One in seven Mexican workers have left their country and are working in the United States, an immigration study said on Tuesday.
There were more than 7 million workers from Mexico in the U.S. labor force this year, 2 million more than six years ago, said the report's author, Jeanne Batalova of the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington think tank.
Batalova said the increase in numbers had to do with economic reasons, with more immigrants looking for a better life in the United States, but also with the increased enforcement at the U.S.-Mexican border.
"It became more dangerous to cross the border, and that caused a 'lock in' effect," Batalova told Reuters in a telephone interview.
Up to 9.4 percent of the all persons born in Mexico were living in the United States in 2005, according to the report. In the same year, 14 percent of Mexican workers had jobs on U.S. soil, compared to 2.5 percent of Canadians.

I went to Walmart the other day- I rarely do and all of the products that I purchased were actually made in the U.S.- paper goods, foodstuffs and storage shelves-which were actually made in the U.S.!
In any event, I was standing in line and took a broad based look around- myself and perhaps five other people were the only white people among a veritable sea of non-english speaking latinos, whom I assume, perhaps wrongly, were mostly illegals from Mexico and central america. All this in Virginia, a state that used to be part of the Confederacy, this in a locale having a Confederate memorial not less than 5 miles away, this in the place where Robert E. Lee grew up and where roads and highways are named after Lee and Jefferson Davis.
We need to amend the Constitution.

Folks, I hate to say it, but it may now be necessary for we the people to start enforcing our own laws. Our treasonous government has shown beyond any shadow of a doubt, that they are trying with the greatest of efforts, to keep, and in fact, increase the rate of the invasion. It is the goal of the Corporation to maximize profits by using the cheapest available work force and pushing costs to be absorbed by the general public. Using illegal immigrants allows corporations to gain all of the benefit of a cheap labor force while the increased burden to law enforcement and education is paid for by the taxpayer.
The Corporations own the politicians, especially the Republicans. The only way to have immigration reform is to first have election reform. The politicians must begin to answer to the general public and not to their Corporate sponsors.

