It's about time college students in America care about something

Man, I sure wish that there was something to protest when I was in school. Nothing going on back then though. Now? A mismanaged fraudulent war, out of control illegal immigration, a devastating housing crash, a $40 Trillion deficit, take your pick!

Come on brain dead fox-news-brainwashed university students - do some sit-ins, take a building or two, wake up!

Rich Columbia U. students protesting FOR illegal immigrants - not what you had in mind Keef.

no, exactly what I had in mind - protest SOMETHING, protest ANYTHING, just start caring for a change

even though I'm against them

Hey Keith - maybe do some research first - then protest ...

mindless sheeple protesting is very scary Keith.

Dude, Columbia is not a protest school anymore. Those were the 'Strawberry Statement' days of the late 60s.

25% of CU undergrads attend law school, 10% of CU undergrads (mostly science majors) attend medical school, the remaining half either opt for graduate studies, consulting, or financial (see Wall Street shuttle 1/9 train) career tracks. And how do I know this? I'm an alumni (yes, I'm ashamed of myself for having wasted my parent's money when SUNY gave me a full scholarship) and they are the biggest posers out there as far as being "seen as leftist".

Another thing to remember... The dumbing down of America has ALREADY taken place.

Have a nice day.

No Keith. Spoiled brat rich kids protesting to allow the destruction of the middle class has been going for years. They think they are smart, but they really very brain dead. The bottom line is that most ivy-league students are too young and dumb to know what is going on in the real world and have not got the foggiest idea of what Jim Gilcrest even stands for.

What we need is more middle income people rising up the spoild brats at Columbia and the Brats on Wall Street and the politicians who allow corporations to offshore to asia. Sadly, most Americans will probably continue to do nothing except salivate of the "great deals" they get buying Wal Mart crap!

And not suprisingly, these are three of the top professions that are contributing to the downfall of our economy. They are all focused on short-term profits rather than building a better society. The young MDs coming out of medical school today are especially bad because they just want to make big bucks by doing as much risky surgery as possible rather than working with patients to find a non-invasive solution.

I lived near the asu campus for 4 years in tempe, arizona

know how many protests I saw or heard about during those 4 years?

zero.

kids don't care anymore. even though their peers are off to iraq to get slaughtered, even though they're going to pay 15% of their income to social security and medicare which will not be there when it's time to collect, and even though there'll be no jobs waiting for them when they graduate.

they don't care.

american idol is on. john madden is coming out with a new video game.

Hi again, it's the former Columbia guy.

Let me tell you, the school is full of indoctrinating bullshit which convinces stupid people on financial aid that the field is even once you're hanging around the halls of Lewisohn, Uris, etc and really, nothing can be further from the truth. There are students on campus, all dressed in black/grey trenchcoats, who comb the city day and night spending cash like there's no tommorrow but strangely enough, many of them have summer internships and a job waiting for them whereas some fool from a first or second generation eastern European-American household, whose family can barely make ends meet in Allentown PA, will think that when JP Morgan interviews him for that downtown stint, that his resume is at the top of the pile because of his side research projects (and 'A-' college GPA) is in for a hell of a disappointment because he'll probably have a worse job than the posh socialites who get to party it up in the village or Amsterdam Cafe (if they're too lazy to move about).

That's why I'd bolted after a year and a half there. The place was a bullshit zone with a lot of poshers, socialites, academically tunnelvisioned nerds (who only care about their LSAT score), and I'd already felt that my money was wasted. If you absolutely need an ivy league diploma to impress the grandparents then attend for a brief one year masters program (shaving 2/3-to-3/4 the undergrad 4 year bill) and you can hang that certificate on the wall for posterity and it might even land you an interview at Goldman Sachs provided you got some financial services experience elsewhere. Realize, the experience gets the work but the CU name gets your package past the HR bigots who look at name first (Wharton, LSE, Columbia, Dartmouth, Yale, etc) and then qualifications, second.

We've lost the college age generation - the high school kids though still seem to have some balls. From hispanic kids protesting for and demanding amnesty laws for illegal aliens to Boulder CO High School going on strike( a school strike !!) over the banning of a school band competition contestant called TaleBand - they at least seem to have a pulse. Or maybe infantile behavior and a sense of righteous indignation starts at an earlier age now. Why, we were almost 20years old in my days from the LSE sit-ins.. but that's another story.

