The kids in the neighborhood got into a little dispute and 5 of the kids pulled up the boys garden.
My friend now has a $1,500.00 law suit filed against him for damamge to a garden that is on government property.
Judge Judy wants them to appear on her TV Show to settle the law suite in Judge Judy Land Law.
These people tilling soil on Government Property as squatters, yet the law suite is real.
