Senator Frist tells Fox News that gay marriage and flag burning are top priorities for the Senate

OK, enough is enough. With all the problems going on in the world, with the financial carnage here at home, this is what our leaders see as the top priority?

Are Americans truly this stupid, or is it just an out-of-touch, clueless, incompetent and corrupt Senator desperate for far-right votes?

I know this ain't housing bubble, but in a way it is. We're run by idiots. Idiots helped create the policies which created the housing bubble (no cap gains on home sales, interest rates too low, illegal immigration), and idiots will fiddle while America burns. How soon until we throw these bums out?

HOST: You talk about a lot of issues that affect people's lives. And yet you're going to bring two constitutional amendments to the Senate floor in the next few weeks, one to ban same-sex marriage, another to ban flag-burning, both reportedly in the papers to mobilize your conservative base. I have to tell you, I talked to a Republican senator this week who said he may vote for both of them but said they're both pandering. Are gay marriage and flag burning the most important issues the Senate can be addressing in June of 2006?

FRIST: Let me tell you what the agenda is real quick. Secure America's safety here at home. I mentioned supporting our troops overseas, making sure we pass that supplemental bill, making sure we tighten down our borders. securing America, a healthier America, so we'll lcontinuee to

HOST: All right. But ...

FRIST: Let me tell you, right now there's no prioritization there. Securing America's values. I hope tomorrow and today as people see that American flag, and I'm going to Arlington cemetery tomorrow and I'm going to see that flag waving on every grave over there. When you look at that flag and you tell me that right now people in this country are saying it's okay to desecrate that flag and to burn it and to not pay respect to it, is that important to our values as a people when we've got 130,000 people fighting for our freedom and liberty today? That is important. It may not be important here in Washington where people say, well, it's political posturing and all, but it's important to the heart and soul of the American people

Marriage, you asked about. Right now. Why marriage today? Marriage is for our society that union between a man and a woman, is the cornerstone of our society. It is under attack today. Right now there are 13 states who passed constitutional amendments in the last year and a half to protect marriage. Why? Because in nine states today, activist judges, unelected activist judges are tearing down state laws in nine states today. That's why I will take it to the floor of the Senate, simply define marriage as the union between a man and a woman.

I think this story, although not housing bubble related, is worth a spot on the front page here. The priorities of our elected officials are totally out of touch with thee majority of the American people. Of course there are people who would rather die than allowt wo men to marry, butthose are the people whose votes are the remaining 30% that approve of Bush. Bush/Frist/DeLay could murder a man in front of a Fox News camera and those 30% sould vote Republican--if they were smart (which they're obviously not, but neither are the Dems if they can't take advantage of this gross display of disconnect) they'd focus on getting back the moderate Repubs, which they're not by pandering to their fundamentalist base. The Dems can just exist and they'll win in Nov, if the Repubs keep on keepin' in, spewing the same policies of fear-mongering and hate while changing the people who tell us about them. Good strategy, really it is...

nobody should have any confidence in our incompetent and corrupt leaders to bail us out of the mess we're in. that's the main point

the other point is, what a doofus frist is. how does this guy keep his job?

They have used debt and our greed to enslave us. Now they appeal to our hatred to get re-elected.
I will get as close to the capitol steps as I can (you can't get very close anymore), and wipe my ass witha flag if they put that in the constitution.

No Senate Hearings on Housing Crash?

I guess those will be in two years after people have lost their money. . .then we will have "The Defense of Housing" act. As far as gay marriage is concerned. . .I'm against it too, and I am a gay man. I joined this team to cat around and be family free. . .what do I want with a bunch of rugrates and some clinging male lover??? If they want to get married - marry a lesbian!

If I can't desecrate the flag, would it be alright if I desecrated Bill Frist's head?

Anonymous said...

The funny part is that Frist actually believes he has a shot at the Presidential nomination. But then so did Trent Lott. Will somebody please sponsor a constitutional amendment that would prevent Senators from running for President?

gay marriage (against it), is a huge issue. If you let gays marry, what next? Can I marry my car, or my dog? Why cant I have 6 wives? How can you make an exception for just one group?

Those...are...not...people.

