HP hero Congressman Ron Paul is drawing attention to the issue of "anchor babies" - the new US citizens born to illegal immigrants who broke into the country.

A recent article in the Houston Chronicle discusses the problem of so-called anchor babies, children born in U.S. hospitals to illegal immigrant parents. These children automatically become citizens, and thus serve as an anchor for their parents to remain in the country. Our immigration authorities understandably are reluctant to break up families by deporting parents of young babies. But birthright citizenship, originating in the 14th amendment, has become a serious cultural and economic dilemma for our nation.
In some Houston hospitals, administrators estimate that 70 or 80% of the babies born have parents who are in the country illegally.
This obviously cannot be sustained, either by the hospitals involved or the taxpayers who end up paying the bills.
No other wealthy, western nations grant automatic citizenship to those who simply happen to be born within their borders to non-citizens.
The real problem is not immigration, but rather the welfare state magnet.
We must end the perverse incentives that encourage immigrants to come here illegally, including the anchor baby incentive.
I’ve introduced legislation that would amend the Constitution and end automatic birthright citizenship.

Keith- Thank you for keeping people informed on one of the most pressing issues for the U.S. especially in Calif. This is why you have the BEST R.E. blog around. This is why I don't think that the illegal aliens will leave after the building melt down, it is better to suck the American tax payer dry i.e. welfare, WIC,food stamps than to go home.

Punish the businesses hiring the illegals if it's the illegals that's troubling americans. No work, no illegals. This is where the republican party is divided between the business pro-illegal crowd and the isolationist/racist crowd. There was a funny article some months ago that described the experiences of an unemployed American engineer trying to emigrate to China or India to find work. The Chinese consulate laughed in his face and said forget it. The Indian consulate was more polite, but unless he was willing to bring lots of money with him and wait two years, there was essentially zero chance he could get a work visa.

Not sure why a new amendment would be necessary, unless the recent discussion of the 14th amendment reinterpretation has come to a dead end.
That discussion centered on the Courts reinterpreting the amendment to end the 'anchor baby' status, as not all babies born here are automatically citizens (e.g., children born here to diplomats posted to the U.S.).
The "jurisdiction" phrase in the amendment ("All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof") is apparently what covers the babies of diplomats and could be used to challenge the "anchor baby" status - illegal resident parents are subject to the jurisdiction of their own countries of origin.

TV doesn't lie!
THE Hispanic bashers and other freaking bigots like hebrew lender just want to turn this country into another Iraq, with militias running on the streets and killing each other. This will probably solve the problem of immigration because if people like lender get their way, not even the most poor Mexican will want to come here. IMO we need to control our borders, but also treat people who are alredy here with respect.

Anon 6:31, I'm glad you made my point for me. I say what I say because I in fact DO NOT WANT THIS NATION TO TURN INTO IRAQ (multi-ethnic tribes running around killing each other). If you would turn off the tv and actually pick up a few books and read, you would discover that multi-ethnic empires have always failed. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM THROUGHOUT RECORDED HISTORY! When a nation starts to have large groups of different ethnicities, that is when you know time is running short(historicly). Why would things be any different for us? As they say, there is nothing new under the sun, and if we allow this tidal wave of criminal invaders to continue flooding into our once great nation, we will soon (very soon, they reproduce like rabbits, which we also pay for) more closely resemble Iraq than America.
I dont know how old you are, but I can remember a time when you did'nt have to lock your doors when you left your house, you did'nt need an alarm on your car, you could let your children play out in the streets for hours at a time and not worry at all! Crime was non-existant! I remember white America and I miss her. Maybe you prefer what we have today instead?

That is how I grew up, but there were black kids in our school, too. There were no gangs and EVERYONE spoke English.
You are both right, but the word is not ethnic, it is not DNA or race, it is culture, it has become their culture against the AMERICAN culture. These people are not assimilating, That is THE BIG problem.

I think only children born to legal residents should become citizens.
In Canada, if your child is born there it becomes a citizen but you don't get to stay unless you are otherwise a legal resident. That would be ok for the US too.

i have a question for any mexican reading this. i live in so cal and i see a lot of mexicans driving cars with mexican flag license plate and god ugly mexican flags on their front lawn, if you are so god damn proud of your dirty county, why the f*ck did you come here. you f*cked up your country and now you are f*cking up this one too. go to any neighborhood where there's predominantly mexican population and all you see the dirtiest neighborhood with gangbangers and teenage mothers everywhere. oh, and don't forget the crime rate, all you see on tv are mostly latinos comitting crimes, and you know what, your teenage girlfriend's offspring will become a criminal one day and f*ck this country even more.
And what's with all inoperable pieces of shit in the driveway?
My in-laws live on the best street in the city. Well, it used to be anyway. Their new neighbor paid $700K+ for their house and there are EIGHT cars parked; Two in the driveway don't EVER move. I can't figure out how many people live in the house either.
Oh and their other "new" neighbor has a family of 5 including 3 children living in the GARAGE. They'll probably do something stupid like try to heat it with a faulty poratble heater.......I hope my in-laws have good fire insurance.