Not certain that you can blame Webb or the Yanks. Webb just got voted in a few weeks back. What is it about your rage with illegal immigrants?? I come to this site wanting to read about the housing bubble, and you bring up the Mexicans more and more. Here's what I see.
1-there must be something really wrong in Mexico that so many people risk their lives and their freedom to come here. Some of the ills: low wages, poverty and lack of opportunity in Mexico must stem from something, and given the US history of involment everywhere, I can't imagine we've not had a hand in making their situation what it is. Though I'm no expert in Mexican history, I wonder what effects NAFTA and other economic policies have had in Mexico. Maybe the Illegal situation is our chicks coming home to roost. Whatever the case we're destroying lives when what needs to be fixed are policies.
2-While there are illegal immigrants who come through and cause the problems they do, dont we have bigger issues to contend with. Trillions of dollars going to Iraq, no health care for many working people, let alone most children, and the poor? An education system that insists on teaching to a standardized test that the President probably would have a difficult time passing, you name it, we have the problems.
3-I keep hearing that there are americans who would gladly do the work the Mexicans do. Really? I've got family members who haven't worked in years. (yes they are lazy and probably mentally ill) They dont seem to want to wash dishes, wipe asses or clean piss off toilet seats in public buildings. A work contract needs two things, a person needing a job done and a person willing to do the job. I've yet to see too many of my fellow legals wanting to do the nasty jobs.
4-I dont know what your status is in England or where ever you live, worker with visa, illegal or whatever, aren't you an immigrant bringing in your American-ness to Great Britain? So, its okay if you go in b/c you're what? From English stock?
5-What I see from all the anti-immigrant rage is really racisim. You wouldn't be freaking out if it were Canadian's coming across the country "taking" or jobs. Oh, that's right. Canadians are mostly white, protestant, english speaking, mini mes! Maybe Canada must be doing something right b/c their people aren't flocking here, but extending aid to Americans wanting to escape America under Bush. (remember the Canadian program to Marry and American after the 2004 election? It was a joke, but the sentiment was there nonetheless).
The Mexican's are the latest in a long line of "other" folks Americans have enjoyed hating. Americans have trashed the Norwegians (scandahoovians) the Irish (Paddys) the Italians (Wops, who by the way stood for Without Papers--tinges of illegal immigrant) and so on. I'm not sure of the tribal laws at the time Columbus and the Pilgrims landed, but I'm pretty sure that they came as illegals. And they killed the Original Americans, wiped many out with disease, and shoved them onto reservations after the new americans re-neged on almost all of their treaties (contracts for the international set). Just a slight bit of history the anti-illegal immigrant crowd always ignores.
Sure this is your blog and I come as a guest. But I hope that others reading this dont have the rabid anti immigration feel that you have, but maybe I'm wrong, judging from the comments on this posting.
I enjoy the housing talk. The stories of bubble sitters, fu*&ked buyers, talk about what's going on with the dollar, the incessant amounts of greed our fellow Americans are displaying, all very informative and at some times fun.
But I think of the quote about the person who kept watching the Nazi's take the "others" until there was no one left to help when he was taken by. By encouraging hatred towards the "bad guys" drawn in bold lines of black, dont we run the risk of sliding into hating the folks who are drawn in greys, where there is no clear-cut line?
Just to come clean, I am an immigrant. A legal one, I was adopted into this country from Asia. I am a naturalized citizen. I hold a number of degrees, including a law degree (which may be a liability in some cases :) ) I have only one child--I'm a strong advocate of zero population growth (and I do cringe when I see Mexican families with 5 kids, but I cringe more when I see the really rich white families with 3-4 kids b/c I know they are using way more of the planets resources b/c their parents can, and do!!) I pay my taxes, and unlike most Americans I'm well-traveled and I really give a shit about the rest of the world and my view is not myopically just on the US. I do love my country and after traveling to 30 other countries I came back to this one b/c it's home.
Anyways, I've read enough comments on this blog to see people digging into any weak links that exist in someone's armour, so here's mine.

While agree with you that the blog has its xenophobic contributors, I think you miss Keith's point. Legal immigration in our land of laws is the issue. Past histories in the US are not. We have corporations wnating cheap labor and it comes at the expense of our poorer population.
When I started out in the workforce I had some total crap jobs, hell not even 5 years ago during a layoff I worked in landscaping, very hard work. I worked alongside of illegal mexicans aliens.
The point of americans not willing to work doing menial jobs weighs very empty with me. I have done them. The problem is people need more pay and that is what the minimum wage issue is about now.

Since Homeland Security took over the three agencies who used to work on the borders (Dept. of Agriculture, U.S. Customs and the INS), canned a lot of those federal employees and took away and/or greatly reduced the benefits/salaries of the ones who remained and did away with their GS ratings? We have INCREASED enforcement with LESS federal employees on the borders who are now overburdened with a greater workload and less pay?