Why cant I have 6 wives?

Why stop at six?

two consenting adults, per this little thing called the constitution, are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, in addition to equal rights under the law. Whether you like it or not.

Same as a black man and a white woman, which in the 1940s would have seemed an abomination.

the problem is, as always, church and state. the state should not be in the religion (marriage) business. It should be in the legal civil union business, period. and that's the way this story will end, this decade or 100 years from now

"gay marriage (against it), is a huge issue. If you let gays marry, what next? Can I marry my car, or my dog? Why cant I have 6 wives? How can you make an exception for just one group?"

What crap. You've been listening to Bill O'Reiley, haven't you? This is his favorite (only) argument on the issue of gay marriage.

If two human adults are in love, unmarried, and want to get married, what business is it of yours? Notice I said humans and adults, because humans cannot enter into contractual partnerships with dogs or automobiles, and adults cannot enter into contracts with children. Multiple wives? It happens in Utah.

There will always be nut cases who test the boundaries of the law, and the courts will say no to the ones that are actually ridiculous. But, two men getting married? Two women? Who cares? Are you paying their bills, or responsible for their lives? Do you have the right to deny them happiness? Remember the line attributed to Jesus: "Before removing the splinter from your neighbor's eye, take the log out of your own."

You ask: "How can you make an exception for just one group?" Good question. How CAN you make an exception for just one group: HETEROSEXUALS?

Gay marriage is only a huge issue to gays who want to get married, and religious fanatics who think they're doing God's work by denying them the chance to do so. Guess what? You aren't God's little policeman, and most of the world's religious do not agree with you (you do, however, have fundamentalist Muslims and Orthodox Jews in your camp).

Bill Frist is a self-righteous hypocrite who votes FOR illegal immigrants and their American slave-drivers, but AGAINST gays who want to marry. Is something askew here? I think humans who deliberately exploit the poor are inherently disgusting, but one cannot say this of gays.

The ONLY arguments against gays and gay marriage offered in this country are RELIGIOUS, and therefore have no relevance in legal discourse. If you think it's a sin to kiss a man or woman, don't kiss one, if you can control yourself, but don't compare homosexuality to bestiality, polygamy, pedophilia, or anything else.

If you can prove heterosexuals are intrinsically more moral than homosexuals, please do. Otherwise, take your bible and sanctimoniously shove it up Bill Frist's chapel.

The top priority of the GOP right now is to *misdirect* attention from their failures. The budget, Katrina, capturing Bin Laden, the mess in Iraq, corruption, and hideous poll numbers.

How to go about diverting the nation's attention? Let's talk about illegals instead. Even Keith at HP will be distracted by that one!

Yeah... Illegals! The GOP didn't cause it - so we can blame Clinton or Gore (and maybe do some collateral damage to Hillary!).

Not working? Let's get the core of the party whipped up with talk about gay marriage and flag burning! Toby Keith will shill for us!

If allowing gay marriage is OK, next will be pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality and only God knows what else.

The fact that so many accept this is a clear sign of how screwed up mankind has become.

It has nothing to do with having an open mind. When you walk around with an open mind, you risk having your brain fall out. Having an open mind is for people too lazy to exercise any judgement or with too little discipline to have any principles, unless of course they are principles of immorality.

This is just the new religion of moral relativism. See Coulter's new book being released on 6-6-06 and read the Marketing of Evil, both mentioned at WND.com

"This is just the new religion of moral relativism. See Coulter's new book being released on 6-6-06 and read the Marketing of Evil, both mentioned at WND.com"

Given the fact that Ann Coulter boasts about having extramarital sex, and has done for years, this is a very strange statement.

If you want evil, just go to anncoulter.com (you'll have to sign up to read the posts) and see what her sycophants believe. Among other things, her blog monitors disapprove of the word "slavery" to describe the exploitation of illegal immigrants for profit, and support cruelty to animals as practiced by Dick Cheney and George Bush:

http://tinyurl.com/648ee

Her blog censors anyone who doesn't conform. Her monitors call the exploited children of illegal immigrants working in American migrant camps law-breakers, and dismiss their abuse as unimportant.

