October 12, 2006

Nah, the REIC's campaign and lobby money hasn't corrupted our politicians. Or our president. Nah.

Funny to see this issued for June 2006, when the housing crash was in full swing, and anyone who bought then is now crushed, hopelessly, totally, completely crushed.

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Owning a home is an important part of the American dream. During National Homeownership Month, we raise awareness of homeownership and encourage more Americans to consider the benefits of owning their own home.

Nearly 70 percent of Americans enjoy the satisfaction of owning their own home, and my Administration continues to promote an ownership society where the promise of America reaches all our citizens.

The American Dream Downpayment Act of 2003 is helping thousands of low to moderate income and minority families with downpayment and closing costs, which represent the greatest barrier to homeownership. Since 2002, when I announced our goal to help 5.5 million minorities become homeowners by the end of this decade, the rate of minority homeownership has climbed above 50 percent, and more than 2.5 million minority families have become new homeowners. My Administration will continue to provide counseling and assistance for new homebuyers and expand homeownership opportunities for all Americans.

During National Homeownership Month and throughout the year, we applaud the men and women who work to achieve the dream of homeownership, and we are grateful for those who provide counseling, lending, real estate, construction, and other services to these individuals. The hard work, financial discipline, and personal responsibility of our country's homeowners help transform neighborhoods throughout our Nation and reflect the best qualities of America.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 2006 as National Homeownership Month. I call upon the people of the United States to join me in building a more hopeful society and recognizing the importance of expanding the ownership of homes across our great Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

(Quote from article):

"Nearly 70 percent of Americans enjoy the satisfaction of owning their own home, and my Administration continues to promote an ownership society where the promise of America reaches all our citizens."

(Reply): The propaganda NEVER ceases to amaze me! Once again, we are told that 70% of Americans "own" their homes. Uh, excuse me, but NO ONE actually OWNS their home.

As I have stated many times before--and most sheeple cannot understand--until EACH AND EVERY mortgage payment is made, once cannot even PRETEND to "own" the home.

Next (and this is the part that even some HPers ignorantly dispute) one will NEVER own the home due to property taxes. Now, before you flame me, think about this point very carefully. How can you actually have "ownership" if you are FORCED to pay "rent" to the state AT THE THREAT OF CONFISCATION OF THE PROPERTY?!!!

Property taxes undermine one of the most basic tenets of freedom: Freedom to own OUTRIGHT one's property. For without freedom of ownership, one is simply a serf.

Butch is right. So many people think they own "real estate", when all they own (assuming the associated loans are paid off) is the right to use that "real estate". The government can set the taxes at whatever they want, then take your property if you can't or won't pay up.

They will surely need counseling when they are underwater and are in foreclosure. As housing units became more affordable due to the housing bust there will be more homeownership opportunities.

I'm new to this blog. I feel priced out of the market even though it has slowed down. I do not want to take out a huge morgage, nor do I want to spend all of my cash on a home. What will it take to have the market really corrected - houses priced so they are affordable? I make @75k/year and houses in my area are 550-700k for a junker that needs work or is in a horrible location.
Great blog, by the way - love all opinions.

Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Indenturing yourself to crushing debt is an important part of the American dream. During National Debt Slavery Month, we raise awareness of homeownership and encourage more Americans to leverage themselves into owning an overpriced depreciating asset.

Nearly 70 percent of Americans enjoy the fake satisfaction of "owning" their own home, and my Administration continues to promote a debt filled society where the promise of America is borrowed from other countries throughout the world.

The American Dream Downpayment Act of 2003 is helping thousands of low to moderate income and minority families with downpayment and closing costs, which represent the greatest barrier to debt slavery. Since 2002, when I announced our goal to help 5.5 million minorities become debt slaves by the end of this decade, the rate of minority homeownership has climbed above 50 percent, and more than 2.5 million minority families have become new debt slaves. My Administration will continue to provide counseling and assistance for new homebuyers and expand debt slavery for all Americans.

During National Debt Slavery Month and throughout the year, we applaud the men and women who borrow from others in order to achieve the dream of homeownership, and we are grateful for those who provide counseling, lending, real estate, construction, and other services to these new debt slaves. The hard work, financial discipline, and personal responsibility of lenders from other countries will help transform neighborhoods throughout our Nation and reflect the best qualities of an indentured servitude that is my dream for America.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 2006 as National Debt Slavery Month. I call upon the people of the United States to join me in building a more indebted society and recognizing the importance of expanding the amount of debt owed across our great Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

Keith,
I am having a lot of trouble with the sight this am. FYI.
Anyway, least we forget, even after the home is 'paid for' and taxes are reoccurring, The INSURANCE COMPANY really has the final say and in a form owns your home as well. It is just the luck of the draw, if or when disaster strikes and GOOD LUCK getting the INSURANCE COMPANY to make you whole again. They do not want to pay. End of Story. Your Done, stick a fork in it.

You still have to take Personal responsibility even if the government is helping you out.

No, we are all 'victims' of the Credit/Housing bubble.

Note sarcastic tone.

Just let me know where I can sign up for my $100,000 down payment assistance for my local metropolitan area. Why not make it $150,000 so I can add a hot tub in the middle of my living room for relaxing while I watch Lost; we can dub the project the “Every American Needs a Hot Tub to Watch Lost” assistance program. You think we got teeth with that marketing slogan?

"the worst words you can hear are I'm from the government and I'm here to help"

to quote a friend who was a 20 year Navy veteran on the war on terror in 2001

"sure hope the the 'war on terror' dosn't go like Uncle Sam's 'war on drugs' or his 'war on poverty'"

Excellent Proclamation by the President, I rather enjoyed National Homeownership Month.

I’m looking forward to the next Proclamation, National Foreclosure Month.

This whole "ownership society" thing is phoney. Like privatizing social security is a sop for investment companies and insurance mobsters.

"What will take for the market to really corect?"

TH- Here's what it will take:

Banks tighten lending to where it used to be:

20% downpayment plus mortgage of 2-3X income on a fixed rate.

When that happens, the price of homes will plummet.

So start saving as much of that 75K salary as you possibly can. Those 500-750K homes could be 200K within the year and you want your Downpayment ready.

Anonymous said...

The price of homes has done nothing but inflate since Fannie Mae was created.

In the 60's, before Fannie, homes were 1-1.5X income.

Let Fannie die. And get rid of all government "help". The only people they're helping are the bankers. Period.

Butch,

By your definition of ownership, nobody owns anything, including themselves. Think about it.

Under your logic, a car can't be owned, because it is taxed and required to be licensed every year. Even people are taxed. If you don't pay your taxes, you go to jail. Therefore, there is no ownership.

The real definition of ownership is the "power to exclusively control and use for one's own purposes, that which is owned." (Wikipedia)

So a piece of real estate, even if mortgaged and taxed can be controled in its appearance, occupancy, sale and its use as collateral for additional mortgages if sufficient value is found. The titled owner of the house makes these decisions even if a bank owns the mortgage.

Agree that the limitations of property tax and insurance make the "ownership" concept dodgy even if there are no other lienholders. Agree that govt "help" simply puts things out of the price range of normal people. When I was a child, middle class people could pay their own medical bills. That was before Medicare, Medicaid, etc. This aversion to govt "help" is the reason why I am a Republican. However, George W Bush is not any kind of a Republican i can identify with. I like McCain, or bring back Goldwater.