On May 1st, the activists who brought you thousands of Mexican flags flying in marches down the streets of our cities are now bringing you “Nothing Gringo Day”. With help from the Mexican government, Mexican unions, Mexican political groups, and through the Spanish language radio and newspapers, the call has gone out to make America experience a total boycott, both here and in Mexico. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
Just the word “boycott” sparks the image of noble dissent in the face of economic or social oppression. I think of American colonials bucking British economic interests in retaliation to the Stamp Act. Or perhaps the ostracizing of Irish landlord Charles Boycott, the namesake of the verb for all tyrannized people. If not tyrannized, at least disgruntled. If not disgruntled, maybe just bored.
Yet, isn’t the key to a successful boycott an economic or social upper-hand? The cost must be felt if the offending party be forced to reform. For example, how does boycotting a movie you had no intention of going to affect the box office? More people probably see a boycotted movie due to the attention than if it had simply been ignored.
President Carter thought he was on to something when he kept American athletes out of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. That showed ‘em. That particular boycott neither got the USSR out of Afghanistan nor brought down the Berlin Wall. It just caused our own athletes to suffer.
The May 1st anti-Gringo-fest is also being billed as “A Day Without Immigrants” which is a misnomer on a couple of counts. First, the threatened boycott fails to conjure the image of a Norwegian refusing to buy his May 1 lutefisk at the corner Fareway. Second, the pro-amnesty groups are insistent on confusing legal and illegal immigration. Let’s not start mixing our apples and oranges. The issue before Congress is illegal immigration. Perhaps the May 1st boycott should give America a glimpse into “A Day Without ILLEGAL Immigration.”
What would that May 1st look like without illegal immigration? There would be no one to smuggle across our southern border the heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines that plague the United States, reducing the U.S. supply of meth that day by 80%. The lives of 12 U.S. citizens would be saved who otherwise die a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens each day. Another 13 Americans would survive who are otherwise killed each day by uninsured drunk driving illegals. Our hospital emergency rooms would not be flooded with everything from gunshot wounds, to anchor babies, to imported diseases to hangnails, giving American citizens the day off from standing in line behind illegals. Eight American children would not suffer the horror as a victim of a sex crime.
On the negative side, the price of a pound of tomatoes might go up from $0.79 to $0.80. That is unless you have a garden. But I’m guessing that the Mexican drug lords are not taking May 1st off. Neither will the 11,000 illegal invaders that pour over our border every other day of the year. It is a safe bet that the U.S. Border Patrol will have a very busy “Nothing Gringo Day.”
Since September 11th, it remains true that OBL is the greatest threat to America. I will leave it to the reader to decide if the greatest threat is Osama bin Laden or the Open Borders Lobby. The emerging cheap labor “ruling class” in America is the strongest supporter of amnesty for illegals. Their anti-American “new servant class” has chosen to boycott them; the very definition of irony. On May 1st, Primero de Mayo, Americans will observe, as illegal immigrants celebrate, “Bite the Hand That Feeds You Day.”

Immigrant in crash poses dilemma
The suspect in a fatal Durham crash was in the country illegally, federal officials say

DURHAM - The man accused of killing a Raleigh musician in a wreck Sunday morning has been identified by federal authorities as an illegal immigrant, which could force officials to make a difficult decision.
Carlos Gonzalez Hernandez, 36, remained in Durham County jail Thursday charged with felony death by vehicle in the wreck that killed Sue Williamson, 54, and injured her husband, Tom, on Sunday morning on U.S. 70. Police said Gonzalez Hernandez had a blood-alcohol level of .17 after the crash.
It was the second deadly collision in North Carolina involving an illegal immigrant in two weeks.
Bail for Gonzalez Hernandez was set at $100,000. If he puts up bail, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials will have 48 hours to decide whether to put him in federal custody and begin deportation proceedings or let him go and deal with immigration issues after any criminal case is resolved.
Agents frequently face a dilemma in deciding whether to detain illegal immigrants out on bail, said Tom O'Connell, resident agent in charge for the ICE office in Cary.
If they detain a suspect and begin deportation proceedings, the person could be deported before standing trial, O'Connell said.
If agents waive detention, the person could flee or commit other crimes, he said.
"We want [that person] to do time for the crime he did first," O'Connell said.
"What happens when I lift the detainer and next weekend he does the same thing and I knew he allegedly killed people before?" O'Connell said. "There's some liability issues there."
Though it can be a risk, O'Connell said Gonzalez Hernandez, who came to the United States from Mexico via Brownsville, Texas, in 1999, likely would be detained if he posts bond.
Agents face a similar decision in a wreck near Sanford on Oct. 27. Pastor Rios Sanchez, 55, was charged with killing two N.C. State University students and a 16-year-old boy in a head-on collision near Sanford. Sanchez is charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He is being held in the Lee County jail with his bail set at $75,000.
O'Connell determined that Sanchez, too, is in the country illegally, and ICE agents will face another conundrum if he bails out of jail.