Her followers make fun of people who oppose hunting, and are fanatically defensive of fundamentalist Christianity. They hang on her every word, but don't bother to check her "facts." Neither, apparently, does she.

http://tinyurl.com/r26tm

http://tinyurl.com/mc6jr

Her monitors are also involved directly or indirectly in other supposedly conservative blogs, and there, too, practice censorship, deleting letters and comments critical of their goddess.

I think it's amazing that a woman of such character and a complete absense of compassion has the nerve to write about the moral relativism of others. Does the fact that she likes having extramarital sex with men instead of women make her a paragon of Christian virtue?

If you think evoking (I use this word deliberately) her and her pseudo-Christianity gives credence to your position, you are sorely mistaken. Almost every wrongdoing she projects on others, she demostrates in her own life. True, she's witty as hell (so are most drag queens), but wit and wisdom are not synonymous, and cruel humor is a favorite of sadists.

Incidentally, she claims to have gay friends and to hang around gay people, though she uses homosexual slurs, and not benignly.

Releasing her book on 6-6-6 is supposed to be a clever play-up on the the evil of her opponents, but it very well be indicative of her own character. It definitely reflects the nastiness of her bloggers.

I am cool with allowing gays to marry...ONLY if every other "alternative lifestyle" group is given the same right. So, to be consisten, we must allow 34 year old men to marry 8 year old boys right? People should be allowed to have 6 wives, or 3 wives and 3 husbands. What if a guy wants to marry his car, shouldn't he have the right as well since we made the exception for gays? There are many other alternative lifestyle groups that you "cool, hip, liberals" are forgettting here. Gays have their rights, civil unions. Marriage is, and will always be between one man and one woman.

You obviously didn't read all the letters above, some which address your idiotic points in detail.

Homosexuality is not an alternative lifestyle: it's a sexual orientation determined by biology. Bible-thumping and gay-bashing ARE alternative lifestyles, since only a fraction of the public engages in them. So if the majority rules, I (the majority) have decided you definitely should not be allowed to breed.

Any skeletons in your closet, or are you GENUINELY holier-than-thou?
Unless you can demostrate YOUR moral superiority, you might want to be careful throwing stones. Again, those who scream the loudest about sexual morality are almost always the guiltiest. "It takes one to know one" is the best-known adage for this phenomenon.

Eight-year-olds and cars cannot enter into contracts.

As for polygamy, that's a matter for the legislature. There's certainly no constitutional argument against it.

If this is the strongest argument you can come up with, then you need to just give it up and let the grownups talk.

"Why is this blog so liberal and left? Isn't this a housing bubble blog?"

What's liberal about not carring about gay marriage? The question posed by this tread is why are politicians wasting time on nonsense when there is a real estate disater looming on the horizon. Why is it that instead of addressing serious problems that affect everyone, they focus on molehills affecting very, very few? I think I already know. When Bush's popular rating dropped into hell, the ever-evil Carl Rove suddenly announced he was resurrecting the anti-gay marriage amendment. It's called pandering to the stupidest people in the crowd in order to get them back on ones side. The fact that it hurts innocents--in this case gays--is irrelevant, as long as Bush's poll numbers climb. So far, they'll still headed south, so most Americans seem to figured out the trick. After all, who is Carl Rove to be preaching Christian values?

As for the other writer, what's wrong with saving owls and seals? They're a lot cuter than the aptly-named DICK Chaney who has doctors on hand 24/7 to save his sorry, animal-killing ass should his non-existent heart stop pumping.

I am SO sick of the endless arguing about homosexuality.

Can't we just admit to a few facts?

1.)For some reason, we aren't yet sure exactly why, a small percentage of people have same sex orientation.

2.)This has been the case for thousands of years.

3.)Despite attempts to suppress this, including death (see present day Iran) homosexuality is still with us.

4.)Some cultures (some American Indian tribes for example) have just integrated homosexuality into the culture.

Homosexuals are not going away. In America they are tax paying citizens just like everyone else. Therefore to deny them equal rights is ridiculous. If you don't want them to have equal rights I'd recommend you start giving them a discount on their tax bill, since they are helping pay for your children's public education even though they aren't adding to the load.