You'll LOVE the movie PCU.
(Politically Correct University)

The group in the movie is called the "causeheads" and changes causes about once a week.

There's a lot of things that I disagree on with Keith, but I really think he has a point.

There's no chutzpah in this country anymore. Compare 2006 to the social unrest and political change seen in the 60's and you have to wonder how much Prozac someone's been putting in the drinking water.

There's such a sense of hoplessness and passivity nowadays, and such cynicism. The Boomers of the 60's may have been wrong about a lot pf things in hindsight, but at least they believed they could change things by making an effort and standing for what they believed in. None of that conviction seems to be evident today.

Like Keith, I don't really care what they're protesting about, but at least they're putting in the effort to 'make some noise'.

The citizens in the U.S.(the majority, anyway) generally don't care. Things are too cozy for them and have been so for so long that they don't remember tough times. My dad is the only person I know who cares, besides me. I think the fact that he served in the Vietnam war, is the reason why. He has lived through tough times and remembers. Most people especially young people (my peers) don't give a shit. They just don't recognize the value of being grateful and the reality that our little posh world can be snapped up right out from under our feet. They have no compassion for those in need or those in other countries and the tough times they suffer through because things have always been so good for them. We live in a very selfish society.

I see that the way our country is going could change all this. My point is they will only care once it happens, because then it will be real and they will have to deal with it...then and only then will people speak up in this country. Unfortunately it will be too late and it will take years or decades to change things for the better. People are too passive in our country because most people, especially those that have a say in anything are just plain spoiled.

Also, before I get all the posts about how it's all the fault of the young...save it. All those damn baby boomers are just as bad, my dad and anyone else who had to fight for this country seem to be the exceptions.

The country has been on lithium for awhile now...the American masses, young and old, are hooked to a sense of entitlement and mindless consumerism. It's all about me,me,me...and when we realize nobody gives a shit about you, you, you..its too late.
Worship of net worth, not self worth is the driving force in this country..."the ownership society", until you realize you own nothing and the elite few, own everything.
Meanwhile the universities churn out
narrowminded job applicants instead of well-rounded, educated independent
free-thinkers. The overwhelming majority of these 'professionals" are doomed as wage slaves condemned to an existence where chasing a W-2 is their only focus in life.
Was it Alexis de Tocqueville (?) who wrote during a trip to the early United States about Americans:
"Little people with big mortgages"

I'm all for these "illegal" immigrants. They work harder than LAZY Americans. The harder they work the better my companies do and the more dividends I get.

Can someone here please answer this question. Exactly how many billion dollars will it cost to erect the wall between us and Mexico? Who do we think will be the contractors (maybe Haliburton)? How about this, lets not build a wall and instead lets save the billions of dollars. Instead of building a wall, lets fine the crap out of businesses and private INDIVIDUALS who hire illegals. When I refer to fines, I mean huge fines, like hundreds of thousands of dollars for businesses and thousands of dollars for private individuals who hire illegals. If we did this we would not have to spend billions for Haliburton to build a wall between us and Mexico and the fines collected can go towards programs that enhance the daily lives of the middle class, like better public transportation for starters. Let's face it IF NO ONE HIRES ILLEGALS, WHERE WILL THEY WORK? IF THEY CANNOT FIND A JOB IN OUR COUNTRY, WILL THEY CONTINUE TO COME IN DROVES? They know that there are limitless job opportunities here because businesses and individuals are happy to hire them a lower wages. If we stop businesses and individuals from hiring them why would they still come? You see, the government knows that illegals are a cheap source of labor. We go back and forth arguing over the border and walls, yet don't look right where we live to correct this condition, it is what our government wants us to do, bicker back and forth while they continue to do nothing. So what do you folks think of my idea of imposing huge fines for hiring illegals?

I agree with the education comment too. It did not take me too long to figure out that universities are just a different kind of corporate company churning out employees for the corporate masses. There is very little free thinking going on.

I was just having a conversation with a friend about what we would each tell a group of high schoolers...going in, now that we're out (of college). My friend said he would tell them to choose a major with the highest paying job, because your goal should be the highest yielding wage for your time. Not bad advice.