The neighborhood I live in is not complete yet. Its about 90% done here in Texas. The year I have been here ( after moving from a bubble area ) I have only seen one African American worker -- it was for some electrical work. The foreman is typically the only white guy in the operation. People at the sales office white.

Where do you draw the line on in migration 1,000,000 a year 2, 3, 4.... ? Because as I see it it has become an open invitation.
I do not see this as an issue of our laws being inadequate, they are fine and enforcement is bad.
What is problematic is the current quotas. Which speaks to your statement on how do you know, well since the quota is only about a thousand a year(for Mexicans), I would say your odds are pretty good.
Living in a fairly cosmopolitan area and having traveled a bit myself,when it comes to the spanish speakers, I know a central-American from cultural clues they give off versus south american to an extent and carribean spanish speakers. From their choice of clothes habits and accents, even choice of spanish words. So the VA man may know more than you think since his home has become more cosmopolitan.

Here is some facts that I know will make you queezy. In the year 2050 the majority in this country will be hispanics, second will be asians, third white and last blacks. But so what? An American will be an American no matter what he looks like.
Get over it! People were complaining about the Irish and the Italians back in the days. We are not all speaking Italian! or naming our highways Luigi. It's a global economy. We ship in cheap products from China and cheap labor from Mexico. We even hire Indians to do our telephone customer service and write computer programs all the way in India. Ultimately, it all benefits the consumer(yes you, dummy) Supply and demand will always triumph in this country, sorry to burst your bubble. Leave the hardworking Mexican immigrants alone. They are not the ones that will blow themselves up in a cafe.
I think this issue all boils down to the fact that natively born Americans are spoiled and lazy by comparison to the immigrants, legal or not. I can only provide my own anecdotal observations while building my house. I have had white American contractors, white Eastern European contractors, Mexican contractors, Ecuadorian contractors, Brazilian contractors, etc., and all I can say is that the Americans were, by far, the laziest of the bunch. Not only were they the most expensive, they worked short days, never worked weekends, and they generally had horrible, arrogant "doing me a favor" attitudes. By contrast, all of the immigrant contractors, legal or not (don't ask, don't tell...) were fast, worked long hard days and weekends, and even worked in rain and freezing weather. They worked with a sense of purpose and honor, whereas the American contractors would just complain or keep dinging me with extra charges, etc.
As far as I am concerned, if I had two equally qualified contractors asking for the same wage, one white and one immigrant, I would choose the immigrant hands down. For me the issue is not just about cheap labor. It's about finding good quality workers with good worth ethics.
The POINT, is that criminal invading mexican savages NOW KILL MORE AMERICANS EACH AND EVERY YEAR than were killed on 9/11. What don't you fruitcakes get about that?

I must admit I do not know how many legals are allowed into our country per year and what countries they are allowed to immigrate from. I do not mean to pass myself off as an expert on this, and never will.
Last year during all of the marches for/against (il)legal immigration I was out of the country watching places like France grapple with their own issues of illegal immigration. Very interesting in the similarities and differences in our two countries.
1000 seems a pathetically low number for immigration, 1,000,000 seems a bit high. I cannot say what the final numbers should be. You said earlier that perhaps we should "lock up the employers" for aiding and abetting the illegal immigrants. True we could, but who's forcing them to hire (the cheaper) labor? Isn't it the consumer who keeps demanding and demanding things get cheaper until they are almost free? For the employers to make any profit, they need to cut costs somehow. Yes we need a living wage (not a minimum wage) so that the labor pools is evened out between the poorer folks, immigrants and non-immigrants. Then perhaps the non-immigrants would have more of a fighting chance of seeing jobs that they could fill.
What a topic I choose for my first posts on this blog. Could have choosen something easy like a jab at mortgage brokers or something :)

Do we close up like a clam or open up and recognize the greater America, the America that includes all the nations and peoples on this continent?
Isn't that what Europe is doing? No longer looking at themselves as French or German or British but widening their borders and with it the same issues of migration, wages, benefits etc? We need to have the same relationship with Canada and Mexico that Britain has with France and Spain and the rest of Europe. We can choose to decline or expand. A united market of 400 million or 300 million. When we have to compete with an expanded Europe of what 350 million? Or India and China with billions, shouldn't we see this as an opportunity instead of a curse?