There are so many other more pressing problems than who a person loves. It's time for humans to grow up and move on.

Last time I checked, a marriage license was a "civil" license obtained from the nearest courthouse. Seeing as we have separation of church and state in this country, I see no reason why two rational, willing, same sex individuals shouldn't be allowed to get married. No one gets hurt -- except the religious funadamentalists who are trying to "project" their religious views on the "civil" institution of marriage.

The bigger mystery is why gays want to "opt in" to a system (marriage) with a 50% failure rate.

OK if marriage is so wonderful and should be between a man and a woman only then why are divorce rates are higher in red states?

Marriage is NOT about having kids! My DH and I have known each other since 5th grade, we married after college and he has had a vasectomy. We do not plan on having any kids. So we shouldn't be married?

What you're saying foobeca is only hederosexual couples who have kids should marry? Isn't that limiting yourself to just one group? One VERY NARROW group.

As others have said every consenting adult has the right to marry whomever they want, as long as it's another consenting adult.

Why is it you have to be 18 to marry, but in the south you can be 15? how is that better then gays marrying? Only in the south is statutory rape a good thing and celebrated by marriage.

As to the flag buring, what better way to get your point across? Stating that your fight against the government involves your freedom of speech. This country is based on being able to state how you feel, this includes how you feel about the government.

"What the issue really comes down to is that gays want their relationships to be sanctioned/accepted by society and they think gay marriage would give them that."

That is part of it, but the bigger issue has more to do with hate than anything else. The in your face gay rights folks are demanding the word marriage when a lot of gay people I talked to would be happy with just a civil union. Why? Because the word marriage has more to do with God than with the state and your rights. They are demanding this wording to piss off the religious right...that is the ONLY reason to demand a 'marriage' over a 'civil union.' A lot of straight people are getting more and more pissed off over this. If liberal Oregon can't pass gay marriage, only civil unions...gays need to take back their self identities and stop letting their big mouth leaders demand a certain word just to get back at those they hate (who in turn hate them).

I personally think the state should get totally out of the marriage deal. Leave a 'marriage' certificate up to the church. Have a civil union certificate for all. That being said, it's bs that gays may get this right but folks who wanted more than one spouse have been jailed over this. If a man can now marry another man, why can't one man marry 2,3,4 or whatever # of women as long as they are all 18 years of age or older? Seriously, if I were a mormon or muslim in America, I would be pissed of as well.

These are the reasons I would vote _for_ such an amendment, because for the gays it quit becoming about rights and more about thumbing their nose at the religious right. You get what you can take. Just demand civil union laws read the same as marriage laws and get civil unions. Allow your Unitarian church to issue you a Certificate of "Marriage" and be happy. As least your not going to go to jail like those who engage in plural marriage.

I think the fact that many of you see these issues as small is the reason why the Dems still got beat in 2004. The repub's were not that popular that year and they still won by a significant majority. The problem is the left and dem's representing the left refuse to see moral issues as significant issues and that government should stay out of them. Government does not exist for the purpose of making you or I rich, in fact the existence of government does the exact opposite. I would rather be living the standards of a third world country then be wealthy living in a corrupt and immoral society.

So the Republicans are moral? What about Carl Rove, Bush's henchman who has devoted his life to destroying the reputations of others? What about Dick Cheney killing HUNDREDS of TAME animals on canned "hunts?"

http://tinyurl.com/648ee

This is morality?

People who make a big deal out of their own morality usually don't have any. The Republican-controlled Senate just sold out to Mexico and illegal immigrants in return for the Hispanic vote and slave labor.

http://tinyurl.com/rj2sa

Is opening up mining for gold in pristine Eskimo country (who needs more gold?), poisoning the water with cyanide (used in its extraction) a form of morality? The natives are horrified, but our government and gold investors think it's wonderful!!!

Is giving billions of dollars in subsidies to major corporations, including airlines, without taxpayer permission a form of morality?

Yes, our society is wealthy and corrupt, but both parties are equally revolting.

Who are you to say that homosexuals are corrupt and immoral? Can you say this without looking in the bible for support? Our government cannot operate according to the dictates of the bible or the koran; it has to function for everyone, not just the followers of a specific religion.
