HousingPanic Stupid Question of the Day

Predict the biggest news story of 2007

* The collapse of the US housing market and REIC-based economy
* The Iraq civil war
* The war with Iran
* The stock market fall
* Bush impeachment hearings
* Spectacular terrorist attack
* Peace breaks out in the Middle East, democracy takes hold
* House prices defy gravity, rise 10%, GDP better than '06
* Stock market roars
* Bush wildly popular again after terrorist attack

What'd I miss?

Oh, FYI, they don't have supermarket tabloids over here. Isn't that odd? No space aliens in parliament, no three-headed babies. Guess they think only Americans are stupid enough for that stuff. I'm not so sure...

Oh Please Keith,

Sorry to be contrary, Keith.

I work in the Hospitality industry and we cater to the British. The UK MSM News Papers I have seen are Tabloids. We have the British daily Papers every where in my town for the tourists from across the pond. The UK publishers do mix up the gossip with some news. Aren't you a Yank anymore?

The US papers got the tabloid idea from the UK IMO.

H5N1 Influenza has been confirmed in mute swans in Michigan, mallards in Maryland and Pennsylvania, Northern pintail in Montana, and Green-winged Teals in Illinois. H5 has been detected in a dead duck at Library Park in Lakeport, CA. So far, officials have claimed that we are dealing with a low pathological strain of H5N1, not the high path Asian H5N1. I believe that there is evidence that the high path strain has migrated to North America. This is big news, but even bigger news are the growing human clusters of H5N1 in Indonesia.

oh, tabloids, sure. lots about celebrities, scandals, etc. the fleet street rags are what inspired the World Weekly News etc of the US.

But for some reason, no out-there-made-up-stuff, like alien babies, end of the world predictions, spaceships crash landing on big ben, etc

the good fiction stuff - that's what we yanks find entertaining when checking out at wal-mart!

There is no such thing as alien Babies or spaceships?????

Definitely a possibility. The Fed no longer publishing M3 is the cash catalyst. I would like to see prices to get destroyed housing-wise, but the above scenario might really take hold...

Oil Analysts Raise 2007 Forecasts as Demand May Outpace Supply

By Mark Shenk

Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Oil analysts are raising their price estimates for
next year in anticipation of increased demand that may outpace the
development of new deposits.

Crude oil will average $64 a barrel in New York in 2007, according to
the median forecast of 29 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News last week.
That's $2 higher than predicted at the end of the second quarter.
Analysts failed to predict the rise in oil throughout a five-year rally
during which prices tripled.

``We see a very tight market continuing into next year,'' said Kevin
Norrish, a director of commodities research for Barclays Capital in
London. Barclays expects oil next year to average $76.70 a barrel, the
highest forecast in the survey.

AmeriKans will NOT seek repeal of HB 6166.

Yale Law Professor Bruce Ackerman states in the L.A. Times, "The compromise legislation. ...authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States. And once thrown into military prison, they cannot expect a trial by their peers or any other of the normal protections of the Bill of Rights."

Similarly, law Professor Marty Lederman explains: "this [subsection (ii) of the definition of 'unlawful enemy combatant'] means that if the Pentagon says you're an unlawful enemy combatant -- using whatever criteria they wish -- then as far as Congress, and U.S. law, is concerned, you are one, whether or not you have had any connection to 'hostilities' at all."

Detainment facilities on American soil have already been set up to handle an influx of prisoners in anticipation of a major nuclear or biological terror attack or widespread race riots. At the start of the year Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root were awarded a $385 million dollar contract by Homeland Security to construct detention and processing facilities in the event of a national emergency.

Like the other poster, I think this is possible... because US dollars are funny money...

We had a hangover after the Clinton economy and Bush will give us a few more drinks just before he leaves office. The democrats, if they get the presidency, will have to set up a "georgey bush" clinic.

Keith - I don't know what you'd call the 'Sun' (in your photo), if not a tabloid.

And, surely you must read 'The News of the World'? Where do you think the 'National Enquirer' got all its ideas from?

Make no mistake, the British can be as low-brow as the Americans, when they want to.

Keith,
I just got back from a meeting and had to post.
Do you remember my comments early on that Tourists will always come to Orlando, and that we in Orlando are pretty much recession proof, based on my past experience (NO Gas lines in the 70'S, no slow down in sales in the 80's crash, etc.)?
Well, I went to a Resort today for a 9;00 am meeting and they were CLOSED. To give you a perspective, Timeshare Resorts Sales Rooms only close Christmas and New Years Day. Period.
Something is going on in Orlando in the Vacation Package Industry.
More to Follow.

i predict that gold is going to the low $400s (and lower if we get deflation), silver to $4-$5, and oil below $50.

the $HUI will crash by 60%+ from the high (having risen 10 times).

the SPX will fall to 1000 or slightly below, then a big rally to 1200-1250 with fed panicked rate cuts, and then another plunge in '08-'09 back to the '02-'03 lows with the potential for SPX 600s.

the 5- and 10-yr treasury yields will reach 2-2.5% area.

soaring mortgage defaults, collapsing money velocity, and DEFLATION will become the concerns ahead. inflation is history.

the fed will be challenged to the extent not seen since boj in the '90s and the fed of the 1930s.

1. Pope assasinated during his visit to Turkey later this month.
2. China puts the thumbs on N Korea after nuclear test causing a change in government.
3. Housing market pause gives way to new round of price increase though not at double digit rises seen the past several years.
4. Inflation is claimed under control at less than 2% but in reality is 7%. Interest rates on mortgages drops below 6%.
5. After the Pope's assasination Arab states will take a more serious line in controlling terrorism, the war in Iraq and Afganistan, and peace in Israel. Nassarallah will be disarmed. The death of Osama will be verified.....by the French!