Welcome to the fray, you chose a doosy to dive in on. Your very welcome for the polite response. I believe in a good dialog especially when it is rational vs. emotional, which is too easy online because of anonymity. However, I must confess they do touch nerves at times.
It is a rough and tumble bunch here and I like to throw myself in the middle of it to give at least what I see as a voice of reason (at least to some?).
When you were out of the country my sister and brother-in-law were in PHX witnessing the day without mexicans. She is studying gated rental communities for her PHD and he is a professor of planning at VA Tech. Any way, both of their comments were that it was a ghost town especially in Tempe. My bil went to get a sandwich made at his favorite place and said only the owner was there making sandwiches. The owner was overwhelmed and made a bad sandwich. My bil's take on it is get used to it, we need the mexicans...alot!
As for the 1,000 number, I think it was the Newshour that had mentioned the number in the report.
As for the similarity between the French and US. Their people invited former colony members to come to France (much like Britain)which opened the door to Algerians. The other difference is they don't allow access to jobs as they are not citizens. Mexico was only a colony of the us in as much as when Polk attacked Mexico to get California for for Manifest destiny and in essence got the Mexicans in the west as part of the deal.
As for consumers driving this low price fight, I disagree. I see it more as a race to the bottom wage-wise and companies knowing full well that there will be little to no penalty pursue a low wage workforce and illegals help to drive down wages. Unions gain little or no traction in places where they work due to the ultimate sword of damacles hanging over their heads that employers use to intimidate them. IIRC Walmart was implicated in some of these practices.

here's my two cents on the cultural issue. there's a lot of fuming goin on regarding the mexican culture in particular. some of us labeled them criminals. i agree that if one committed a crime regardless of color, you have to pay.
i think that, education has a lot to do with this. poor and uneducated people tend to become a burden to society. they are perhasp unaware that what they are doing annoys the senses. they may not even know right from wrong and lack of education will show that.
the same is to be said with people who are abhors hatred. they cannot carry an intelliegnt debate, but rather injects racial slur and anger in any debate. look at the demograhics. people who are acting like that have a very low self-esteem, no college degree and simply just a low life. again - regardless of the color of their skin.

As for replacement workers, business can do what they used to do; Hire HS and University kids. This past summer, some kid asked me if I needed my lawn mowed (had to tell him I did not have a lawn). Heck, my siblings and I used to work jobs like that while going to school. Looking back, we believe it gave us a reason to continue our education.

Keith I agree about legal immigration. Currently our system is a joke. If we are not going to control it legally then we should drop the pretense and open the border like Europe to other countrie's citizens in their region.
Also if you are not going to control immigration, then make it easier for the best and the brightest to come over here from Europe and Asia.
Kind of like prohibition. It was a joke, not controllable, increase crime etc. Legalizing alchohol was smart, and profitable. A more open border would eliminate a lot of the criminal element, and the profit, so maybe even reduce poor migrants since they often need loans and help to get north and are extorted by criminals. Once there is no profit then maybe only those who can afford to make it north will come.
Also we need to end the farce. We all know what would happen if 20% of the American's moved to Mexico illegally. Reciprosity once and for all. Spaniards may not want Brits moving to Spain (though many small towns and villages have benefited from this migration) but since Spaniards have the same freedoms to go to London it eases the tensions.
Also the EU has sought to equalize the income disparities that drive migration around europe. We need to do that but can only do that when Mexico begins to treat us as an equal and grants us the same rights Mexican companies and citizens have in this country.
I think immigrants is our national identity and we should capitalize on the strength of that identity and utilize it to our benefit, not the benefit of criminals and the rich.