I would tell them to choose entrepreneurship and take classes to foster a business (in any field). It might seem off topic, but I think that's part of the problem...students are focusing on the job as the end result and not the education or opportunity to learn and apply knowledge "outside of the box". Of course there are exceptions...and I would encourage students to be that exception.

I think it's a good idea, but you're missing the point. It won't happen because the gov (especially the current administration) do not want it to happen. Ben Bernanke was just saying a few days ago that we must increase immigration to offset the baby boomer retirement issue. He was saying we need more tax paying citizens to pay for the exodus of this generation and the entitlement programs. What you need to realize is that this is our reality...Bush and co. may pose and front money for a wall, but they really won't do anything major about it because they need the relatively cheap labor (to keep GDP flowing) and the tax income. Sorry folks...just read the news.

I say we institute an EMIGRATION policy of our own. A division of marines needs to emigrate through Texas into Mexico with orders to keep going until they reach the border with Guatemala.

Amnesty for Mexicans? Sure, if they keep their noses clean, we'll let them apply for citizenship and statehood in ten years. If Pedro learns English and does a stint in the military he can cut that time in half.

Mexican government officials and drug lords can leave quietly with their stolen loot, the understanding being that if they ever return they will be tried for their crimes.

In the meantime, those hard-working Mexicans can pay taxes so Boomers can have a social security check. And just think, they can go wherever they like, except Canada, but they're next on the list...

No student protests any more? Just wait until Rummy and Darth Cheney reinstitute the draft. I predict there will be so much protesting then that blood will flow in the streets.

These are very smart rich kids who have a very long term outlook. Their first priority is to make sure that when they graduate there will be someone to clean their toilets, clean dishes in restaurants they visit, cut their lawn, and pick their organic veggies.

Just to give you an idea of how some of these PC stupid ivy kids really feel, I'd recently spoken to someone (five years post-graduation) and she'd said that if her life was unmanageable (i.e. couple of years w/o work, loss of RE equity, etc) that she'd simply take an overdose of sleeping pills w/ vodka and get it over with. At first, I'd thought she was unique but then I met others, all within the same age bracket and elite college educated, who thought the same. Now, I imagine that if there's a critical mass of such passive, overeducated buffoons who'll slit the wrist at any sign of trouble, what makes you think that this generation can save the country from becoming a banana republic with such testicular fortitude?

Whoah, hang on there Keith.

If students are going to get out and protest anything concerning housing, don't you think it should be,

1) protest the fact that houses are completely out of reach, just as they are poised to enter the market

or

2) protest the sleazy lending industries with their toxic loans that, if continued, will create a full generation of debt slaves (ie. themselves) and firther inflate prices.

Why in the world would students today protest the housing crash? They should be cheering it on and doing whatever they can to ensure it's full and final completion.

Student protests?

Who gives a shit?

Wait til those indoctrinated lil sob's are out on their own, with a mortgage, bills, screaming kids, a nagging wife, an asshole boss, high taxes, a vehicle in perpetual breakdown, a bitching muther in-law.......then and only then will i really care to listen to what they have to say!

Until then keep binge drinking and screwing the Deans daughter!

University students are much more brain washed as to the goings on in the real world, than most people think.

As someone has said in the passed (I think it was Churchill) "If your 20 y.o and a communist then you are smart. If your 30 and a communist, then you're an idiot"

First thing university students should do is rebel against their teahcers, who have been feeding them liberal propaganda these passed 30 years.

You know what would have really been funny? If those people on stage were not the minutemen patriots, but instead a group intent on flushing all the American traitors down the toilet. I would'nt have shed a tear if they had ten of twenty guys behing the curtain with automatic weapons that opened fire on the American traitors rushing the stage.

What I don't understand is why these kids, who're allegedly known for taking exams, need to waste four years on an on-campus program just to prove to an employer that they're capable of working in an office setting. Let's face it, without a true sense of a 'community of scholars' [ since it's really little more than indoctrination of various tenured staff members a/o TAs ], the place is not really a place where lifelong friendships emerge anyways in contrast to let's say the military services, Peace Corp, or some other type of meaningful volunteer organization where personal bonds and growth occurs.

Why don't these so-called smart people opt for a distance learning program and use various standardized types of exams to once again, prove to employers or professional schools that they're worth the risk?
