HPers - read any good books lately? Make your recommendations here

I'd start with the one shown here - Life 2.0. I think the bubble burst will cause many folks to rethink their position in the rat race. And get out. Life's too short to spend it sitting in traffic in New Jersey on the way home to your $800,000 two-bedroom condo.

My other favorite reads are to the right from amazon.com

I also just finished for fun the Christ Clone Trilogy series by Beauseigneur.

Misquoting Jesus, all about the sources and many misconceptions about the Bible. Fascinating read.

Hmmm...don't know about the thesis here. I know a lot of people that just don't want to make major changes like that so I'm skeptical. Folks who have spent all their life in a major urban area don't adjust well to country living and vice versa.

I bought Life 2.0 via your link a couple of weeks ago. It affirms what I decided some time ago and is a great option for many who are cashing out: most of the day-to-day struggle is necessary to make the damn mortgage, keep those nice cars shiny, and so on. If you have an opportunity to start fresh in a small town, a lot of life's BS goes away.

The other great point he makes is that being in a small town ain't as isolating as it used to be. DSL / cable / satellite internet, Fed Ex, and satellite TV makes it possible to get info, entertainment, and products as easy as it is in the big city.

If you don't need face to face contact in your business, it's a much more viable option than it was even five or six years ago.

Before you move to Mayberry be sure to come to terms with the small town politics...Everybody is up in each other's business and if you are in anyway different (race, nationality, political affiliation, sexual orientation, etc.) it'll be hard getting along with the natives...

Them folks raised and stuck in them small towns are lookin for an easy buck too. don't cross em or you'll find yerself in court with a big lawsuit or every government agency called on you for complaints. them folks have all the time in the world to f@ck with you. I lost my @ss twice in Mayberry now.

Who wants to go to a small town far from hospitals and culture with $3.00+++ GAS?

Small towns have cheap real estate and attract drug users, people hiding from society, and registered sex offenders.

With realtors having to compete for sales with cheaper internet sites I think we will have alot less "fluff" in the market.

Phew, thank God for that warning. I'll stay in San Jose where we don't have any of those kind of people.

You cant get away with making Methamphetamine in San Jose. You have to go to Mayberry.

Trust me, you have a better class of scum bag because of your high real estate.

I liked Sean Hannity's book alot. Steve Forbes flat tax book was solid too.

Extraordinarily unfortunate example old sport. They busted a meth lab literally two miles from my house as I was preparing to put it on the market. Houses on his street were comping in the $700K range. Well, before that happened I mean. Man I got drunk every night for a week, and I wasn't celebrating.

Oh, and we don't have any gang problems or drive-by shootings in San Jose either, like they do in Mayberry all the time.

As the Black Knight says in The Meaning Of Life, let's call it a draw.

It just proves my point that you can't get away with making meth in San Jose.

Having lived in both small towns and major metropolitan areas I don't feel there is a large difference in safety between the two. I've spent many a night terrified at my grandparents house where drunks and meth makers would drive by real slow all night knowing good and well the neighbors were over 2/3 of a mile away (could barely see the mercury light on their barn) and the cops are a good 1/2 drive away.

Safety is really a function of the area in which you are located. I've walked the streets of downtown Tampa alone at night without a care in the world and I've been nervous in small town Midwest walking my dog in the summer evenings.

Also have to deal with complete low lifes in the country, people who have no vision of international and think going to the WalMart supercenter is diversity and a treat. At least where I live most of the people are educated and professionals instead of my parents' country neighbors who drive 18-wheelers, chip golf balls at my parents house, and have four trucks and two license plates which they switch to whichever truck they are driving.

Yeah out in the country we've got wide open spaces, go on driving your freeways wasting your time backed up in a traffic jam. Everybody should move out to the country. then the country wouldn't be country anymore. Hold on a second...
Of course in the city you have your parks where you don't have to worry about rattlesnakes or an abominable snow man comming along and tearing your head off neither.
Just LeDoux it.

Yeah, despite all naysayers trying to turn people away with exagerations. Seattle has a whole sub culture based on this directed at Californians.
It's not the small town it's the space. Don't worry about criminals drivng by real slow looking for toruble. Just put up signs that say "R&R Gun Club". Really, the good life is having some land to call home.

Why do I not feel sorry for these morons? Just making the rich man richer.

nothing wrong with getting rich is there?

That's why nothing beats the surburbs. You don't have as much crime as the cities, but you're not in the middle of nowhere. I can get to the museum, orchestra or fine dining in 20-30 minutes. I don't have to deal with crime or gang problems.

Talking abou tracism in the country, why don't some of you take your lily whites arses into the inner city and see what happens. They'll be scraping your carcass off the road ala Reginald Denny
